Hello, to the BEST 5th Grade YET!

I am so proud of how hard you have been working! In this packet you have test preps

that are designed to help you work on the biggest “skill gaps” that I noticed from our recent

tests and quizzes. These are the skills that we need the MOST practice on to be successful so

that all of us can get PROFICIENT or ADVANCED on our OCCT: Summary (Sum), Theme (Th),

Genre (G), Sequence (Seq), Point of View (POV), and a few others.

The two things that I am looking for are that you met the CFS and scored a 70% or

higher.

Use all of the strategies that we have learned so far – UNRAVEL, graphic organizers

(SWBST and Theme), plug it in, sequencing with paragraph numbers, underlining evidence, etc.

Remember, this packet counts as a test grade so it is very important that you give your

absolute best effort! Call me if you have any questions. I will be having an optional packet

worktime on Tuesday, November 26th for all students who turned in a permission slip.

KIPP Love!Miss Heinen

Directions:

Follow your schedule… don’t do all your test preps in one day!

UNRAVEL all of your test preps.

Read your calendar assigned pages every day and write an inference post it note.

pg. 12 inf/DC InferenceMagpie’s decision to run away with Fox shows me that she is a fundamentally weak and selfish person who places her happiness above the needs of all others.

EvidenceWhen she is running with Dog and says to herself “This is nothing like flying.” A few moments later she says, to Fox, “I am ready.”

Explanation This shows that she is only focused on herself and making choices for her own benefit without thinking of her faithful friend Dog. Clearly, she is weak and selfish.

Butterfly Breezeby Tonya Becerra

Riding her bicycle toward her friend Maria's house, Fumi pedaled hard, all of her energy pumping into her legs. "How could I have messed up that test? I studied so hard and still, my mind went blank! I can't believe it," she thought aloud. Fumi frowned and shook her head from side to side. Then suddenly, she felt an unexpected rush of wind against her cheek. She pulled over to the side of the road, scared. "What was that?" she wondered to herself. Thinking maybe it was a tree branch or a leaf, Fumi looked up into the sky. That's when she saw it fluttering in the air above her. Fumi stood very still, watching every move the floating creature made. Fiery orange and bold black patterns peppered its back. "Wow!" Fumi sighed aloud. "Pretty amazing, no?" said Mr. Luna, Fumi's neighbor, who was outside watering his colorful flower garden. "They never cease to amaze me. That's a monarch—like a king," Mr. Luna said. "Really?" asked Fumi. "I've never really seen one so close before. It brushed up against my cheek a minute ago, but I didn't know what it was. It scared me." "Oh, don't worry, Fumi. There's nothing to be scared of," laughed Mr. Luna. "They're harmless and so beautiful. "When I was growing up in Mexico, we would always welcome the flight of the monarchs. They were like a beautiful breeze of orange and black. They would gather together and flock against the trees. There would be so many that we could not even see the bark of the trees." "That is amazing," said Fumi. She and Mr. Luna watched the monarch butterfly float away against the breeze. Then they saw a few more patches of orange and black in the sky. "Oh, there are its friends," pointed Mr. Luna. "It must be migration time." "Migration?" asked Fumi. "What does that mean, Mr. Luna?" Mr. Luna explained that some creatures have to move to different parts of the world at different times. "Many times, it's too cold or there's not enough food for them to live. They have to find a better place." Fumi brushed her fingers against her cheek, almost feeling the light touch of the butterfly's wings, and smiled. Somehow, her low test score did not seem so bad. The butterfly breeze had blown away her bad mood.

How the Dragon Was Tricked

Once upon a time, there lived a man who had two sons. The sons did not get along well together. The younger son was more handsome than his elder brother, who was very jealous of him. When they grew older, things became worse and worse. At last, one day as they were walking through the woods, the elder youth seized hold of the other, tied him to a tree, and went on his way hoping that the boy might starve to death. However, it happened that an old, humpbacked shepherd passed the tree with his flock. Seeing the prisoner, he stopped and said to him, "Tell me, my son, why are you tied to that tree?" "Because I was so crooked," answered the young man. "It has quite cured me, and now my back is as straight as can be." "I wish you would bind me to a tree," exclaimed the shepherd, "so that my back would get straight." "With all the pleasure in life," replied the youth. "If you will loosen these cords, I will tie you up with them as firmly as I can." This was soon done. Then the young man drove off the sheep, leaving their real shepherd to wish he had not been so foolish. Before he had gone very far, the young man met with a horse boy and a driver of oxen, and he persuaded them to turn with him and to seek adventures. By these tricks and many others, he soon became so celebrated that his fame reached the king's ears, and his majesty was filled with curiosity to see the man who had managed to outwit everybody. So he commanded his guards to capture the young man and bring him before him. When the young man stood before the king, the king spoke to him and said, "By your tricks and the pranks that you have played on other people, in the eye of the law, you must repay with your life. On one condition I will spare you, and that is if you will bring me the flying horse that belongs to the great dragon. Fail in this, and you shall be doomed." "If that is all," said the youth, "you shall soon have it."

The New Dressby Tirzah Tyler

1 Samantha gripped her father's hand tightly while she walked with him through a mercado one Saturday afternoon. This was the first time that she had visited such a place. Inside one large building, many different shops sold items from Mexico, including jewelry, blankets, and toys. The walkways between the shops were crowded with displays of candies and more toys.

2 "This place is amazing!" Samantha loudly proclaimed. "It's more colorful than the mall."

3 Her father nodded and adjusted the cowboy hat on his head. "Yep, I was a little boy when I first came to a mercado. I thought you would have fun here, too. Your mother wants me to buy you a new dress for your school's culture festival."

4 Samantha became worried and began to walk more slowly. "Dad, you've never bought me a dress before."

5 "That's all right. I'm just going to pay for it."

6 "Dad, I've never picked out my own dress before."

7 Samantha's father nodded and looked into her face with his clear blue eyes. "Honey, I know you'll find something beautiful here. The way I see it, you have a lifetime of shopping ahead of you. This is a great place for you to cut your teeth." The bushy hairs of his mustache covered his top lip while he grinned. "Just keep in mind that these shopkeepers are very serious about their trade."

8 Samantha wondered what her father meant until they found a dress shop. Her father said that the shop was managed just like the shops in Mexico. None of the dresses in the shop had price tags. Samantha picked out a blue dress that had red and yellow swirling flowers sewn into it.

9 "How much is this dress?" Samantha's father asked the shopkeeper.

10 The shopkeeper was a short man who had a very round belly. He was moving like a little squirrel scampering busily about the room, but now he stood up very straight. "$20," he replied.

11 "Will you take $10?" Samantha's father asked.

12 "No. $20," said the shopkeeper.

13 "$12," said Samantha's father.

I thought Mom would blow a fuse when she pulled into the parking space at the grocery store. Somebody had left a shopping cart right in the middle of the parking space. "Why do people do that?" she said in a disgusted voice. "Don't stress over it, Mom," I said. "I can move it." I moved the shopping cart to the cart corral. When I came back, Mom had already parked the car and was getting the shopping bags out of the trunk. "Thanks, Tasha," she said as she slammed the trunk. "Sometimes people are so rude." "It was no trouble, really," I said. "That isn't the point," she said. "It's a responsibility thing. Whoever brought the cart out of the store was responsible for it, including putting it up. When they didn't do that, somebody else had to. If everybody acted like that, the world would be a mess. There would be shopping carts everywhere." I could see that Mom was really wound up about abandoned carts, and I was hungry. "Come on, let's do our shopping," I said as I moved toward the door. After a few steps she stopped. "Here's why I think they do it: they think that the Golden Rule doesn't apply when nobody's looking. You only need to do the right thing if there are witnesses. Otherwise, just throw your cup on the ground or toss your paper towel on the floor instead of in the trash can. That's just the wrong attitude." She took a deep breath. "Okay, I'm done. Sorry you had to listen to my rant." "That's okay, Mom. I promise I will always be responsible for my shopping carts, even when I'm a little old lady." She laughed. "You better."

21. What lesson can be learned from this story?

a. People abandon grocery carts out of ignorance.

b. Being responsible makes the world work better.

One day he heard of a religious teacher who lived in a great palace far away. Excited, he made the journey to see about becoming his student. He was ushered into the teacher's quarters, which were beautiful. The teacher offered the merchant strong coffee and delicious sweets. As they ate and drank, beautiful girls danced for them. The merchant liked what he saw and felt he could follow this teacher. He asked what it would take to become his student. "Oh, you will have to give up all your riches and take a vow of poverty," replied the teacher. On a sunny day, an ant was searching for food and came across a cocoon that was about to change. At the end of the cocoon, the ant could see a tail moving. The movement attracted the ant who then saw that there was something alive and said, "I pity such a creature that has to live inside such a thing, while I can move freely about at my pleasure. If I want I can climb a tree, while you lie inside in a shell. You can only move a little bit of your tail!" The creature in the cocoon heard every word but said nothing. A few days later, the ant happened by the same place. It noticed the cocoon and inspected it. There was nothing inside. "I wonder what happened to the poor creature inside," the ant said. At that moment the ant felt a cool breeze as shade covered him. He looked up and saw a beautiful butterfly. "Who are you?" asked the ant. "Don't you recognize me?" said the butterfly. "I am the creature you pitied because I was locked inside the cocoon. You may boast of your ability to run freely, but I won't listen very long." With that, the butterfly flapped its wings and rose up until it caught a breath of wind and was soon out of the ant's sight.adapted from The Ant and the Chrysalis by Aesop

Sam Bellamy and Mary Hallett(A Cape Cod Legend)

17

Page 19: 4.files.edl.io  · Web viewWhen the young man stood before the king, the king spoke to him and said, "By your tricks and the pranks that you have played on other people, in the eye

Once there was a sailor known as Sam Bellamy who fell in love with a girl named Mary Hallett. They lived on Cape Cod, just east of Boston. As a poor sailor, Sam could not offer Mary a nice home or expensive things, but they loved each other very much. One day, Sam told Mary that he would go to sea and become a pirate. To be a pirate was risky and dangerous, and Sam would be an outlaw. He promised Mary he would return when he had enough gold. Then, he and Mary could be married and live in luxury. Mary was worried, but Sam was brave. He said he would be willing to take the risk. He swore that he would always return for Mary—no matter what. Sam went to sea and became a very successful pirate. He was a friend to Blackbeard and all the other pirates in the Caribbean. He captured a fortune in gold and a powerful warship called the Whydah Galley. His crew called him Black Sam because he had long black hair, not because he was mean. He was known for his kindness towards the crews of the ships he captured. Soon the day came when Sam had enough gold, and he set sail for Boston. Sadly, Sam's ship met a storm off the coast, and the waves drove it onto the rocks. Only two men survived, and it was said that Sam was not one of them. When Mary heard the news, she was heartbroken. She ate very little and roamed the coast alone for many years. Then, one night, she disappeared. The residents of Cape Cod tell this legend to this day. According to them, a dark stranger came to Mary's house the night she disappeared. He had long, black hair and rich, golden rings on his fingers. They say she was last heard laughing.

25. Which of the following sentences best represents the theme of the passage?

n. "She ate very little and roamed the alone coast for many years."

As she lay in great pain, she said, "... but, you promised... why?" He shrugged and said, sadly, "Because it is my Nature." Imagine if you can, the excitement that was caused by the birth of Paul Bunyan!

It took five giant storks, working overtime, to deliver him to his parents.

Paul's clothing was so large they had to use wagon wheels for buttons. They used a lumber wagon drawn by a team of oxen as a baby carriage. When he outgrew this his parents put him on a raft off the coast of Maine.

I began to shrink. It’s very weird when you morph into something tiny. One minute your head is like four feet above the floor. Then, suddenly, your head is only two feet above the floor. Then one foot. Six inches. Once inch. My hands began to split open. Two of my fingers grew out and became sharp claws. Two other fingers and my thumb blossomed open, splitting into thousands of tiny, sticky hairs. My legs were shriveling down and turning into fly legs. SPLOOT! Two new legs exploded from my chest, just at the bottom of where my ribs had been. The legs shot out of me like huge black worms. They grew daggerlike hairs and formed joints, and became hard as plastic. At last, I was done morphing. I was a fly
