Presentation Day

On Saturday 29th October the Nambucca Valley Garden Club organised a

Garden Fair to raise money for vital equipment for Macksville Hospital. There

was a variety of plant, food, vegetable and flower stalls and competitions

running throughout the day. Local artists had artworks on display as well. But

the highlight of the day, for our students Kiarra Cohen and Marni Girle, was

the opportunity to meet and cook with local celebrity chefs Clayton Donovan

and Billie McKay. The girls were thrilled to be assisting Clayton and Billie.

They helped with the set up, preparing the dishes and cleaning up. They then

served the audience Beef Tacos and Mini Lemon Meringue Pies made by

Billie. Clayton’s dish included cheeses, from the Eungai Buffalo Farm, which

he smoked on stage. He also used a variety of vegetables and herbs that he

sourced from the stalls at the Gala. From all accounts it was a fantastic day for

the Garden Club and Macksville Hospital. Congratulations to Kiarra and Marni

on a fabulous job. They had a wonderful time working with accomplished

chefs and while they were a little awe struck when they first arrived they soon

found their groove and did a fantastic job impressing both Clayton and Billie

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Community

The Dreamworld excursion has been cancelled for 2016. Until the Queensland Government has

carried out its auditing processes in regards to the safety of all theme parks we have decided to err

on the side of caution. We look forward to going back to Dreamworld in 2017.

On Monday afternoon staff spent the afternoon delving into the School Excellence Framework or

SEF. The SEF supports all NSW Public Schools in their pursuit of excellence by providing a clear

description of the key elements of high-quality practice across the three domains of learning,

teaching and leading. The Framework describes fourteen elements across these three domains

which define the core business of excellent schools in three stages. This activity was of great benefit

to all staff at NHHS as we had genuine discussions about where we believed we sat as a school

across the framework and the evidence we believe justifies where we are in relation to the framework.

During the week as I was writing my Year 12 formal speech I came across some information about Generation Z or anyone born between 1995 and 2009. Also known as Gen Zed, iGen, screenagers or dot com kids. Generation Z children are technology driven in that they seamlessly integrate technology into their everyday realities. Evidence of this is the fact that if social media sites were counted as countries Facebook, Instagram and Twitter would be in the top six populations with China, India and the USA! For more information about your child’s generation please visit http://generationz.com.au/

As always please contact me at the school if you have any queries as to your child’s education.

Highlight of the fortnight:

A great example of the digital ability and creativity of our Gen Zeds was on display at the school assembly on Tuesday. Ms

Campbell’s Year 10 Photography class showed the school the digital animation films they have been producing. To

paraphrase Mark McCrindle, developer of the generation z website: Generation Z are the most technologically literate and

socially empowered generation of children ever. They are highly intuitive and confident unaided users of digital technology

as they have grown up with and, in many cases, have been significantly socialised by electronic media devices. This was

very evident in what the Year 10’s had created. Great work Year 10! The film is available for viewing on the school website.

Last week, eighteen Year 8 Science students were lucky enough to be involved in a program called “Far Out Science”. We

travelled to the University of New England in Armidale to be immersed in a day of fun filled science activities. Far Out Science

is part of a nation-wide program that encourages students to explore career options in Science.

We left Nambucca at 6.15am. When we arrived at the University

we met with the other 600 students from around the region and

our UNE tour guides.

Out of the 20 possible activities we created fake wounds,

participated in the spectacular Extreme Chemistry show ,

identified plants that helped police solve a murder and

discovered a dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times better than

ours. We also learnt that there are a wide variety of career and

research options in Science.

We would like to thank Mrs Dedman for giving us the opportunity

to be involved in such an educational and fun day. A special

thank you goes to Miss Barnett for being our awesome bus

driver for the day.

Nambucca Heads High School now has a dedicated mobile phone number for parents/carers to SMS the

school when they need to contact us regarding their student. You are able to advise the school of your

child’s absence, changes to contact details, leave messages for teachers etc.

The number is 0476 857 222

YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO RING THIS NUMBER IT IS ONLY FOR SMS.

Office staff will check for messages throughout the day and respond where necessary.

Year 8 students at the University of New England

Year 12 Year 12 have just about finished their exams, good luck! Pupils are reminded to arrange their UAC preferences to correspond with their Early Entry applications. UNE and Southern Cross University (STAR Scheme) Early Entries are the exception, as they are being processed directly by the Universities. So a pupil’s UAC preference does not need to include UNE or SCU for the early round offers. REMEMBER, once you have received and accepted, any round offer to change your UAC preferences to match your next round preferred courses. Year 11 Year 11 have completed their subject interviews as part of organising their study pattern for the HSC. Pupils who have changed subjects (where allowable or dropped subjects) need to return their “change of subject / unit” yellow form after all signatures are obtained (including parents) before they can change their timetable. Any parents with questions regarding the process or implications are very welcome to contact the Careers Adviser at the school on 02 6568 6777 to organise to meet or have a chat. Changes to a student’s subjects may affect their HSC / ATAR compliance (ATAR being a rank given by Universities when offering positions in courses). Year 10 Work Related And Life Skills – (WRALS) information. Pupils are making their selections for their first week of WRALS (Credentials Week) with some activities filling on a “first in, first served” basis. Parents please ensure your child makes their selections ASAP to help with organisation. Pupils were given a booklet with all information and permission notes included. PARENTS PLEASE support this initiative by ensuring your child’s attendance and participation. The program relies on the booking of Resources, Individuals and Groups well in advance. These bookings are based on the forms pupils return indicating their choices. If your child has returned a note stating their choices it is assumed they will attend. See the list of activities offered below. Activities will only run where numbers meet requirements. Some activities have limited spaces, which will be allocated on 1) return of note and 2) money (where required, by pay by date) Week 6 Credentials Week – Choose activities for each day Monday 14th November - Friday 18th November Activities include: Responsible Service of Alcohol / Responsible Conduct of Gambling Courses, Barista Course, Construction Projects, Masterchef (Cooking Workshop), Volunteer Aged Care, Art Project, Boat Licence Course, First Aid Course, Rural Fire Service Workshop, Textile Workshop Week 7 Work Experience (compulsory) - Monday 21st November– Friday 25th November Week 8 Work Experience (compulsory) - Monday 28th November – Friday 2nd December Week 9 Senior School & interview preparation - All pupils to attend Monday 5th December All My Own Work / Resume preparation Tuesday 6th December Police presentation / Mental Health, Sexual Health and Drug Use presentations Wednesday 7th December Job Application / Interview Skills Thursday 8th December Year 10 Interviews & Presentation Day for Certificates (til lunch)

Parents please support this very valuable program to maximise your child’s experience during Year 10.

Work Experience - Students are reminded that their Work Experience needs to be finalised. Any students who have not organised this need to see Mr Horan if you require assistance. The dates for Work Experience are; First week (21st – 25th November), Second week (28th November – 2nd December). Parents please encourage your child to participate in this valuable program and complete your paperwork ASAP. Mr Horan - Careers Adviser

CAPA Report

CRANKY CUP THEATRESPORTS WINNERS 2016

On 26 October we began the day with a Theatresports workshop and ended the day with a Theatresports competition. In the morning, some of the younger students who are going to be the next drama students came and participated in and observed the workshop learning Theatresports games. We, the Year 10 Drama class consisting of Lucy, Jamie-Lee, Claire, Brodie, Kelli-Ann, Flynn, Oran, Georgia and, of course, Riley, organized and ran the workshops with lots of classes watching for the WHOLE of the Periods 1-4!

In the first workshop we started with some warm-up games. This got all students comfortable working with each other in the space. Firstly, we played “Captain’s coming”! In this game you have to listen to the instructions of the ‘host’ and do what they say quickly as a large group. For example, we say, “Scrub the deck!” and the whole group scrubs the deck. The last one to finish is out and becomes part of the audience.

The next game we played was “Knife and Fork.” In this game you get an instruction of how to walk around in the space. An example of this would be walking through a hot sandy desert. We then form into groups of 3 or 4 and form a shape such as a broken down VW. This helps all the group get to know each other and be happy to work together for the rest of the day.

We all did such a fantastic job of explaining Theatresports with such enthusiasm during the day we ended up getting four junior students so enthused about Drama they got up and participated as an extra team in the Competition. These inspired people were Llogan Greenup-Stokes, Travis Hayden, Isaac Jones, Dane Saunders and Lanita Jarrett!

The night started with pizza and garlic bread and we mingled with students from the other schools. We didn’t know each other that well until we started playing games including “Evolution of a Chicken” .

At the evening competition between NHHS, Orara High School and Toormina High School we played some spectacular games and showed that Nambucca still has the Magic “IT”!!! After gradually knocking out all the other teams, our team, “Destiny’s Other Children”, was the last group standing.

In the competition we all played games like “Death in A Minute,” “Slow Motion Commentary” and “Emotional Replay.” We watched some great comedy from all of the participating schools. We all laughed all day and night, especially at our winning Nambucca team. Max Galo was the fantastic compere for the night and the Drama teachers from the schools were the judges. A big THANK YOU to Luke Sheppard and Ethan Moller for the great lighting during the day and evening.

The excitement of the day and night reminded us all how much we love Theatresports! We are so proud we won (just like back in 2013)! Drama will live on at NHHS! Congratulations to all involved. Thanks to Mrs McSkimming, Mr Janssen and Miss

Campbell for their involvement. We woooon!!! Again!!! We are the comedians of the district! YEAR 10 DRAMA

Miimiga

Last Friday 28th October, Gus the Bus took a large group of students from all Years to the musical, Miimiga, in Coffs Harbour. We would like to congratulate Jetty High on another inspiring performance.

Miimiga is the new musical by Garlambirla Youth Theatre continuing their project of interpreting the cross-cultural history of Coffs Harbour.

Miimiga has three storylines which all relate to the concept of Mother, whether as Mother Earth, Mother Ocean or giving birth. Miimiga had a gentle, mystical feeling which surprised and moved us as an audience.

We thank Coffs Harbour High School, Mr Janssen and Miss Campbell for taking us, Mrs Fogarty for driving the bus and Mrs McSkimming for organizing the excursion. Most importantly, we also thank the Gumbaynggirr Elders for their support and guidance in this project. It gave us an amazing new understanding of our local history.
