4th Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 29, 2017 Created in Gods image for eternal life with Him, it is no small wonder we long for heaven, comfort, peace, comple- tion. Our experience in the world, as Paul says, is that we are foolish, powerless nobodies. We have this false belief that God is mighty, strong, and powerful in ways that make our smallness and incapacity problems. But God is mighty by His patience, strong in His infancy, powerful in His choice to need our love. God chose what is foolish, weak and lowly to lift us to glory in Him. When we choose to receive what is foolish, weak, and lowly in ourselves and each other, we live God s small and simple way. Beatitude people understand there is much grace in the little things we do every day: returning a harsh word with kind- ness, doing another load of dishes, resisting procrastination, choosing forgiveness when we would rather hold a grudge. These things often hurt because we cannot see the whole picture now, but we dont need to. Our lives are enough when we live them with simplicity and humility. Lets hope our climate soon catches up. One of my favourite Scripture commentators has written how the Sunday Gospel Readings for these first weeks of the Liturgical Year are the best intro- duction to the great journey of Lent : I want to share with you my vision for how our parish communities will be re- newed in our Christian journey. During my retreat in No- vember, I was blessed to read Henri Nouwens The Way of the Heart – The Spirituality of the Desert Fathers and Mothers. This short (94 pages!) little wonder on solitude, silence & prayer re-invigorated me with the notion that “[p] recisely because our secular milieu offers so few spiritual disciplines, we have to develop our own.(p.30) As a result, I will be giving a parish mission on Prayer & Praying the first week of Lent: each evening I will offer a presentation on a particular style of prayer, and together well experience (daytime or evening) prayer in one of four popular ways that Catholics are praying today (i.e., the Liturgy of the Hours/ Divine Office, Centering Prayer, Taizé and Lectio Divina ). I will need help with this – every Mission preacher I have encountered agrees that it is always worthwhile to have someone share about their own personal experience in a wit- ness talk. (While I have dabbled in all the above styles of prayer, the Divine Office is my main mode of pray- ing, so I would ask anyone who has been praying using these other forms to please share a bit of your experience with our parish family. If need be, I can bring in some people I know, but I think we would all prefer to hear from praying people within our own communities.) Our Pastoral Plan has identi- fied a need for catechesis/adult faith development : I would like to put together a series of talks (Question & Answer ses- sions) that people can either attend personally or view later for reflection or small group discussion . Again, I will need help with this – hosting the sessions (hospitality ), vide- oing (any students looking for Community Service hours?) the talk, organizing small groups (training provided for all group leaders ) and cataloging all our resources in the Parish Office. We have wonderful resources available – be- tween the Knights of Columbus catechetical booklets (for people who wish to go deeper) and our Catholic Update pamphlets, we will have an easy read from the latest sources on topics that are occupying our attention every day. Do you have a particular topic youd like discussed? Drop a note in the collection basket or contact the Office with your sugges- tions (Ill survey all the parish groups to see what theyre interested in). One particular catechetical resource is Light- house Catholic Media cds: Steven Eckert (a pasto- ral-year seminarian) will be visiting our parishes the week- end of Feb. 4/5 th to speak about LCM. The Feast of St. Blaise (Feb. 3 rd ) will see us blessing throats following Mass with the students of St. Boniface School at 9:15am: come join in the (healthy) fun! Have a blessed week. Fr. Matt

Dear Parishioners: well, it must be w inter because I’ve played Pepper two nights in the same week! Let’s hope our climate soon catches up.
