The barriers to employment experienced by youth are significant and real, despite access to education growing dramatically.

The barriers to employment experienced by youth are significant and real, despite access to education growing dramatically.

Post school opportunities for youth are impacted by three major factors: a quality matric pass, access to funding for further studies, and knowledge regarding the labour market and how to access it.

Recent studies show that many rural youth have become outsiders in the labour market as

information on, and access to, work opportunities are less available to people in rural communities. In addition, many South African school leavers have limited knowledge of the realities of life post school as well as the world of work.

KHULA Education is therefore working with local youth as well as various training partners, employers and educational institutions in the region to deliver interventions that can more effectively transition rural youth into jobs.

Over 200 youth, graduates from KHULA linked schools in Insandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, were exposed to a one day learnership information workshop and provided with opportunities to apply

for learnerships through Elandsheim Retreat.

Over 5,5 million young South Africans are unemployed

Youth Employment rate (18 - 28 yrs): 52,5%

KHULA Education is exploring opportunities to engage young people in conversations, workshops and other training initiatives to prepare them better for life after school, whether this be further study or the ability to access employment.

We are currently collaborating with Elandsheim Retreat to extend Learnership placement opportunities to more youth in deep rural areas such as Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana.

KHULA Education is also raising funds to implement a series of workshops for Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 learners at KHULA linked schools, targeting a variety of subject choice, career choice, CV preparation and interview skills techniques.

Subject Choice &Job Readiness Workshops

KHULA Education provides an opportunity for learners in Grades 9 to 12, from rural schools in the Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana areas, to attend life skills camps during the Summer holidays.

The camps, now in their 8th year, are a proven opportunity for self-development, developing confidence in public speaking, self-assurance and advice on how to approach different life challenges.

The camps encourage the development of essential life and business skills, equipping local youth to more successfully navigate and bridge the rural/urban and school/work divide.

Life Skills Summer Camps

“I ensure that our learners have a good appreciation of English language that in turn helps them to penetrate the work and tertiary education environment. Many high school learners show a deep need and eagerness to learn. With that seed in them, it gives us something to work with and their results speak for themselves. Learners are improving in their performance and that brightens the future that they have.”Denver Ndlovu, KHULA English Specialist
