Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Perhaps you may recall that a bit more than a year ago our parish took the initiative to help the Yousafzai family--an

Afghan refugee family who lived just blocks away from our parish. Thanks to all those who stepped up and provided gracious help to the family of 6 people. They are now settled. The letter below from James Kinsella is to serve as the closure to our initiative and to inform the community that together we can make a difference.

Let us continue to strive our best to be Jesus’ hands and feet to the needy.

God bless,

Fr. Andrew Vu Nguyen =================================================

28 December 2017

Hello Fr. Nguyen

I trust that you are enjoying these last days of the Holiday Season for 2017. I am sure that busy pastors such as yourself do not merit much of a respite during these days of special liturgies and special needs within your parish and the Diocese. Hopefully, you will have some well-deserved rest next week.

You may recall that I introduced you and Holy Family Parish to the Yousafzai family about a year ago. Asylum refugees from Afghanistan, they lived within the footprint of your parish. You and your parish leadership agreed to profile the family’s situation and assist them in their transition to live in the United States. Prominent in response were several of your most thoughtful and engaging parishioners: Erin Malone, Jeanette and Gary Miskimon, Esther Rechenmacher, Rilene Simpson, and Terry Giorgetti. I may have overlooked others. They all contributed to the welfare of the family through scheduling doctor and dentist appointments and rides, food bank assistance, and diligent tutoring. They proved to show their love of their fellow men through their service to these needy and appreciative individuals.

As good fortune would have it, the family was able to identify sponsored, affordable housing in Morgan Hill (less rent with more bedrooms!) and moved there in May. The 5 younger boys continued their schooling in San Jose through the 2016 school year. The family now has few ties to their former San Jose “roots”, including transitioning most of their medical and dental services to the South County.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and that of your parish, for your continuing prayers, and for congratulations on a job well done! I thought that this letter today would provide a measure of “closure” for this important project which you had approved and promoted so effectively. Please feel welcome to share my fond regards with your parish leadership. Furthermore, please consider me a resource if your parish has similar needs to assist such alienated newcomers to transition to life in this new homeland.

Cordially, James Joseph Kinsella, Jr.

Please prayerfully consider giving to the ADA. We are aiming for 100% participa-tion of our parish families. If you are financially unable to pledge at this time, your gift of prayer would be greatly appreciated. Please fill out a form as well.

Ministry in the Mass

Flowers and Plants “Flower ministers” are a part of the art and environment team. They’re really not just flower ministers, but care-takers of all the plants, both inside and outside the church. Mimi Bini heads up this ministry, and is always looking for helping hands, especially those with green thumbs! The individuals in this ministry are called to beautify the parish by tending and caring for the living plants and flowers. Your commitment can be a one-time thing, or it can be ongoing every week. All you need for this ministry is a desire to make the church and the grounds more inviting to the people who worship here. Everyone, from children working alongside their parents to our oldest members, are invited to be part of this ministry. In addition, service hours are available to our school families.

If you’re interested in this ministry you can speak directly to Mimi Bini, or contact me.

Catholic Roadmap Sometimes when I tell people I vote for a candidate based on the issue of abortion, they ask me "But what about the death penalty? Why don't you vote on that?" Here's why: it's because of the numbers. From 1973 until now, there have been 1,000 executions in the US. In that same time period, there have been 50,000,000 abortions in the US. That's 50,000 abortions for every 1 execution. If the numbers were reversed, I would be praying outside execution chambers instead of abortion clinics.
