Many people will be able to tellyou’re a tourist and some maytake advantage of the fact that
you are out of your depths.
Here are a few key travel safetytips that you’ll want to keep in
mind on your next vacation:
1. Leave an itineraryand emergencycontact with a
friend
It can be refreshing to unplugfrom your life, but it’s importantthat you’re somewhat connected
so that you can ensure your safety.Make sure you leave an itinerary
with a trusted friend or familymember back home.
The itinerary doesn’t have to bedetailed; it could just include
which city you’ll be visiting andwhen you’ll be coming back. Try
to check in with this friend orfamily member every day.
This way, they can alert theauthorities on your behalf ifsomething happens. This is
especially important if you’retraveling solo.
2. Scan a copy ofyour passport
We all know that travellinginternationally requires a
passport, but once you get to yourdestination, you should lock your
passport safely in your hotel sothat it doesn’t get stolen.
Before you leave the country, scana copy of your passport so you canuse the copy while you’re out and
about instead of using thepassport itself.
In addition to decreasing thechances of your passport gettingstolen, this makes replacing your
passport easier in the event that itdoes get stolen.
3. Research andkeep emergency
numbers
Remember that emergencynumbers are different
everywhere. In each destination,you should find out the local
emergency hotlines. Save thesenumbers to your phone,
preferably on speed dial, in case ofemergency.
You should also research theconsulates or embassies of yourhome country that are closest towhere you’re staying. Save thosephone numbers and addresses in
your phone as well.
4. Know yourescape route
Take note of specific buildings andlandmarks when you’re walkingaround in unfamiliar areas. It’s
always good to know of a“friendly” place nearby, such as a
bar, shop, cafe or gas station, sothat you can go there if you ever
feel threatened.
Once you duck into this place, youcan either call for help or wait forthe threat to pass. You should also
review the escape route in yourhotel. Once you check into your
hotel, take a look at theemergency escape routes.
5. Guard your cashand valuables
When you leave the house, takesome spending money with youand leave the rest hidden. You
won’t want to show off a big wadof cash each time you pay.
You may also be tempted to haveyour smartphone out so that you
can take photos or look updirections, but be aware of yoursurroundings. It is common for
thieves to grab cell phones frompeople who are using them and
then run off the train at the nextstop.

on vacation, it can be easy toforget about your personal safety
But when you’re traveling to aforeign country, this is a the time
to be especially mindful to yoursurroundings so that you don’t get
robbed or put in any kind ofdanger.
