Jordan bikes to and from school. He goes to school 42 weeks in a year. Each week he bikes 28 miles. Jordan used multiplication to figure out how many miles he bikes in a year. Abby thought Jordan was incorrect. Here’s her thinking:
42 weeks is about 40 weeks. 28 miles is almost 30 miles. 40 * 30 = 1,200 miles 1) What does Abby’s estimate tell you about Jordan’s answer?

*ANSWER KEY*
Possible answer: Alejandro added the denominators,
which is not correct. He should have changed b to e and
then added the numerators. The correct answer is +
= . Alejandro should have noticed that his answer is
less than half, and one of the addends is half. Therefore
the sum must be more than a half hour.

Possible answer (See Teacher’s Guide for similar example):
Jordan’s answer is not close to Abby’s estimate, so that
tells me Jordan’s answer should be close to 1,200 miles.
2) Is Jordan’s answer correct? If not, circle any significant errors and tell him how to correct his work.

Unit 5 Open Response Review (continued) *ANSWER KEY*
Possible answer (See Teacher’s Guide for similar example):
Jordan’s answer is not correct. He made a place-value
error when multiplying the partial products. Instead of
multiplying 2 * 2, Jordan should have multiplied 20 * 2
because the value of the 2 in 28 is 20, not 2. He would’ve
gotten 40. as the partial product Also, instead of
multiplying 2 * 40, Jordan should have multiplied 20 * 40,
which is 800. If Jordan added the correct partial
products, 320 + 16 + 40 * 800, he would have gotten 1,176 as
the product. This product is much closer to Sofia’s
estimate, 1,200.

320 40 * 8
16 2 * 8
4 2 * 2
