A Biography about Stephen Hawking

This week you will be writing a biography to inform children in

year 6 who are interested in space about Stephen Hawking.

A biography is an information text about a real person’s life. It focuses on their most incredible achievements. The theme of this writing is space

so you will only need to include information that is relevant to his achievements linked to space. Bear that in mind!

Over the next 2 days you are going to plan your biography. You can do this about any scientist or person, linked to space. We are going to suggest you do Stephen Hawking and will give you the support for Stephen Hawking but if you have information on someone else and would prefer to write about someone

else, please do.

You are going to start by researching them and creating a mind-map.

If you are doing Stephen Hawking, here are some links that might help: https://www.ducksters.com/biography/scientists/stephen_hawking.php

Creating a Mind-MapRemember, you need to organise your mind-map into categories. I (Miss White) have some very strict rules about mind-maps and love to show off how good my classes look so I hope you can do me proud and try to keep them as neat and as organised at home.

1. You need to colour code each category so it is clear which section each piece of information is linked to e.g. childhood, ASD, space, etc.

2. You need to use a ruler to draw ALL lines. 3. Write your information in pen/pencil but draw your lines in the correctly

coloured pen/pencil. 4. You don’t need to add bubbles or anything. 5. Write in note form – don’t copy complete sentences.

Need a challenge? Think of either your own person (linked to space) to research or add your own categories into the mind-map.Need some help? I have started the mind-map for you:

We have given you 2 days to do this as we know it may take you a while to collect enough information to write about. We only expect you to submit it once when it is complete. If you need help between, message us to let us know. It is

what we are here for!

Over the next 2 days you are going to write your biography. You will need to include:

1. A short introduction to introduce your writing and the person you are going to write about. You need to make it sound incredibly interesting so I am desperate to read on.

Page 3: 4th...  · Web viewUsed a wider range of sentence types e.g. you might add an extra clause, using an –ing or –ed word. Add extra information, using parenthesis (commas, brackets

2. 2-4 paragraphs on the different topics you have researched about your person. Use a sub-heading before each one and write about them in chronological (time) order.

3. A short conclusion to wrap your writing up so it doesn’t just finish randomly instead make it tell me where I can go to find out more.

Each day you need to: 1. Read your mind-map carefully and decide which order you need to write

about each section. You might not need to write about all of them. 2. Have a look at the WAGOLL and remind yourself how a biography

sounds. 3. Write 2-4 paragraphs, using the information you have and rehearsing

your sentences before you write them down. 4. Edit/improve your writing using the editing map and a different colour

pen/pencil. 5. On day 2, start by reading your work from the previous day.

How will I know I have been successful? All will include:(You know Miss

Howell won’t mark it if you haven’t edited

for this)

Most will include:

Some will include:

Use capital letters and full stops accurately.

Use simple, compound (FANBOYS) and complex sentences (I SAW A WABUB).

Written to inform, using true facts and adding extra detail.

Written in paragraph.

Used subtitles.

Written in chronological order (time order).

Used fronted adverbials (followed by a comma) to tell me when it happened.

Used a colon to introduce a list.

Used a relative clause to add extra information.

Used technical vocabulary to make it more specific.

Used a wider range of sentence types e.g. you might add an extra clause, using an –ing or –ed word.

Add extra information, using parenthesis (commas, brackets and dashes).

Thought about what effect you want to achieve in your writing and edited it to ensure every sentence helps towards this. E.g. do you want your reader to feel sorry for the person you are writing about? Think they are incredible? Feel anger towards them? Think about the changes you can make to the information you include and the vocabulary choices you make to achieve your chosen effect.

We have given you 2 days to do this as we know it may take you a while to write it, edit it and improve it. We only expect you to submit it once when it is complete. If you need help between, message us to let us know. It is what we

are here for!
