Soon we will celebrate Presidents’ Day, which once upon a time was two different holidays, Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday. I’ve never been clear if the new, combined holiday is meant to honor all presidents, or still just those two.

Jewish holidays are generally not about people, but rather about events or religious moments. (This is in contrast with, for example, the Roman Catholic Church, in which every saint has a particular day on which they are celebrated.) There are however, a few exceptions.

The newest Jewish holiday honoring an individual is not religious but rather Zionist – Herzl Day, celebrated on 10 Iyar (usually falling in May), which is Theodore Herzl’s birthday. Established by the Knesset in 2004, this is the holiday most parallel to President’s Day, celebrating the birth of one of the most important secular leaders the Jewish people have ever had. But, if you live outside the land of Israel, it’s a day you probably don’t know about.

The other two Jewish holidays I can think of that are connected to people are not celebra-tions at all; they are fasts (actually, partial fasts, meaning we don’t eat from sunrise to sundown). The Fast of Gedaliah falls the day after Rosh Hashanah, and commemorates the assassination of the Babylonian-appointed governor responsible for the Jewish population remaining in Judea after the destruction of the Temple in 586 B.C.E. It seems he was killed for being a collaborator. It seems our fast on this day is in sorrow for the hatred that would cause one Jew to kill another.

The second is the Fast of Esther, the day before Purim. Queen Esther asked Mordecai and the Jewish people to fast and to pray as she prepared to approach the King and tell him that she was a Jew. This fast is both to honor her bravery, and to heighten the joy we will feel that evening as we celebrate our salvation from the hands of Haman.

What strikes me most strongly about these two fast-days is the values that they are intended to highlight. They are not days off from work, nor excuses for a shopping spree. These two days, named for two Jews who lived long ago, still teach us lessons about living our lives. And that is something to celebrate.

Westchester is filled with amazing possibilities and programs – you just need to know where to look. TBA is filled with amazing people doing fantastic things and sometimes we have the opportunity to connect our amazing people with these fantastic programs. So when I heard about Mekorock it was a pleasure to connect Bella Greenspoon with this program.

According to their website:

The Shames JCC invited applications from students across Westchester County (and beyond!) to participate in a new program connecting teen musicians from around the world. This experiential learning program will give students the opportunity to com-pose original music based on Jewish texts, rehearse with like-minded teens, develop leadership skills, and perform in a global music program in Israel in December, 2019.

Bella was accepted into the program and it has been amazing to hear about her journey with the other participants at the JCC and about her trip to Israel. Here’s what Bella had to say about her experience:

A few weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity of going to Israel with Mekorock. Mekorock is an incredible program that allows Jewish teens from Ukraine, Moldova, New York, and Israel to play music together, and meet each other in Israel at the end of the year. Throughout the past year, I had the chance to work with an unbelievable group of teens from New York at the Shames JCC in Tarrytown each week. At these rehearsals, we learned a little bit of music theory, did some Jewish studies, wrote songs, practiced our instruments, and worked as a group to improve our band as a whole. I got very close with my bandmates as the year progressed and we became a real team.

In Israel, we rehearsed and wrote music with the teens from all the other countries. Because the trip was only seven days long, we didn’t have much time for tourism because of all of our rehearsals. But, we did get the chance to go to the Western Wall, explore Jerusalem, go shopping in the Shuk (kind of like a giant farmers’ market), and spend time in Tel Aviv. Although we didn’t get to do a lot of “touristy” things, spending time with our new friends was just as much fun as seeing sights. At the end of the trip, we performed together. Each country performed their own song, and we performed a song as a group. After the performance, we had to say goodbye to our new friends. Now that I am home, I am still extremely close with the New Yorkers, and I have continued to talk with my friends from around the world. Going to Israel was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am so glad I got the chance to go on this extraordinary trip. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Peter, Paul and Mary had it right when they wrote: Music speaks louder than words, it’s the only thing that the whole world listens to. Music speaks louder than words, when you sing, people understand. Music is a powerful tool that unites us all. Bella shared with me that not all of the participants spoke English and yet they could communicate through their shared love of music and of course Judaism. As well, thanks to modern technology, she is able to stay in touch with the people that she met from around the world.

I am always on the lookout for these kinds of opportunities to connect our congregants with interesting programs. If there is a program that you, or your child, would like to participate in and you need some help connecting, don’t be shy. We are here to help. L’shalom, Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

February is Jewish disability and inclusion month. According to ReformJudism.org we should be engaging in JDAIM on an ongoing basis. Remember that we can all become better allies and advocates for people with disabilities. Be sure to ask those with disabilities the way they want to be addressed and identified. All of us, regardless of our situation, can contribute to congregational life in meaningful ways. According to Shelly Christensen, “What is Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month?” By participating in Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month, we:

• Raise awareness of how people with disabilities and mental health conditions have been regarded by Jewish and secular society and how that impacts our own actions.

• Underscore the importance of choosing one’s own Jewish journey.

• Encourage Jews around the world to become genuinely empathetic and welcoming toward people with disabilities and mental health conditions.

• Urge Jews to welcome people with disabilities and mental health conditions into their communities and personal lives.

• Include people with disabilities and mental health conditions in all aspects of communal life.

• Advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and mental health conditions.

• Support people with disabilities and mental health conditions to make their own decisions about how they want to belong to their Jewish community.

It is a long journey which is far from over. Things are very different today and we have come a long way since the early days of congregational schools back in the 1950’s. We are moving away from any stigma attached to being Jewish and having a disability. We went from not knowing how to create inclusive spaces to slowly figuring out how to be equal on a path to being equitable. We went from the inaccessibility of no ramps for those who could not walk to ramps that open our spaces to all; from bathroom stalls too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair to ones that are wide enough; from the inability of those to hear voices from the Bimah to specialized hearing aids that block background noise and focus on the voices from the Bimah. We now understand that not all people learn the same way; that because you have difficulty reading or processing or keeping your body still does not mean you are somehow mentally or physically diminished.

However, we are not there yet. We have not reached equity and the ability to include those still on the fringes and create an even more inclusive space. Yes, in many respects equality is being reached, but that assumes everyone needs the same support, everyone is being treated equally. As we know in education, this is not the case. Learners learn differently. An approach that works for one individual does not necessarily work for another. We must strive to reach equity – to provide different types of support so that all learners have equal access. In the case of the religious school this means equal access to Jewish education.

We have exhibited hundreds of heirlooms, we have told many stories, we have enthralled many visitors. At Temple Beth Abraham we are having conversations on an ongoing basis as to how we can improve our educational environment for all learners and providing improved support for all of our learners’ families. Shortly, we will be partnering with Matan to take a look at the religious school from a holistic point of view. The mission of Matan is to educate “Jewish leaders, educators and communities, empowering them to create learning environments supportive of children with special needs, through

training Institutes and consultations.” In terms of assessing our needs, Matan will work with us and our experts to understand the inner workings of our school, community, and priorities. They will accomplish this by observing our children, classes and staff and then provide us with a report of recommen-dations to support inclusion in formal and informal educational programs as a whole. The Matan staff will maintain communication with our community until our goals are set and “next steps” are in place.

Yes, we do many things well. However, we can always improve and sometimes it takes an outside perspective to take a step back and look at things in a new way. I am personally very excited for this opportunity to take a deep, hard look at our approach to Jewish education, our ability to transmit our knowledge, how our learners are receiving that knowledge, and how our families are supported by us. Our ultimate goal, in the words of Matan, is to “realize the gift of every individual and fulfill its obligation to embrace all children regardless of learning challenges in every Jewish educational setting.” You can read more about Matan at matankids.org/.

• Donate to the Religious School Fund. The Religious School Fund helps support improvement efforts within the school.

• Take part in an educational task force. A task force is a wonderful way to share your voice on a specific subject matter with a shorter time commitment.

• Come to a Board of Education meeting. We always want to hear voices which reflect the needs of our children.

A lot of fun and excitement is coming-up in the Religious School. The month of Adar is right around the corner. That means Purim! Adar is traditionally a month of joy. As we enter the second half of the Religious School year, I’ve been reflecting on our learners and how connected and engaged they have been over the past few months at Temple Beth Abraham. Here, we are working hard to ensure that our youth feel welcome, loved, and safe.

Last year, we introduced ZEETYteeny, a youth group for 3rd-5th graders. It began tentatively, with some success, and our numbers continue to grow. In January, we introduced ZEETYKatan for our kindergarteners-2nd graders. Some of our littlest learners joined in on the fun, and are beginning to create their own connections to their peers, to their Temple community, and to Judaism.

We are growing from the roots. From the first moments our youth begin to experience their own Jewish journeys, we are now able to guide them in new, fun, and exciting ways. Ways that complement their religious school paths which also help keep them engaged and interested in remaining active at Temple Beth Abraham.

As we move towards Tu’Bishvat, this journey and theme will become even more apparent. We need to plant the seeds of love for Judaism and help our learners grow in ways that cultivate forests of passionate and proud Jews.

This is my wish for our learners, our TBA community, and for Judaism.

Through the generosity of the UJA Federation of New York and their Partners in Caring (PIC) grant, Temple Beth Abraham is able to offer free mental health services to our members and employees.

Our PIC social worker is Jennifer Convissor, LCSW. Jennifer has extensive experience offering counseling to individuals of every age, and with providing supportive referrals and facilitating groups for all ages, from preschoolers to senior citizens. She is available to meet the mental health needs of our members and employees from her office at the Shames JCC in Tarrytown.

The PIC grant allows for up to three confidential sessions free of cost and unlimited referrals. Please also consider reaching out to Jennifer to help develop therapeutic groups of any kind, including psycho-educational, wellness, or specific lifestyle-related support groups.

Westchester Jewish Film FestivalThe 2020 Westchester Jewish Film Festival will be held at the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) in Pleasantville from March 24 – April 7. Our synagogue is proud to possess

the Eytz Chaim, our “Tree of Life”.

This original sculpture by the noted

synagogue artist, Sanford Werfel, is

permanently displayed in the Temple

Beth Abraham lobby. The branches of

the tree contain leaves which can be inscribed to highlight

or commemorate such joyous events as births, weddings,

anniversaries, bar and bat mitzvahs, graduations or simply

to honor parents, family or friends. Share your happy

occasions by inscribing your family “Simchas” on our

synagogue’s “Tree of Life”. This will be a permanent

dedication to the meaningful, and happy events that

touch our lives. The price per leaf is $360.00 for members

and $450.00 for non-members. For more information,
