Department of Education Newsletter Edition 12 Date 5 August 2010 From the Principal ………………….. Dear Parents, REPORTS Our mid year student reports were issued yesterday with parent-teacher discussions scheduled for next week. I hope that this major report achieves our aim of providing detailed information about student learning in all areas and suggested areas for improvement in the second half of the year. Please take the opportunity to meet with teachers to learn more about your child’s progress, to see some work samples and to discuss how we can support each other to enhance student learning. All bookings for meetings are made through the school office. I would also appreciate any feedback on the structure of our reports and the assessment regime. With the introduction of the National Curriculum over the next few years, it is likely that new assessment and reporting processes will be introduced. Your views on this would be appreciated so that we can represent these in future discussions. Please feel free to see me personally about this, phone, send a note or pass comments on to teachers at discussions next week. FAREWELL MRS COOK We farewelled Mrs Cook (Bullman) last week as she embarked on a two year journey to Hong Kong, where she and her husband will be teaching in an International School. We will miss Tracee’s contribution to the PE/Health program and Active After Schools. We look forward to her return in 2012. We are fortunate to have Miss Scattergood as her replacement, along with her knowledge of the students and programs from previous assignments in the school. MALCOLM MOORE PRINCIPAL

Try-a-Trade On Thursday 22nd July, fourteen grade 9 students attended the Try-a-Trade Day held at the Burnie Civic Centre. The students were given the opportunity to taste three different trades over the course of the day. Although the sessions were short in time, the learning and experiences gained for our students were valuable. Below are some comments from the students in response to questions posed regarding the day. What did you enjoy most about the day?

Kyle Horton: I enjoyed the Defence Forces most.

Corey Jasper: The electro-technology was very good and I learned a lot.

Brendan Tuck: I enjoyed the plumbing the most.

Brodie Martin: I enjoyed the joinery activity.

Dean Hibble: I enjoyed the bricklaying; it was good to learn a new skill.

Tayah Scott: Meeting new people who have a lot of experience in the areas I’m interested in.

Tayla Smith: Meeting new people and learning heaps of new trades.

What did you discover today?

Brendan Tuck: How to lay bricks.

Kerrin Lawson: How to make a good coffee.

Kody Steers: How to pull apart a four-stroke motor, use a GPS and wiring bolts together.

Damien Sturmey: I learned that an air horn is pretty loud when you’re standing near it!

Tayah Scott: That I have interests in areas that I didn’t know existed!

Tayla Smith: I learned how interesting most trades are and how much they have to offer.

What career are you interested in?

Brodie Martin: Joinery

LOVE IS A BOLLYWOOD UPDATE Sheffield’s 2010 Production This year’s school production is really beginning to take shape. It’s been very hectic with several different things happening simultaneously. Our extremely talented cast are in the early stages of mastering their amazing Indian accents. While Mrs Bentley is undertaking numerous amazing costumes. Mrs Maddick’s Community Design Class have begun work on the backdrop. Some of the students in the cast have been treated to an amazing Jazz workshop and are looking forward to an evening of Indian Cuisine and Bollywood film next week. Reminder: All students involved in the production need to bring their $5 for the Indian dinner next week. Rehearsals will finish at 7:30 on Tuesday 10th August. JAZZ WORKSHOP Last week 30 of Sheffield’s talented students were invited to an amazing Jazz workshop. Miss Brooks organised for two amazing international Jazz singers and a professional pianist to grace our

related arts building for an hour and a half dynamic workshop. Myself, Miss Brooks, Mrs Bentley and even Mr Moore were in attendance along with our outstanding students. Ellie Maddick prepares her inner voice!         Mr Moore         prepares his         inner          voice!

MANA PERFORMANCE Our Grade 7 – 10 students attended an amazing performance by Bernard from Mana Spirit. Bernard not only amazed us with his American Indian Hoop Dance but he also took us on his journey of family and ancestors. With ancestors from all over the world the students were taken on a journey from the Americas to Polynesia. Students were invited up to perform some of the traditional dances from Polynesia and even got to do the Humpty Dumpty Hakka. We’d like to thank Mrs Haberle for organising an absolutely fantastic performance.

GRADE 9 BEYOND BLUE WORKSHOPS The Grade 9’s participated in a five week Beyond Blue Workshop. Students were provided with a booklet to keep all of their thoughts and notes in and provided with some excellent hypothetical scenarios and situations to work through. It was fantastic to see the students working together in teams to brainstorm and come up with solutions to some of the everyday problems that face teenagers. Students learnt skills in how to be resilient and how to talk about their problems with those they trust. The facilitator John had a wonderfully relaxed approach towards the students which allowed them to feel comfortable within some awkward situations. The students were

supported over the weeks by, Mrs Von Schill, Mr Hayes, Mr McGill, Pam, Karen, Mrs Haberle, Mr Moore and Ms Schroeter. All adults involved were very proud of the grade nine’s participation and team work skills. Thanks again to Mrs Haberle for organising such a wonderful initiative into Sheffield School.
