Iqbal Masih When Iqbal Masih was four years old, his father sold him for 12 dollars to work as a slave. For the next six years Iqbal was chained in a carpet factory for fourteen hours a day, six days a week. Iqbal was small and weak. He was repeatedly beaten for disobedience and was given very little food. When he was ten, he escaped and went to school for the first time. He also started to campaign for basic human rights for children in his country, Pakistan. He became a hero of the anti-slavery movement and visited many countries, including the United States. Iqbal became very famous and his message was always the same: “The two hundred million enslaved children in the world are your responsibility!” Iqbal helped to liberate thousands of children but on Easter Sunday 1995, there was a tragedy. At the age of 12, he was shot and killed while riding his bicycle in his village of Muritke, in Pakistan. After his death, children in America were so shocked that they decided to collect money to build a school in his memory. They put messages on the internet, asking for the donations of 12 dollars, because Iqbal was 12 years old when he died, and because his father had sold him for 12 dollars.
