Frozen Delight by Mikah Wright

It’s finally March, and before you know it, the groundwill begin to thaw and warmer weather will start rolling

in. Although a true ice cream lover would appreciatethe delicious treat any time of year, that warm weather

certainly makes it more appealing to the rest of us.

Lately I have found myself on an ice cream binge; something I’m sure all of the ladies out there can understand. The other day I was eating frozen yogurt for the first time when I began to wonder; what is the difference between frozen yogurt and ice cream? Further, what are the differences between those two when compared to gelato? So, my quest for answers began. I visited three separate parlors in Ames, testing the relationship between frozen yogurt, gelato and ice cream. Though this taste-testing process proved to be cruel and torturous at times, I completed my research and have come up with some answers.

First on the list is traditional ice cream. For this test, I traveled to Cold Stone Creamery and sampled the Cheesecake Fantasy. Cold Stone is unique in that it makes its ice cream fresh at the store every single day. It is especially rich when compared to store-bought ice cream and a small amount can go a long way. Once a customer places an order, the ice cream and toppings are mixed together on a frozen granite stone. There are also hand-dipped waffle cones and bowls if a customer is looking for the ultimate Cold Stone experience. I thought the ice cream was very good, but it did get to be a little too rich towards the end.

Frozen DelightMy next stop was to Aspen Leaf to whip up my very own frozen yogurt creation. Frozen yogurt was first introduced to the United States in the 1970’s, almost 200 years after regular ice cream was created. Like ice cream, frozen yogurt is available in almost any flavor imaginable. Unlike its creamy contender, the yogurt actually makes it healthier. Yogurt has enzymes that help the body digest, making it easier for people who are lactose intolerant to consume and enjoy it. Frozen yogurt also has more protein than ice cream and less cream. Don’t let these benefits fool you though. This treat can pack on the pounds, especially if you add every candy and topping on the planet to your dish like I do.

My final stop is to Capanna Coffee and Gelato. Gelato, unlike regular ice cream, has a velvety texture and pure taste because it is not frozen in the same way that traditional ice cream is. It is a better selection because it contains less butterfat and no trans-fats. Similar to the other two competitors, gelato contains fresh ingredients. The one difference that I noticed right away, though, was the intense flavor that is packed into such a small serving. No need to top this creamy mixture off!

After three days and one very strong sugar high; my testing is complete. And the winner is…frozen yogurt! The reason why the frozen yogurt stood out to me was the simplicity of the yogurt itself and the fact that customers can put any type of toppings they want on it. It is the perfect “one-stop-shop” for anyone looking for a frozen treat. Don’t take my word for it, though! Go out and sample some on your own and try to pick a favorite. Enjoy!
