Principal’s Report

LAST DAY OF TERM ONE IS FRIDAY 5TH APRIL SCHOOL FINISHES AT 2.30PM

SCHOOL RESUMES ON TUESDAY 23RD APRIL

PLEASE NOTE THAT THURSDAY 25TH APRIL IS ANZAC DAY—NO SUBWAY THIS WEEK

CURRICULUM DAY—WEDNESDAY 1ST MAY—STUDENT FREE DAY

It is difficult to believe that we are already at the end of our first term. We have had a great start to the year with many highlights and successes. Our staff have been busy embedding Multi-Sensory Structured Language programs into their curriculum with much new learning for all of us throughout the term. Please ask your children about their spelling mastery reviews and knowledge of spelling patterns and sounds. Please also check your CONNECT each fortnight to keep up to date with what is happening across the curriculum for your child’s year level. Our staff and students have also been busy focussing on School-Wide Positive Behaviours. Every classroom now has consistent expectations for positive behaviours that should be practised around the school. We have a team of teachers who are coordinating this work for the whole school and I am very proud of how much they have achieved in a short time. We would love to share this work with our parent community so please look out for upcoming dates next term. You may have noticed that Mrs Bradley has not been at school this week. She unfortunately took ill on Monday and has been in hospital. We are very relieved that she is on the mend and will be home in the next day or so. Cherie was happy for me to let you know that she has been unwell however it is important that we respect her privacy relating to her health. I have been passing on well-wishes from our community and she is very grateful for everyone’s kind thoughts and best wishes. She has left big shoes to fill in her absence and we will be very glad to have her back when she is better. Work has finished with our grassed area outside the Grade 3 and 5 building it looks amazing and the students have definitely enjoyed sitting on the grass and playing at the tables—our next project is the basketball court which is also being laid with synthetic grass over the school holidays.

Congratulations

News from the School Nurse

Students Absences

Skye Primary School is a NUT AWARE SCHOOL, we aim to create the safest environment for your children

whilst at school, this includes children with severe food allergies.

Severe food allergies or what is known as Anaphylaxis can be life threatening. We have several children amongst different grades who if they come into contact with certain foods or ingest them could become very ill or worse.

Please help us as a community to educate the children about food allergies and anaphylaxis, wherever possible please don’t send whole nuts to school (peanut butter, Nutella, nut bars, nuts to snack on etc). We cannot ban nuts at school or within public places that is impossible, we can however teach our kids good handwashing with soap and water before and after they eat food, use the toilet, sneeze etc, we can teach them that disposing of their food wrappers into either the bins outside, in their classroom or taking their rubbish home helps to keep the area clean and safe for other students, when using the kitchen garden areas, strict food hygiene standards are followed with cleaning up the areas and sanitising crockery and cutlery and we always teach explicitly no food sharing.

We all understand that some children are really fussy and will only eat certain foods too, just please be aware that your child may be asked to eat in a different area so not to contaminate the classroom if they share it with a child who is at high risk of anaphylaxis.

Any questions please contact me

Kind regards,

Belinda Schodde

School Nurse

Please remember it is your responsibility to contact us to provide an explanation for your child’s absence from school, and where possible please inform us in advance of upcoming

absences. Protecting the safety and well-being of children through the reporting and moni-toring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parent/carers and schools.

You can notify the school the following ways –

* Phone the absence line – 9786 1555 press 1 – please leave your child’s name and grade and the reason they are absent

* Sentral – log on to Sentral. Click on Absences to record your child’s absence and the

reason they are away.

* Reply to the SMS you receive immediately with the reason that your child is absent

* If you going on holidays or know that your child will be absent write a note to the teacher or notify the office prior to the absence.

Congratulations to Mackenzie Zach who represented Skye Primary at the Regional Swim Meet last week—Mackenzie achieved two personal bests and a third in the 50 metre Breaststroke.

Kitchen Garden

It has been a wonderful first semester of the Kitchen Garden program. I have heard many stories from

students, parents/carers and staff about how the students are cooking the meals they created in their Kitchen

Garden class at home. I have also heard many fabulous stories of students enjoying their time gardening at

home or at relatives.

During weeks 7 and 8 the students enjoyed making pizza of the imagination and seasonal garden salad. Fresh

tomatoes, rosemary, capsicums, parsley, beetroot, chives, oregano and mint were harvested to create their

delicious meals. The students smelt the aromas of bread making and learnt about the science involved. The

star of last week goes to Mr Harrison who used his expertise in hospitality and cooked up a storm in the

kitchen.

The students have also been busy out in the garden harvesting produce, watering, constructing the bath

wicking beds and planting seeds. It is wonderful to see that many of the seeds have sprouted.

I would like to thank again the wonderful volunteers that have assisted in the kitchen. The students and I are

very thankful to them for giving up their valuable time. To successfully run this wonderful program we rely on

many volunteers. If you are able to assist or would like to find out more about our Kitchen Garden program

and how you can help please leave your details
