OESOPHAGEAL TUBES

Oesophagostomy Tubes are catheters that are introduced into the oesophagus via a percutaneous puncture in the side of the neck for enteral feeding. Nasogastric tubes are commonly used for enteral feeding, but the size of the animal’s nostrils limits the size of the tube that can be used. Commercial liquid diets can go down the smaller diameter tubes, but larger tubes such as the oesophagostomy tubes allow the use of less expensive solutions which are thicker in form.

FOLEY CATHETERS (SILICONE)

Foley Catheters allow continuous drainage from the urinary bladder and are also for contrast studies of the urodenital tract. Silicone’s inert and non-irritating properties allow for medium to long term placement of these catheters. Silicone is less irritating than other materials to the mucosal lining of both the urethra and the urinary bladder. These catheters vary in length; the longer ones are typically used for males and the shorter ones for females.

Theballoonsonthesecathetersshouldbefilledwithsterile water only and aid in keeping the catheter in place. The balloons are porous toairandwillnotstayinflatedwhenplacedinsideanybodycavity.Sterilesalineshould not be used either. The saline will eventually form crystalsinsidetheballoonandwillcausedamagetoit,causingittoleakorblocktheinflationline.

Forcontraststudies(radiographicstudies),thecatheterisinsertedintotheurethra,theballooninflatedwithsterilewater,andanionicorganic iodide contrast medium is injected into the catheter while a series of radiographs are taken. These contrast studies are typically performed to look for narrowing of the urethra, or tumors in the urinary bladder.

Pneumothorax Sets

Features:• Pneumothorax sets are used to treat tension or spontaneous pneumothorax which

isairinthethoraciccavity.Airinthethoraciccavitymakesitmoredifficultfortheanimal to breathe. Tension pneumothorax occurs when air escapes into the pleural cavity from a bronchus, but cannot regain entry into the lungs. This continuous increase of air pressure in the pleural cavity advances the collapse of the lung. Spontaneous pneumothorax is of unknown cause. The polyurethane catheter is placed with a direct puncture between the 7th and 8th rib. It is always important that when the catheter is introduced that there is a closed stopcock on the end opposite that is being inserted to stop the intake of air into the thoracic cavity. It works best to pull the skin forward before puncture, the skin will help seal off an external air from entering once it is released. After the tube is secured, bandaged, suction will be applied via a continuous suction unit, manual syringe technique or via a Heimlich One-Way Valve (HV100)

Pericardiocentesis Catheter Set

technique offers a greater level of safety than direct needle puncture. With the animal in lateral recumbency, the needle is introduced through the fourth intercostal space and should be advanced slowly towards the heart. Resistance will be felt from the pericardium, then a sudden release as it is penetrated. If the needle touches the myocardium, premature ventricular contractions will be seen on an ECG monitor. Once in place, thread the wire guide through the needle into the pericardial sac and remove the needle. The dilator can be used to open up a tract through the skin if necessary. The catheter pigtail is then unrolled over the thumb and threaded onto the wire guide and down into the pericardial sac. When thewireguideisremoved,thepigtailconfigurationretainsthecathetertipwithinthe sac.

Peritoneal Lavage Catheter

Features:• This catheter is used to infuse and withdraw rinsing solutions in body cavities in
