“ ENCHANTING INDIA” Following an introduction to the geography of India and its four regions, Bindu Mallick will discuss the different states of the country and how they differ from one another: each state has its own language, customs and foods. She will touch on the different religions of the country, including the most auspicious Hindu ritual, the Ginga ceremony, numerous monuments, palaces and the enchanting Taj Mahal, one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. This program is presented in collaboration between the Senior Center and the Barrington Community School (BCS). Fee: $10.00 per adult/$5.00 senior citizen rate. Please call the Center at 247-1926 or BCS at 245-0432 to register. Refreshments will be served.
VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON
Friday, April 21st at 11:30 am
During volunteer appreciation month, the Barrington Senior Center thanks all its wonderful volunteers with a special free luncheon, dinner music by Rod Luther and entertainment. This year, the Providence Civic Orchestra of Seniors will be here to perform – a special treat! Up to 40 musicians, who range in age from 55 to 99, will play favorites, including music from the classics, “pop” favorites and patriotic sing-alongs – and might even do a polka number or two. The orchestra was founded in 1977 by Vito Saritelli, “to keep older musicians active and performing,” and makes 45 Friday appearances a year in senior centers, nursing homes and schools. The orchestra has been featured on national television as an example of what seniors can continue to accomplish in their later years.
Because of the size of the orchestra, space will be at a premium and seating in the dining room will be capped at 65 reservations. Volunteers, please reserve your space no later than Monday, April 10th. After that date we will accept reservations from anyone interested in participating in this event until we reach 65 or by noon on April 19th. Please call 401-247-1926 to reserve a seat!
In April, Ben Hanley, Digital Services/Reference Librarian at Barrington Public Library, in collaboration with the Senior Center, will be teaching the classes listed below. Registration for all classes is required and space is limited to six people per class. Register online at www.barringtonlibrary.org, in-person at the Library Reference Desk, or call 401-247-1920, ext. 2.

“ARBOR DAY SOIREE” Please join us as we recognize and celebrate this important holiday. Established in 1872 by Julius Sterling Morton, this special day was dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. We will plant our own tree (miniature conifer), which can serve as a lovely outdoor accent during warmer months and can be taken indoors in winter. Students will travel around the world, exploring the various celebrations honoring the tree. Finally, we will have our own soiree, enjoying birch beer and other refreshments as we remember Arbor Day. You won’t want to miss this! Please call the Center to reserve early. Please note: As fresh flowers or plants are purchased in advance, cancellations must be made 48 hours prior to the class.

2ND STORY THEATER
COMPUTER CLASSES
Sunday, April 23rd at 7:30 pm (Downstage)
“ART” Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning seriocomedy is a sophisticated study of the nature of friendship. One of Marc’s best friends, Serge, has bought a very expensive painting: all white, with white diagonal lines. As Marc and Serge argue about its value and the definition of “art,” another friend, Ivan, is pulled into the fray. Soon, the discussions become less theoretical and more personal, testing their friendship and the resiliency of their bonds. The cost per ticket is $12.00, a price well below the current preview ticket price of $20.00. We are able to offer this discounted price due to the generosity of the 2nd Story Theater and the Senior Center. Please note that tickets are limited to two per person and membership in the Barrington Senior Center is required. Please reserve tickets early!
The Senior Center is moving into the 21st Century! All seniors with e-mail addresses are invited to let us know if they wish to receive the newsletter through e-mail in the future. Sending via e-mail will enable you to get the newsletter faster and at the same time will save postage for the Center. Please consider this option!

In the last newsletter we reported how the Friends of the Barrington Senior Center (“Friends”) funded the re-cent renovation of the Fitness Room - only one of the many improvements the Friends have made to support the Senior Center and the seniors its serves. These improvements are funded partly with grant money but the Friends rely heavily on the generosity of individuals, who care about their neighbors. While the Friends have a major fund raising drive in November of each year, contributions are happily accepted at any time. Please make checks payable to “The Friends of the Barrington Senior Center.”
THANK YOU!
SUPPORT YOUR SENIOR CENTER
The Center is fortunate to have support from several organizations who bring enjoyment to our seniors and we want to take this opportunity to highlight their service and to express a sincere “thank you”!
Thanks to the members of the Hameho Garden Club, who bring beautiful arrangements of fresh flowers every week that brighten our space.
Thanks also to Brookdale East Bay for its contribution of coffee, a very important beverage around here. Brookdale’s generosity makes it possible to provide coffee without charge-much appreciated by all.
Orchard View Manor surprised with a gift package of Providence Bruins tickets and a beautiful blanket and fun mug, which we were able to raffle off in a free week-long raffle. Much fun was had by all.
ART AT THE CENTER
Beginning in March, the Center has started a new tradition, featuring local artists by exhibiting their work on
the walls of the Center. This month we are displaying beautiful art prints by Cynthia Ragona of Seagreen
Photography, images of landscapes, cityscapes and flowers. The new art has sparked interesting conversation
among the seniors and we thank Cynthia for making her art prints available!
