After an intensive term of learning, we are into the term for semestral examinations. We like to take this opportunity to thank parents and guardians for the continued strong support for our school and programmes. In preparation for the semestral assessment, let us share with everyone some of the tips to better performance. A. Eat and rest right - sufficient rest and proper nutrition is necessary for peak performance. Even on a daily basis, everyone should try to eat regular meals and have adequate sleep time. Taking away the use of devices usually helps young people to have better quality of rest. B. Practice good habits - we are regulated by routines. Adopting good habits enable us to have effective routines to deal with unfamiliar situations. For example being persistent and striving for accuracy forces us not to give up easily and to recheck our work to minimise mistakes. Even the habit of prayer helps us to find peace of mind and inner calm. C. Clarify what you know and what you do not know - often we do not ask enough questions to check if what we thought we knew was accurate. This is as important as clarifying what you do not know. D. Take notes and review - the habit of taking good notes during lessons and reviewing them at home helps to sharpen our understanding. The current practice of just video taping or photo taking in class dampens the ability to listen intently and taking good relevant notes. E. Revise regularly - consistency is key to success. Setting up a regular daily revision routine helps to revise the content learnt for the day and to understand the application. F. Keep physically fit - exercising helps to regulate the metabolism and keeps the mind alert. Keeping fit is excellent for stress relieve and also for healthy living. We hope these tips will prove useful. We like to take the opportunity to reaffirm several school stands: 1. We do not condone bullying in school and will mete the necessary consequences. The first approach is always to educate and help everyone grow and be better persons. However, if all avenues of assistance is exhausted and the school is unable to further help, the school may exercise the last option of expulsion. A 2. Class shuffling. This has been put in place and will continue. One of the purposes is to enable the children to have different social interactions and making new friends. We do not stream students according to abilities and the allocation is done in consultation with data and information collated from teachers. The classes are usually balanced out in the spread of gender across the classes of the levels. 3. Gifts for staff. Kindly note that the best gift for us is your support and acknowledgment of the hard work. 4. Fees and payment of school fees and capital levy. Kindly note that failure to pay will inconvenient the children including not allowing the collection of books, progress reports and going to new classes. The names of the child will not be added to the class list. 5. CCA fees. Please note that payment needs to be made for the CCA your child is doing. Failing to do this will result in the child being stopped from attending and the opening be given to other children. 6. Student initiated activities. The students had planned many activities such as anti bullying week by prefects and social enterprises by JC students. Also many charity projects by student council. We seek the continued strong support of parents for them. All in all, we want school improvement to enable growth of everyone and cannot do this without your support. We look forward to your support. Greeting parents / NHJS community, Welcome back from the holidays. After an intensive term of learning, we are into the term for semestral examinations. >>HABITS OF MIND – STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCE By Andrew Lim Sec3 Excellence Habits of Mind(HOM) was a really fun and life changing experience. We were staying in INAGRO, Bogor where we did all the fun and interesting actives planned and organized by the Nation High Jakarta School teachers. It was a really enjoyable 19 days campand I am going to further explain on what we did in the Habits Of Mind camp. In the Habits Of Mind camp, we learned about the 16 habits taught by Mr Leo. These 16 habits have really helped me after I came back from the camp. I have applied the most of the 16 habits and this has really changed on how I behave and react to something. In INAGRO, wealso plan a lunch with our parents. They came to INAGRO and had lunch with us. We are preparing and cook the foods for them. The foods might be not good but the purpose was to meet your parents and have fun with them. In INAGRO we did sports activity and also going to all the stations in there such as Peacock Farming, Buffalo Breeding, Mycorrhizae, Plant Tissue Culture, Compost, Fruit Farming and Fish Farming. We learn a lot from each station. We know how to breed the peacocks, buffalos and fish. It was really fun. Overall, I think that this camp was good and I hope next year, the secondary 2’s will be joining this 19 days camp. By Daniela Sugih Sec3 Grace On 28 August 2017 up to 15 September 2017, we, the Secondary 3 students attended this 19-day Habits of Mind camp in INAGRO, Bogor. Over there, we did a wide variety of activities which helped us to build the habits that we learnt so that we can apply it in our daily lives. During the first two weeks, we started off with learning the different habits by applying them in games, and heading over to different stations to learn about agriculture and the different lifestyles they had. We also had self-cooking sessions and a lunch with parents where we had to cook for our parents and give them a tour of INAGRO. In addition, we had a lot of experience with nature, such as the Cibodas trek and the 3-day and 2-night adventure camp in Kawah Ratu where we exercised our team-building skills. Throughout this camp, we learnt that teamwork must always come first because without taking care of each other and without supporting one another, tasks will not be accomplished. We must always think of others before yourself and not only focus on the welfare of yourself. Since we did not have our phones most of the time, I really got to spend a lot of time with my friends and also the teachers, where I learnt so much about them and about myself. I think we had a lot of fun because we bonded without our phones, and that is a once in a lifetime opportunity to me. Overall, I think that these habits of the mind has been beneficial towards us because we accomplished the tasks given in INAGRO using these habits and it will continue to help us overcome our difficulties in the future.

>> P5 MILESTONE PROGRAMME - Awareness of Self (AOS) 23rd and 24th September 2017 - Badak Air, Bogor Participants: 59 students (P5 classes) The goals:(a) Knowing one’s strengths and finding ways to put them to good use (b) Knowing one’s weaknesses and working towards turning them into strengths Comments: In the AOS, I showed much patience because I tried not to get mad while playing soccer. However, I did not show enough respect because I did not always listen attentively to the facilitators. - Axel (P5T) I showed resilience in the AOS. When my teammates and I played 10 in a Row, we needed to jump at the same time but we always failed. We needed to keep trying until we were able to complete 10 jumps in a row. – Jocelynn KSA (P5T) I am thankful for the experience. I am thankful for the food that was served, the games that were prepared, and the awards that we received. – Rachel (P5E) In the Dinner Challenge, I learnt to trust my friends. The challenge also showed me that they would always have my back. – Ryan Lee (P5E) I am thankful for the roommates I got, the hut we stayed in and the teachers who accompanied us in this trip. – Jocelyn HT (P5A) I know that I can be a better person after the AOS by not getting frustrated very easily, not giving up when I fail at something and always believing in myself. – Sarah (P5A) In this trip, I learnt new things about people who were not my classmates. I learnt these things about my roommates: Ryan is very organised and likes to joke around. Denzel T loves soccer. – Justin (P5G) I showed much resilience in this trip. I did not complain about staying under the sun and about the many bugs all around. – Steven AM (P5G)

The AOS Experience By Rayden (P5E) I had been waiting so badly for the AOS day to come. I could not even sleep at night because I was too thrilled. The trip to Badak Air Camping Grounds would teach us respect, responsibility, resilience, adaptability, gratitude, integrity, teamwork and patience. We gathered in the basketball court early in the morning and had our attendance checked. Then we boarded the buses. Shortly after, we were on our way. When we had our first glance of Badak Air, we were blown away by the scenery. The grass was green, the river was crystal clear and the sky was azure. Once we got off the buses, we were served with sumptuous welcome snacks and drinks. Then we went to the main hall where the facilitators officially welcomed us. We had fun learning and doing the ‘baby shark’ dance. We then went to the open ground where we were grouped. We played lots of fun and enjoyable games. After using up all our energy, we were ready to fuel–up with a delicious lunch. We then continued to be active doing the following Initiative Problem Solving Challenges: M Obstacle, Charades, Duck Hunting, 10 in a Row and Escape from Alcatraz. After getting all sweaty and tired, some went to take a shower while some played soccer. After taking a shower, we changed into our sleeping attire and had time to enjoy staying and getting comfortable in our huts. We then went to have dinner. Dinner was not the usual as it came with a twist – we had to switch roles feeding each other! It was quite embarrassing, if you ask me. After dinner, we had fun dressing ourselves up like superheroes with newspaper. Then we had to answer some reflection questions. We were ready to sleep by 11 p.m. The following morning, we went to the hall for a short and peaceful meditation. Right after that, we went for river trekking. Once we were done, we took a shower and had breakfast. We did the Solidity Challenge right after breakfast. We then packed up and kept our things in the dining area. After that, we had lunch before going back to the hall. In the hall, the facilitators gave us a closing speech and asked us to reflect on what had happened in the past two days. The teachers also reflected on their life experiences and shared a little about themselves with us. They then asked us to write about our strengths and weaknesses, among other things. We said our goodbyes to the facilitators and then boarded the buses. We happily left Badak AIr with a lot of new lessons learnt. We had adjusted well to our roommates and worked together efficiently with our teammates. We had bruises and struggles along the way but we always stayed resilient and just kept going. For me, the highlight of the trip was the river trekking. It seemed really hard at first, but eventually we were all able to do it. I am so proud to be part of this awesome group of resilient students!

>> S1 CAMP - >> Indonesian Culture Appreciation to Jogjakarta By : Melgwyn Gunawan S1P I have always looked forward to school camps because it is the time when I could bond and create wonderful memories with my friends and teachers. This year, the Secondary One students went on a Learning Journey to Jogja. This memorable four-day trip taught us new life skills and gave us valuable experiences that we will never forget. The fist day was very grueling as many of us had sleepless nights. All of us had to report at the airport at 3:30 am. Upon arrival, it was already 6:40 am. We directly visited the Sultan’s Palaceand then we went to Taman Sari, Water Castle to learn the history of those two historical places. After lunch, we went to Kota Gede to practice silver work. I learned how to make one by the guidance of the workers there. Since it was quite hard and complicated to finish a product on time for beginners like us, the one who guided us helped us finish it. Next, we made Batik with the use of boiling melted wax and followed a pattern to draw something on the cloth given to us. These two activities taught us the importance of patience and hard work. These activities also reminded us to always persevere in all tasks that we need to accomplish. As darkness crawled across the sky, we went to our hotel. After we had freshened up, all of us had our dinner at Prambanan Garden. After dinner, we watched the Ramayana performance. We had a long and tiring day but full of learning and new experiences. On the second day, we had to wake up at 5:30 am. After breakfast, we visited Kembang Arum village for river trailing and buffalo ride. The river trailing was one of the most exciting activities in this trip as it was both fun and very challenging for me to avoid falling down at the rocks. From this activity, I learned that I should know how to be cautious and show concern to others. After getting wet, all of us went to the rice field for the buffalo ride. Most of us joined without hesitation and liked this activity. However, some of my friends and I went back to the village earlier since we werereluctant to ride a buffalo. We had our lunch there before going to the Borobudur Temple. From my learning experience visiting this temple, I learned its history and I got to understand what had happened there. Before returning back to the hotel, we went to a restaurant for dinner. After a long tiring day, we finally returned to the hotel and took a rest. On the third day, we had to wake up at 2:30 am. We set off for Vogel Hostel, Kaliurang for our Merapi Mt. Trekking. Once we reached the base camp, we had a briefing. We also aimed to see the sunrise, but sadly, we missed to see it. Overall, trekking was tiring yet fun. When we finished trekking at around 10 am,we headed to the Prambanan Temple and learned the wonderful history of it. It was time for us to feed our growling stomach after a long tiring trek. We had lunch at Bale Bengong Restaurant before going to the Airforce Museum. At that museum, I learned the interesting history of all the military aviation forces there. Before sunset, we had the opportunity to swim at the hotel. We then ended the day by having our dinner at the hotel. On our last day, we had our breakfast at the hotel at 6 am. After checking out, we headed to GunungMerapi Museum and then to Vrederburg Museum. Before ending our camp in Jogja, we had our lunch at Handayani Restaurant. Finally, we went to the airport. Our flight got delayed, so we waited patiently. After waiting for an hour,we departed Jogja and headed back to Jakarta. This four-day trip has been very exhausting yet fun and memorable. According to Ashley from S1A, sleep is very precious. Without having enough rest, we would not have that much energy to do the tasks or activities for the day. While Gabriel Chong from S1P thinks that this trip was too short and he hopes that he could extend it. Aside from learning new things, we also got the chance to apply some of the PIAGET values such as teamwork and adaptability in real life situations. We really appreciate the teachers for accompanying us on this four-day journey. I personally think that this trip was too short and I certainly hope that the school would organize more learning journeys like this.

>> FREE SCHOOL Dates: 6 September 2017-2 December 2017 Venue: NHJS classrooms Participants: 55 children (P4 and P5) The objectives: - to help the underprivileged people living in Jakarta - to give back to the community - to help the future of Indonesia by educating the children in West Jakarta Free School Teachers: Free school is a great way to teach children skills that they can use to help them throughout their everyday lives. We use fun and interactive ways to make sure they're enjoying the lesson, as well as acquire new knowledge. Since education is vital and not everyone in Indonesia have access to it, this is a great way of making sure that they learn something that they maybe can't somewhere else. By: Kareender Kaur (J1P), head teacher of grade 4 In free school, you learn just as much stuff as we teach. We learned on how privileged we are in our community. During free school, we felt the struggle and stress our teachers and parents went through when raising us up. Now, i can truly understand that we should respect and appreciate our teachers and parents. By: Bunga Amelia Dewi NHJS Students Through the Free School program, I have learnt to be more grateful to my parents because I realize how privileged I am compared to others. I also learnt to be more grateful to my teachers as I know now how much work teachers have to put in to teachingme. Teaching the children is fun and challenging at the same time.
