Term 6 Week 6 Daily Learning for Year 1
Week 6 of term and this week we are basing our learning on the book ‘The
Scarecrow’s Wedding’ by Julia Donaldson. This book is all about being a good
person and the what we should look for in friends – character strengths that make us
great friends too.
There is no film of this book! I hope we get another Julia Donaldson book on the
television this Christmas… if we do I wonder which one it will be? I chose this book to
work with this week as it is on a farm in the sunshine – as I look out of my window it is
raining! Maybe next week the weather will improve!
Mrs Rylands has read this book and you can watch it here:
https://youtu.be/4jEMPf55jmI
This pack contains a weekly over view followed by a breakdown of the daily tasks.
All resources for the week are at the end of the document for printing.

As there is no film of the
book please watch Mrs
Rylands reading the story to
begin your morning. Today
we are going to begin by
planning a party to
celebrate the Scarecrow’s
wedding! Think about
Measures – Scavenger Hunt
This week we are learning
about measures. We begin
with non standard measure
and then move onto using
scales on a ruler or a
weighing scale.
Today we will begin with a
scavenger hunt that gives the
children an opportunity to
explore measure and talk
about ways of measuring.
Senses
This week we are learning
about our senses. We have 5
different senses and use
these all the time to
understand the world around
us.
Do you know what your 5
senses are? Which part of our
body is used for each of our 5
senses?
Tue

Today we are reading and
thinking about some plants –
which could grow on the
farm. Please read the text
and have a go at answering
the questions. We haven’t
done comprehension for a
while – don’t forget that you
can underline sections of the
text to copy for your answers
if that is helpful.
Measures - weight
Today we will use a non
standard measure such as a
tin of food to make
comparisons about the
weights of different objects in
the home. The children will
need to use one object and
compare the weight with a
variety of other objects, after
estimating if it will be heavier.
Geography
We have travelled far and
wide in our Geography and
we have looked at different
ways of travel. Today I would
like you make a map of a
walk that you do regularly or
of walk to get to somewhere
you like to go. It may be to
the park / to a relative / to
school. What features do you
see on the way? Can you
include them in your map?

If you were to create your
own outfit as the Scarecrow
did, what would you wear
and what would it be made
of? She had a dress of
feathers – could you have a
suit of metal? Could you use
leather to kit yourself out?
Could you choose some
beautiful material to design
an outfit?
Measures - weight
Standard units – looking again
at weight we are going to do
some baking today so that we
use standard units to measure
with. Please follow the recipe
to make the cakes, discussing
the weights and ensuring that
the children have the
opportunity to measure the
amounts.
Outdoor learning
As the scarecrow are scaring
all of the birds away from the
farm and the crops they need
to be fed elsewhere! Can you
make this bird feeder to hang
up and feed the birds with?

The snail took so long to help
the Scarecrow find the pink
flowers that his lady love
thought he had left her! Can
you invent a machine to
speed up his journey? How
would it move? How would
the snail operate it? Can he
carry passengers in his
vehicle? Please use labels
and captions to explain your
design.
Measures – Length
Today we are moving on from
weight to length. We will begin
again with non standard
measures. Please draw
around your hand and cut it
out. Use this to measure the
height of all of the people in
your house – how many hands
tall are you / your family?
Who is the tallest/ Who is the
shortest?
Computing
This week our computing task
is all about QR codes – what
does QR mean? How can we
use them? Have a go at the
challenge using the QR
codes!
Fri
As the Scarecrows get
married they would like a
song to sing about their
journey. Can you use a well
known tune such as 3 blind
mice / wheels on the bus to
create your own wedding
song? It could begin 2
scarecrows, 2 scarecrows,
they want to wed, they want
to wed…. (3 blind mice
tune!)
Measures – Length
Today we are moving onto
standard measure using
length. Please use a ruler
carefully to measure the size
of the different chocolate bars
and then make comparisons
between them based on size.
Make sure that the ruler is in
the correct position to
measure accurately.

Phonics Challenge – This week we will be focusing on silent letters in words. Today
we are starting with ‘gn’ for the /n/ sound. Have a go at the challenge in the
resources section.
Writing task – This week our writing is focusing on the text ‘The Scarecrows Wedding
by Julia Donaldson, the illustrator is Axel Sheffler. This story has not been made into
an animation yet so unfortunately we can not watch it but Mrs Rylands has read it for
you if you follow this link:
This is a less well known story so that while we enjoy all of our old favourites we are
learning about new books too!
Today, after hearing the book, please can you
design a party to celebrate the wedding of the
Scarecrows. Use the headings to think about the
different elements of the party – What do you like
to play at a party? Or eat at a party? Where will
the party be and who will you invite? Think about
a party you have had in the past and enjoyed.

Maths Task – Measures – Scavenger Hunt
This week we are learning about measures. We begin with non standard measure
and then move onto using scales on a ruler or a weighing scale.
Today we will begin with a scavenger hunt that gives the children an opportunity to
explore measure and talk about ways of measuring. Look carefully at the language
in the scavenger hunt and encourage the children to use this language as they talk
about the objects that they find. Some of the terms, such as hand span, may need
explaining.

Science
Today we are thinking about our 5 senses. Do you know what your 5 senses are?
Can you tell a grown up what you 5 senses are for?
We all have 5 senses and they help us to make sense of the word around us each
day. We are thinking today about the different senses that we have and things that
we can see, hear, taste, feel and smell. Have a go at drawing something for each –
can you hear the birds outside or some one talking? What about smelling? Is there a
smell that you like? What about a taste?
What do you see out of your windows? You
can touch lots of things – what do they feel
like?

Phonics Challenge – Today we are thinking about silent ‘w’ - often at the beginning
of words. Today it is paired with ‘h’ in a variety of words.
Writing task – Comprehension
Today we are reading and thinking about some plants which could grow on the
farm. Please read the text and have a go at answering the questions. We haven’t
done comprehension for a while – don’t forget that you can underline sections of the
text to copy for your answers if that is helpful. See if you can see the different
digraphs and trigraphs that we know in the text as you read.
Once you have answered the questions see if you can write a question for your
grown up to answer based on what you have read.

Mental Maths Challenge – Can you have a go at some multiplication today? Use
the challenge sheet below to recap your multiplication skills!
Maths Task – Measures – weight
Today we will use a non standard measure such as some Lego brings or wooden
bricks to make comparisons about the weights of different objects in your home. The
children will need to estimate how bricks each object might weigh and then put the
object in one hand and the bricks in the other until they are approximately the
same. If you have weighing scales you could
weigh both to check! The idea of this activity is
to show children that non standard units are
less useful than standard units as it is more
tricky to be accurate so if you find this activity
is inaccurate you are having success!

Mental Maths Challenge – Today we are counting in 10s – have a go at completing
the counting in 10s as high as you can go - it is over 100! Can you remember what
happens when we go over 100?
Maths Task – Measures – Length
Today we are moving onto standard measure using length. We need to be able to
measure accurately for lots of reasons and so we use centimetres and meters. What
might we measure in centimetres? When would be use meters instead?
Please use a ruler carefully to measure the size of the different chocolate bars and
then make comparisons between them based on size. Make sure that the ruler is in
the correct position to measure accurately. You need to be sure that you begin on
zero – for some rulers this is at the end of the ruler but for some it begins along the
ruler a little bit. This needs to be lined up carefully so that the measurement is
accurate.
I have done my best to retain the accurate sizes as these have been copied into our
planning so I apologise if they are not completely accurate and suggests that you
measure to nearest cms – Year 1 children usually measure to the nearest cm.
