You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, notwith a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a

show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throwFrisbees, the po tato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You

may think you have ov ereaten, but it is patriotism. Erma Bombeck

    Why We Celebrate!

O n July 4 th, 1776, the AmericanColonies declared themselvesindependent of Britain. In a detaileddecree, our Declaration of Independence, the colonistsexpressed their decision to nolonger be governed by the kings of England who had been indisputablyunjust to them until that moment.Though we often call the holidaysimply the 4 th of July the day theUnited States of America was

born we should also remember itsthe day we established our independence from tyranny and taxation withoutrepresentation.

The goals and ideas put forth in the Declaration of Independence still stand and arefought for and protected throughout the world, and that document symbolizes all theideals that we, as Americans believein basic freedoms that appear in thedeclaration as the first 10amendments, better known as the Billof Rights. They include freedom of

speech, religion and press, the right tobear arms and the right to a trial by

    jury.

Under the command of GeneralGeorge Washington, the courageouscolonists fought and defeated a muchlarger, better-trained, better-equippedBritish military in this Revolutionary

War and won our independence. To this day, we cherish the freedom so many havegiven their lives to protect and perpetuate for more than two centuries.

Those who won our independ ence believed liberty to be thesecret of happiness and cou rage to be the secret of liberty.

U.S Representative George Nethercutt on Patriotism

M ost Americans consider themselves patriotic, because theylove our country, they fly the American flag on holidays likeMemorial Day and the 4 th of July and they truly appreciate thefreedoms provided by the USA. Others take their patriotism tothe limit they serve in our military and sometimes sacrificetheir lives. And some choose to represent the people andgovern according to our Constitution on local, state andnational levels.

Former Congressman George R. Nethercutt, Jr. served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2005, sent there by the citizens of Washington states 5 th congressional district. He was a member of the House Committee on Appropriations andthe House Science Committee.

Today, Mr. Nethercutt leads TheGeorge Nethercutt Foundation, anonprofit, nonpartisan organizationthat exists to develop in youngadults an understanding of government, business, public policyissues and civics, and to fosterleadership qualities that will addvalue to their communities. Clearly, he believes in the importance of young people learning how our governmentworks and realizing how incredibly fortunate we are to live in this country.

We asked him to talk about the meaning of Independence Day and we also asked himfor a favorite holiday recipe, which he happily provided (and it sounds yummy!)

Why do you think so many Americans feel compelled to embrace and celebrate ourIndependence Day?

Independence Day connects Americans to our nation's past and affords us a special day of commemoration to give thanks for those who have sacrificed historically in order that we may enjoy a free country.

Why do you think its important for Americans to havemore than just a passing knowledge of our history?

Knowing the story of the United States gives American citizens the basis for perpetuating the freedoms and

principles of liberty for which our country stands.

What do we risk when our citizens lack a basicunderstanding of our history and how we became whowe are?

Unless Americans know how the United States came to exist, they are unprepared to stand up for democracy and representative government, and defend the freedoms our system of government provides.

Whats the best way to encourage adults to learn moreabout our history, our Bill of rights and ourConstitution?

Reading and knowing about our nation's founding documents will provide Americans with a true sense of our national purpose and endow them with a belief in the enduring principles of liberty. Studying and understanding the principles of democracy will instill civic pride and patriotism, and produce a more civically engaged populace. Using modern media (television and internet) can provide immediate civics information to enhance adult education. Adults should take online

the Intercollegiate Studies Institute civic literacy exam ( click here ) to see how well they know basic American civics, and then study the questions missed in order to have a fresh appreciation for national history and government.

How can schools and educators place more emphasis

on American history to help create a more enlightened, more patriotic public?

Schools and educators can embrace the drama and excitement of American history by teaching students the story of the United States. As Americans know the story, they will be curious about and seek further information about an era or event in American history.

Studying the music of history can also enhance the educational experience for students, and make learning fun.

What can our immigrants do to learn more about Americaspast and, consequently, have greater respect for and take

    pride in their new home?

Read more biographies of the historic leaders that are part of the American story. Visit historic locations in American cities and towns. Become well versed in the documents of US history in order to understand the concepts of American liberty and independence. Learn the music of American

history and then learn about the eras that contain such music.

How do you celebrate Independence Day?

I usually celebrate Independence Day on beautiful Priest Lake, Idaho, watching fireworks displays on the lake, enjoying a meal from the barbecue with family and remembering not to take our country's freedoms for

    granted.

What are some of your favorite 4 th of July memories?

As a former Congressman, I have fond memories of July 4 parades in the towns and cities of Eastern Washington, seeing patriotic American families celebrating our country's independence. I recall my parents not letting me shoot off any fireworks until I explained to them each year my understanding of why our country celebrates July 4. As a child, I know it was an effective way for me to express my patriotic feelings. As a parent, I have held my children to the same standards and practice.

Do you have any red, white and blue recipes youd like to share with us?

This is a savory marinade for flank steak or any other cut of meat. It is ideal for a July 4 barbecue.

Ingredients: 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger 1/3 cup of sherry 1/2 teaspoon of pepper 1 cup of soy sauce 1/2 cup of pineapple juice 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

    4 th of July Festivities

As our friend Richard Atkins of Improving Communications suggests, we should call the holiday by its true name Independence Day. It makes it more meaningful, and causes me to pause and think about the event. When people call events by their date name, they lose focus on what the event is about. After all, we never hear people say things like Happy December 31 st ! or Merry December 25 th ! Excellent point, Richard!

Like Christmas and Thanksgiving, Independence Day is a family holiday brimming withcelebratory traditions handed down from generation to generation, yet ever evolving asyoung families put their own contemporary spin on the commemorations of the past. Here are some options for honoring our past, reaffirming our future and living in themoment:

Honor the Military celebrate your hometownheroes! Whether theyre veterans or on active duty, you can acknowledge the sacrifices made by ourmilitary and their families with a parade, a picnic, abarbecue or by putting together care packages to sendoverseas for our men and women in service. Visit alocal military cemetery and place small American flagson each grave.Attend a Baseball Game Enjoy our national pastimewith all the trimmings, like hot dogs, hamburgers, peanuts, pretzels and all theother goodies that go along with a day at the ballpark.Party at a Picnic In your own backyard, at a nearby park or state park, by thelake, at the beach or wherever you find a table and benches or a spot to spreadout a blanket. Fill a basket full of fried chicken, sandwiches or whatever yourheart desires. Eat, drink and be FREE!

youll see parades from a different perspective, but sitting along the parade routewatching it go by is fun, too, and it saves your energy for the rest of the day.Catch a Fireworks Display Independence Day simply wouldnt be the samewithout a firework display. Cities, towns and neighborhoods often provide aspectacular, free fireworks show the perfect way to cap off your 4 th of July!

Now lets see how a few of our compatriots rally round the flag

Tanya Peila and her family have a fabulous 4 th! She even includes some super decorationand favor ideas!

My husband is an ex-Marine and we have LOTS of friends still active in the Army. Every year we have a BIG picnic with our family and friends for the Fourth of July. We often have small fireworks, and the backyard is

decked out in our Red, White, and Blue. We have flags, banners, candles, red/white/blue tootsie rolls, red/white/blue candy necklaces, patriotic hats and head bands. I have a 6-year- old and a 1-year-old. We talk with our son about the war in Iraq and what our soldiers or "Army Men" as he calls them are doing over there. When in public, he always thanks men and women in uniform for "protecting us from the bad guys".

We have apple pie and the kids play in the yard. Our Independence Day is a great honor for me. Many men and women have lost their lives for me to be where I am today. The United States is a great nation, even though some may not agree, but they have not weighed their options. To celebrate "our" birthday should be an honor. We also have a friend (the local County Fire Marshal) who also throws a HUGE summer "Americana" bash, because we should celebrate our

Our thanks to Murphy Kulasa for sending us this perfect example of how a retirementcommunity can band together for a day of patriotic fun:

The day begins at 7AM when members of the Robson Ranch Support Our Troops(SOT) place 180 flags in the median from the Front Gate to the Veterans Park. Theannual parade begins at 9AM. Participants from outside Robson Ranch include theDenton Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America Honor Guard, US military

personnel and vehicles, local political officials, Denton Fire and Rescue, and theDenton Police Department. We will also have a non-military fly-over.

But, the heart and soul of our parade are the Robson Ranchresidents. They enter floats, vintage cars, motorcycles, decorated golf carts, bikes, and wagons. Clubs, Families, and individuals walk in the parade, some wearing their favorite

patriotic costumes. Our Grand Marshall is selected from one of the 400 Veterans that live at Robson Ranch. Robson Ranchresidents, along with their grandkids, friends, and families, form the enthusiastic spectatorsthat line the parade route eachyear.

Immediately following the parade, there is a patriotic sing-along in the Club HouseBall Room. After the attendees work up their appetites singing, they head for moremusic and a picnic lunch [on the premises], sponsored by the Robson RanchKiwanis Club, and to complete the day of celebration, the Denton Community Band conducts an evening concert in the Club House.

Throughout the day, residents and visitors are welcome to browse through theVeterans Park Tribute Book located in the Club House. The Tribute Book contains

photos and biographies of the veterans honored in Robson Ranch Veterans Park, where the parade began earlier in the day.

Our next contributor, a Staff Sergeant serving in the United States Army, writes songs, stories and poetry from the mind of a soldier. Were honored to bring you Staff Sergeant

Edward Val s thoughts on celebrating Independence Day, along with two of his poems:

I celebrate the 4th of July the only way it should be. My family begins by comingtogether at a park or someones home. We each bring something to eat and drink, and we share in the spoils. We come together because every man in my family for four generations has served in the military. Today. however, only my father, my brother and I are still alive to take part, and my youngest brother will be joining our ranks soon. Im also a published author and write poems to immortalize the day and what it means to me. I do this so the memory of all the friends I have lost during my three tours to Iraq can live forever, and because I understand that Freedom isnt free for everyone, that certain individuals have to step up and makethe sacrifice to preserve all we know and love.

    Essence of Summer

The summer lingers on, yearningAs the wind sighs, blowing country grass to and froThe sun shines from up above,As clouds cast their shadows upon the world belowAnd the cycle continues moving slowlySo willing eyes can see, embrace life, every breathAnd its beauty

For if not youll wake one day filled with regret At having never tried, at having never metLife and all its wonders, life so wild and free,And above all else youll remain forever blind To the knowledge of me.

    Grill Safety

These Grill Safety tips first appeared in our National Hamburger Day E-guide, and wethink they re worth repeating. The folks at the New England Propane Gas Association sent us these super tips for safe grilling with ever-popular propane gas. To reduce any riskof an unwanted fire or burns from propane, consumers should routinely follow some keytips for the safe operation and maintenance of their grills:

    Ventilation

Always keep the lid open when lighting your grill.Keep the grill in a well-ventilated area, at least tenfeet away from the house and at least three feetaway from trees and shrubs.Never use a grill indoors or in any unventilatedspace. This is both a fire and carbon monoxidepoisoning hazard.Always use and store propane cylinders outdoors inan upright position. After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it homeimmediately. While transporting the cylinder, keepyour vehicle ventilated and the valve closed orcapped.Never use, store or transport propane cylinders near high temperatures.

    Firing Up The Grill Safely

Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. Never use starter fluid withpropane grills. Before connecting the cylinder to your grill forthe first time, use a leak detection solution (a50/50 mixture of water and liquid soap) tocheck connections for leaks. Keep all flammablematerials away from the grill. If you detect aleak, immediately turn off gas and do not

attempt to light the grill again until the leak isfixed. If the grill does not ignite within ten seconds, turn off the gas, keep the lid open and wait fiveminutes before trying again.

When refilling the cylinder, always have thesupplier check for dents, damage, rust, and leaks.Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder.

Regularly check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects orfood grease.Use a pipe cleaner or wire to clear blockage, pushing it through to the main partof the burner.

    General Safety Tips

Designate the grilling area a No Play Zone, keeping kids and pets away from theequipment.Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Never leave a hot grillunattended.

When your grill is not in use, cover the disconnected hose-endfittings with plastic bags orprotective caps to keep themclean.Always follow grillmanufacturers instructions andkeep written materials on hand.Never attempt to repair the tankvalve or the appliance yourself.See a propane gas dealer or aqualified appliance repairperson. Be sure to locate your model number and the manufacturers consumerinquiry phone number and write them on the front page of your manual. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder vale, turning it to

the right (clockwise). Immediately leave the area and call 911 or your local firedepartment. Before you use the grill again, have a qualified service technicianinspect your cylinder.

Do not smoke when handling any type of sparkler.

Do not use sparklers while under the influence of alcohol.

Always use products that are legal in your community. States and localcommunities regulate the type of products that may be sold and used by
