Welcome to your 5 Day Juice Cleanse!

Juice feasting/fasting is a practice that has gained some real popularity in the last few years. What was once a ‘fringe’ alternative health practice is now becoming mainstream, thanks to the work of those at places like The Hippocrates Institute and movies like ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.’

Essentially, the idea behind juice feasting is to consume nothing but water and fresh pressed juices in order to give the body a complete break from digestion to facilitate deep detoxification and healing. In this cleanse there is a little more variety of beverages, as our goal is to keep you feeling energized and on track!

Our number one recommendation for you if you are going to do a juice feast would be to drink enough. Below you will find a 5 Day Juice Cleanse Meal Plan, but if you feel you need more than that, please add in an extra juice or two! Also note that if 5 days feels too much for you, cut it back to 3 days.

It is also highly recommended that you drink at least 3-1 litres of fresh water when on a juice feast. This will help flush your body of toxins.

Resting is also very important. A juice feast is no time to start a marathon training program, or to continue on with a very intense physical routine. Rest, sleep, take baths and generally take it easy in order to facilitate healing and avoid doing damage to your body. It is very important to listen to your body when juicing as somedays you may feel energized and eager and the next you may need to rest and be pampered. Follow the queues of your body.

Please keep in mind that juice feasting in and of itself is not a good weight loss tool. You will most likely release weight when on a juice feast, especially during a longer feast. But if you do not have a very healthy, balanced eating and lifestyle routine to return to a er your feast, you will put all the weight you lost back on, and likely even more. Be sure to really take care to build a great lifestyle that is sustainable for a er your juice feast before you take on a juice feast in the first place.

Difference between Juices and Smoothies

One of the most common questions we get is “what's the difference between juices and smoothies?” This is a totally understandable question, and one that we will be shedding light on for your right now. First, lets take a quick look at the clear definition of juices vs. smoothies:

What is a Juice?

A juice is a liquid extraction of a plant. Simply put a juice is all of the liquid a plant contains with none of the fibre. Juice is made by shredding or pressing the produce and then physically separating the pulp from the liquid contained within the cell walls of the plant. The pulp is then discarded and only the liquid is consumed.

What is a Smoothie?

A smoothie is an emulsification of ingredients where no part of the plant is removed, but rather they are simply broken down. Smoothies can be thought of as predigested foods because some of the mechanical digestion that would usually have been done by chewing has been done for you by your blender. In a nutshell smoothies are blended whole foods.

So, as you can see, the main difference between a juice and a smoothie is that a smoothie still contains all the fibre of the plants you blend, where as a juice is an extraction, where the fibres and liquid of the plants are separated, and only the liquid is consumed.

Why Juice?Juicing has started to gain some serious popularity in the last few years. Juice and smoothie bars are popping up all over the place, more and more restaurants have juice on their menus, and people are starting to get into it enough that they are doing it for themselves at home! This is super exciting for us, because we know how transformative the simple practice of juicing daily can be. This list of health benefits is by no means exhaustive, but it shouldgive you an idea of what juicing can do for you.

1. Super hydration: Juice is one of the best ways to hydrate your body. While we do not recommend that you drink juice in place of water, it is something that you can add to your fluid intake to make sure you are fully hydrated. Remember that optimal health is not possible when you are dehydrated. Your bodies performance requires that you are properly hydrated. Your digestion, respiration, enzyme function, brain function, proper nerve transmission and more all depend upon water to happen. The water in fruits and veggies is actually filtered by the the plant, meaning that the hydration it provides your body is clean and extremely bioavailable for your cells.

2. Vitamin and mineral infusion: Fresh pressed fruit and vegetable juices are basically the most efficient vitamin and mineral infusion that you can ingest. Plant foods are fibrous foods. These plant fibres are actually structural components for the plant. You can think of plant fibres like the walls of a room. Each cell has fibrous ’walls’ that must be broken down in order for your body to access the nutrition stored inside the cell. When you are eating plant based foods your body has to work pretty hard to break down those fibres because they are very tough. In fact, there are some plant fibres such as many of those found in leafy greens, that we as humans do not have the digestive enzymes to break down. So sometimes when you are eating your big leafy salad you are not getting 100% of the nutrients within those greens because your body simply does not have the tools to break open the cells. This is where juicing comes in. When you drink fresh pressed juice, the juicer has actually done all the work of breaking open the cell walls of the plants, and has extracted the nutrition held within. This means you have increased access to nutrients! These vitamins and minerals can then be directly absorbed into your bloodstream, and ushered to your cells where they can be put to use!

3. No digestive effort: The act of digestion is very energetically expensive for your body. This is what is known as the Thermic Effect Of Food, and it accounts for about 10-15% of the calories you burn on an average day. Also know that more often than not your body will prioritize

digestion and allocate energy towards digestion over other processes in the body, such as healing and detoxification. When you drink fresh pressed juices, your body is able to directly absorb the nutrition they contain, without doing any digestive work. For this reason juices made in a centrifugal juicer need to be consumed within about 15 minutes, or you will be losing nutrients. If you do have to make juice ahead of time in a centrifugal juicer, it is best to freeze your juice and drink it as it defrosts.

Breaking your fastCare needs to be taken when breaking a fast so as not to overburden your digestive system. The best benefit of fasting is realized when a fast is broken properly. Taking it slow and easy is not only kind to your body, but allows YOU the opportunity to integrate your new-found clarity on your relationship to food. The protective mucus lining of the stomach may be temporarily diminished as well, making the stomach walls more vulnerable to irritation until it also returns to normal. Gentle reintroduction of foods, beginning with the simplest and easiest-to-digest foods, supports this process. Substances known to be irritating to the system, such as coffee and spicy foods, must be avoided during the breaking process.

The reintroduction period necessary is based on the length of the fast.

3 day fast = 1 day reintroduction of food5 day fast = 2 day reintroduction of food 7 day fast = 2-3 day reintroduction of food10 day fast = 4-5 day reintroduction of food

Foods to use for breaking a fast:

It is important to not over stress your digestive system when reintroducing foods. Start with the most nutritious and easy-to-digest foods first then gradually add more diversity and complexity over time. To help you determine what order to introduce certain foods, use the following list.

It begins with those that are easiest on the system and can be introduced early on, and progresses to those that should be added later. Please note that it should take you 2 days to break a 5 day juice cleanse. It is crucial you do not jump past #7 of the list within the first two days. Any of the first three items on the list are good for that initial "breaking" of a fast, raw fruit being the easiest and most popular. Soaked prunes are also a commonly used when breaking a fast. Please note you DO NOT have to reintroduce all of these food groups back into your diet. Some people only eat the first 6 while others prefer to include all of them.

More pointers for breaking a fast:

• Pay close attention to your body's reactions to these "new" foods. Watch for any adverse reactions, perhaps signalling a mild allergy/intolerance or that you have gone too far, too quickly. Feel for the sensation of fullness and stop eating at that point. Begin to train yourself to watch for that signal, so you'll always know when your body is fully nourished.

• Chew foods well. This will help immensely with proper digestion and is a good habit to foster.

FAQDo I need a juicer for this cleanse?

It is recommended you have a juicer for this cleanse so you can get the most nutrition out of your juices. If you cannot afford a juicer at this time, maybe ask around to see if you can borrow one from a friend or neighbour. We do not recommend using a blender as a juicer for cleanses like this.

What if I can’t find/don’t like an item on the ingredient lists?

No problem! Most items can be substituted. Keep in mind that you can train your palate to enjoy new foods, so we do encourage you to try items that you may think you do not like. If you do have to make a substitution, here is a quick cheat sheet:

Celery - You can use cucumber, zucchini or lettuce in place of celery.

Cucumber - You can use celery, zucchini or lettuce in place of cucumber.

Citrus - You can swap any type of citrus in any recipe.

Herbs - All herbs are interchangeable. Use what you like and can find.

Cabbage - Fennel, cucumber and celery can be used in place of cabbage.

Fennel - Celery, cucumber or cabbage can be use in place of fennel.

Green apples - Use any variety of apple you can find.

Beets/carrots - Beets and carrots can be substituted for one another.

Watermelon - Any melon can be used in it’s place.

Nuts - Other nuts or seeds can be used in their place.

Will I be hungry during this cleanse?

If this is your first cleanse you will most likely feel hungry for the first few days as your body will be adjusting to not having the physical aspect of food going through your digestive system. It also takes a few days to mentally adjust. Be patient with yourself.

What if I cheat and eat something?

If you end up eating food, do not beat yourself up. Just move onto the next juice recipe and keep going. Really do your best to not eat food as it fires up your digestive system and you will not benefit as much as you would from only juicing. It is also recommended not to chew gum, candies or mints when juice fasting. It is best to be prepared when juice cleansing. If you know you will be out of the house, bring juice and tea with you. If you still have to make food for your family, always have juice around to sip incase you get the munchies.
