Compare and Order IntegersCompare and Order IntegersObjective: To understand how to compare and order integers.

Compare and Order IntegersAt the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following question.

How can symbols and absolute value help you order sets of integers?

IntegersThe number line can be used to compare and order integers. On a number line, the number to the left is always less than the number to the right.

IntegersAn inequality is when two values are not equal.

e.g. 6 > 3

IntegersWrite -9 and -4 as an inequality.

IntegersWrite -9 and -4 as an inequality.

-9 -4

-9 < -4Generally you want to keep the integers in the same order as in the question.

IntegersWrite -5 and 0 as an inequality.

IntegersWrite -5 and 0 as an inequality.

-5 0

-5 < 0

IntegersReplace with < or > to make the statement true. -6 5

-5 0

IntegersReplace with < or > to make the statement true. -6 5

-5 0

Since -6 is to the left of 5 it is less than 5. -6 < 5

IntegersReplace with < or > to make the statement true. -1 0

-5 0

IntegersReplace with < or > to make the statement true. -1 0

-5 0

Since -1 is to the left of 0 it is less than 0. -1 < 0

IntegersJustin has a score of -4 on the Trueville Trivia game. Desirees score is -5. Write an inequality to compare the scores. Who has the higher score?

-4 > -5

IntegersJustin has a score of -4 on the Trueville Trivia game. Desirees score is -5. Write an inequality to compare the scores. Who has the higher score?

-4 > -5-4 is further to the right than -5, so Justin has the higher score.

IntegersThe temperature on Tuesday was 2F. The temperature on Wednesday was -2F. Write and inequality to compare the temperatures. Explain the meaning of the inequality.

2 > -2

IntegersThe temperature on Tuesday was 2F. The temperature on Wednesday was -2F. Write and inequality to compare the temperatures. Explain the meaning of the inequality.

2 > -22 is further to the right than -2, so Tuesdays temperature was higher.

Is least to greatest right to left or left to right?

IntegersOrder 4, 8, 0, -5 from least to greatest

-5 0 4 8

Compare and Order IntegersMarissa and her family are on a ski trip at Mt. Washington. They return from the slopes at 6PM. By 9PM the temperature had fallen 18 to the days low temperature of -8F. What was the temperature at 6PM?

What are the facts?

Or you could have added the times in the table, 15 + 35 + 10 + 20 = 80 minutesThen figure out what time is 80 minutes before 8:15.80 minutes is 1 hour and 2o minutes. An hour before 8:15AM is 7:15. 20 minutes before that is 6:55AM
