In 1902 removed to Dur- ban, where he set up permanent residence. Is a staunch supporter of the teaching of the ver- nacular languages, and directed efforts especially for the furtherance of the Tamil language. To further this cause, purchased a piece of land for £200, and handed it over to the Hindu Tamil Institute in 1907 ; for many years the president of this body. In 1908, repstd. South African Indians at the conference of the Indian National Congress held in Madras. At this conference, he explained the conditions of the Indian emigrants to South Africa, and the untold hardships of their lot. He strongly advocated the total removal of the pernicious system of indentured labour. He was, for many years, a v.-presclt. of the Natal Indian Congress. From 1916 to 1922 was chairman of Stree Vaithianathar Easparar Temple, resigned office because of his .departure to India a t the time. In 1917 performed opening of Sentan~il School. In 1920, he was one of the members of the Deputation which interviewed the Education Depart- ment for the establisl~ment of schools for Indian girls, and for raising of salaries for Indian teachers. In 1920 was chairman of the Special Committee appointed to alleviate distress, owing to high price of rice, among poor Indians.
