Block of Wood Sunday“The wood itself has no mysterious meaning. It is not a jinx or a good luck piece. But it stands for some wonderful ideas that help any boy or girl if they are used in ordinary life.”

— Roy Burkhart

The Block of Wood Sunday began three quarters of a century ago during the early days of Dr. Burkhart’s ministry. It is an opportunity for our church to celebrate our freshmen participants and welcome them into the church family. Each student will stand before the congregation to light a candle.

The Legend - After Jesus was crucified, those who loved Him most came to ask where the wood from the cross was kept. A man who knew wood very well discovered the stump where

the tree was cut to make the cross. A new tree was growing from the root of the stump. This came to represent the spirit of Jesus living on.

In 100 A.D., little crosses were made from the tree and distributed to churches. Any wood that could not be formed into a cross was given as a block of wood. The meaning was shared with the recipients. They promised never to tell the meaning, but to show it by living the message in their everyday lives.

When Harold Kushner’s three-year-old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease that would cut his life short, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: Why, God? Years later, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi, a parent, a reader and a human being. Often imitated but never superseded, When Bad Things Happen to Good People is a classic that offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow. Since its original publication in 1981, When Bad Things Happen to Good People has brought solace and hope to millions of readers and its author has become a nationally known spiritual leader.
