The Month of May: Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Jennifer Hubbard

My little one would lay her head on my chest as she drifted off to sleep. Her deep rhythmic breathing would settle my soul, and I would be filled with a sense of awe that she was mine. I am not sure if at that time I tru-ly understood mother-hood is a gift that comes with an awesome re-sponsibility. As a moth-er, I am called to be an example of gentleness, grace, and love so that through me, my children see our Father. In his wisdom, God knows that this needs to be modeled and chooses Mary to do it. One of my favorite im-ages of her depicts Jesus peacefully sleeping on her chest. Mary’s head tilts ever so slightly into the Baby, and it is almost as if his beating heart has settled hers. Mary’s exam-ple teaches me that it is the quiet, everyday moments that allow God’s love to penetrate deeply. My brave one is no longer a baby. And still there are times when miss-ing his sister weighs heavy and he quietly cuddles in next to me. In those mo-ments, his head flops into that familiar spot between my shoulder and jaw-the place where, as a baby, he found security. It is the place where, the steady rhythm of his breathing assures me now as it did then, he finally sleeps. I have learned to breathe deep in this moment –to lean in ever so slightly and allow my head to rest on my brave one’s, just as Mary’s rested on Jesus’. I breathe deep, knowing this is a gift-a sacred moment between mother and child where God’s love penetrates and souls are settled.

The TV is my shepherd I shall not want, It makes me to lie down on the sofa. It leads me away from the Faith, It destroys my soul. It leads me to the path of sex and violence for the advertiser’s sake. Even though I walk in the shadow of Christian responsibili-ties, There will be no interruption, for the TV is with me. Its cable and remote control, they comfort me It prepares a commercial for me in the midst of my worldliness And anoints my head with secular hu-manism and consumerism. My covetousness runs over; Surely ignorance and laziness shall fol-low me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of wretchedness watching TV forever.

A pastor was teaching the 23rd Psalm in the Sunday school. He told the children about sheep, that they weren't smart and needed lots of guidance, and that a shepherd's job was to stay close to the sheep, protect them from wild animals and keep them from wandering off. He pointed to the little children in the room and said that they were the sheep and needed lots of guid-ance. Then the pastor put his hands out to the side, palms up in a dramatic gesture, and with raised eyebrows said to the chil-dren, "If you are the sheep, then who is the shepherd?" He was pretty sure that all the kids would point out to him as the shep-herd. A silence of a few seconds followed. Then a young girl said, "Jesus! Jesus is the shepherd." The young pastor, obviously caught by surprise, said to the little girl, "Well then, who am I?" The girl frowned thoughtfully and then said with a shrug, "I guess you must be a sheep dog." It's been said that every pastor ought to have six weeks of vacation each year, because if he is a really good shepherd, he deserves it; and if he is not a very good shepherd, his congregation deserves it.
