You may recall that our federal Liberal government has – by bureaucratic diktat, with no debate in Parliament – mandated that all organizations applying for the Canada Summer Jobs Grant must support the core valuesof this Govern- ment, like abortion & euthanasia. (The great irony here is, of course, that they are actually working against real, con- stitutional core values like freedom of conscience and religion, in their bold, nasty imposition of an ideological test!) Our Bishop has taken a prophetic stand, stating that our diocese will not apply for any CSJG funds, which means that we will face a shortfall of approximately $35,000.00 across the diocese. The grant money had previously paid for internships at many diocesan events & programs, like Catho- lic Christian Leadership Camp, which has benefitted many of our youth. We need to send a strong message to our government – and our nation – that we will not be co- opted by the ideology of any political party when it comes to the question of respecting all human life on earth. Please give generously to our Summer Jobs collection (for the memo line of your cheque to our parishes), and help our Church serve our youth and take a stand for freedom in Cana- da! I trust everyone has received a copy (emailed or print at the church doors) of the Catholic Update article on examin- ing our conscience in the light of the Ten Commandments: the diocese-wide Day of Confessions is one initiative that seems to resonate with people – please put in the effort to cel- ebrate well the sacrament of healing & love on Wednesday, March 21 st .
