HoloLensWhat is it?An augmented reality headset being developed by Microsoft. The HoloLens tricks the brain into believing that the images produced by the device exist in the physical world.

Why is it important?The HoloLens has the potential to reinvent how people interact with computers, with almost limitless possibilities. Imagine playing a game with the 3D world projected into the room, or online shopping with the ability to actually see the objects in front of you.

The developer version of the HoloLens will ship during Q1 2016.

Windows 10 Universal AppsWhat is it?A feature that allows developers to create an application that can run on any Windows 10 device, including smartphones, PCs, HoloLens, and Xbox.

Why is it important?The PC is no longer the center of the computing universe, and while Windows has the advantage of a vast catalog of legacy applications, this does Microsoft no good when it comes to mobile. Windows 10 is the only OS capable of running on such a wide variety of devices, and universal apps are the glue that holds the ecosystem together.

Surface HubWhat is it?A multi-touch multi-user screen designed for collaboration. Enables interactive meetings and conference calls, with deep integration with Microsoft software like Skype and OneNote. Powered by Windows 10, with either a 55” HD or 84” 4K display.

Why is it important?Microsoft is an enterprise company, and its mission is to reinvent productivity. The Surface Hub has the potential to replace clunky conference room equipment, allowing for frictionless meetings, presentations, and collaboration.

The Surface Hub is expected to ship in January of 2016

Surface BookWhat is it?Microsoft’s first laptop. The 13.5-inch screen detaches from the keyboard, allowing it to be used as a tablet. The higher-end configurations include a powerful discrete graphics chip, housed inside the keyboard.

Why is it important?2-in-1 Windows laptops are nothing new, but Microsoft has created something special. Continuum for Windows PhonesWhat is it?A feature of Windows 10 Mobile that allows a Windows Phone to power a PC-like interface, requiring a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and display dock. The phone and “PC” can then be used independently.

Why is it important?While Continuum may seem gimmicky, the feature could be a big hit in emerging markets, where smart phones are the first and only computing device for many people. Continuum may also make sense for those with light computing tasks, where an inexpensive PC would otherwise be required. The feature has the potential to strengthen the Windows 10 ecosystem and boost Windows as a mobile platform.
