Cultural competence is an active and ongoing process ofself-reflection, learning, skill development, andadaptation, practicedindividually and collectively, that enables us to engage effectively aculturally diverse community and world.

Cultural competence allows us to recognize that our statements, convictions, and reactions are conditioned by the culture in which we

live. Cultural competence enables us to bring this knowledge to bearin our interactions so that we can participate respectfully andeffectivelyin our pluralistic University, state, country, and world.

    Prototyping:

A rudimentary working model. A proof of concept designedto get feedback.

    Metaphor

    http://communicationnation.blogspot.com/2011/02/connected-company.html

    1. Its designed to be controlled by a driver or

    operator.

    2. It needs to be maintained, and when it breaks down,

    you fix it.

    3. A machine pretty much works in the same way for

the life of the machine. Eventually, things change, or the

machine wears out, and you need to build or buy a

    new machine.

    1. Cant be controlled (and doesnt need to be) -

    its an ecosystem (decentralized)

    2. Strong identity

    3. Self-generative

The average life expectancy of a company in theS&P 500 has dropped precipitously, from 75 years(in 1937) to 15 years in a more recent study.

    Why?

A recent study looked at profit-per-employee at475 of the S&P 500, and the results wereastounding: As you triple the number ofemployees, their productivity drops by half

    Why?

    http://communicationnation.blogspot.com/2011/02/connected-company.html

The nature of a machine is to remain static, while

the nature of a company is to grow

    http://communicationnation.blogspot.com/2011/02/connected-company.html

As companies grow they invariably increase incomplexity, and as things get more complex theybecome more difficult to control. Companies arecollapsing under their own weight.
