Dear Sailors and Guests – Welcome to Wonderful Copenhagen

It is a great honor on behalf of the Danish Knarr Association to welcome you to the 47th International Knarr Championship in Copenhagen. The event is held together with Royal Danish Yachtclub in the newly re-build Skovshoved Harbour.

We look forward to a fantastic week with friendly competition on the water and lots of social activities afterwards in the Knarr village. Our IKC chairman Ib Ussing Andersen and his team of volunteers have worked hard to give you all a good experience.

All boats are in top shape, many of them with new sails. Together with world class judge Christian Lerche it should guaranty fair and tough races on the water. We cross our fingers for good weather with lots of wind.

We would like to recognize our Regatta Partners and program advertisers, who have made it possible to offer skippers and crew members an exquisite level of hospitality. Free beer, wine and good food will be served after the races in the Knarr Village lounge, where we also will have our daily price giving ceremony.

The IKC is a premier sailing event with some of the World’s best amateur sailors. And the unique format with daily rotation of boats guaranties, that the best skip-per and crew after the 15 scheduled races is the right winner. Sponsors, spouses and other interested will have the opportunity to watch these intense races first hand on the water from our VIP boat.

Land Rover use their sponsorships as a showroom, showing how their Car Technology can be used in a technically difficult sport such as sailing. So it is not just a matter of getting a logo exposed - It is a tough bargain to get more individuals to drive Land Rover.

The message is fairly clear: “If you drive a Land Rover or sail a Knarr, you typically have a younger “mind set” than your birth certificate indicates.” Individuals who are dedicated to nature, experiences and, exquisite design.

Worldwide: Extreme Sailing SeriesRaces are based upon a thorough commercial concept, where sailing is made available to a broad level of sports enthusiasts without the sport losing its exclusivity. A global project with intensive media attention, unforgettable events, lots of excitement and not least a global communication plat-form. Land Rover is the global event - and the main sponsor. Danish SAP Extreme Sailing Team, with Jes Gram Hansen and Rasmus Køstner, participates for the fourth consecutive year in the race. They’re in the lead of the series.

At Nordic level: M32 SeriesHere we really have action with embossed stage sailing in the center of large Nordic ports, just like Extreme Sailing Series globally. The race form is the same as known from the Extreme Sailing Series, but even more lively and it certainly takes its crew. Danish Team Trifork participates with Jes Gram Hansen and Rasmus Køstner who recently won a 3rd place in Oslo.

In Denmark: International Knarr Championship (IKC)IKC is the common icon of the Knarr class, and the guiding star in all the worlds Knarr sailing. The parry ashore is great and continuous, after a long day on the water, and with the guarantee of sporty success. IKC2015 has already ensured the supreme best competition on the water ever. The 21 Knarr boats are trimmed, so that the speed difference is nearly non-existent, and the pursue is 15 races. North Sails is the sponsor of new sails on the boats where an update is needed.

When Land Rover enters into a sponsorship, they go all the way to provide the sailors and spectators an “WOW” expe-rience. Says Peter Böckel: “When we participate, we must provide the extras that makes it delicious. It is not until you reach the in the margins that sponsorship provides value. This is where many sponsorships “dry” out “.

All good stories have to have a happy endingAlso here. Peter Böckel became more and more inspired during the dialogue with Knarr club on IKC sponsorship. In fact, “love affair”, is probably the right word. In love with the Knarr and the design with the beautiful shape, along with the environment surrounding the class. Peter drives a Range Rover Sport himself, so there was really no other way for him than to purchase a Knarr. A new crew in the Knarr class, Peter Böckel as helmsman in OD 87, “So there was no other way “ was the end comment from the Nordic commercial director of Land Rover and Jaguar.

Land Rover is new as active sponsor of the Danish sailing, with their massive involvement in the Interna-tional Knarr Champion (IKC), which takes place from early August in Skovshoved. Peter Böckel (Nordic CCO - Chief Commercial Officer) – of the Land Rover / Jag-uar Group says it directly: “We are constantly seeking to position the brand - Land Rover, towards competi-tion-oriented individuals who seek the active life. Land Rover is a car you want, and the price is not essential. We sell dreams, and create the good story. “

A Land Rover brings you closer to nature, like you do when you sail a Knarr boat. It is the common DNA, because the sailing experience in a Knarr, is close to nature’s elements and there is just nothing as life creating.

Potential affluent customers in the Knarr classThe Knarr will never be - nor has it the ambition - to become a popular class for everyone. Land Rover will probably never get close to being an every man’s property. Prices start close to one million Danish Kroner and ends up beyond 3 million Danish Kroner. Although you might still be lacking a Knarr, you are telling a story about yourself with your hands on the

wheel of a Land Rover. You tell the world that you are suc-cessful and have the guts to show your success. In short, neither Knarr sailors nor owners of Land Rovers are people who succumb to the so always killing “Jante Law”.

Jante’s Law around the worldDenmark: Jante’s Law – refers to those who want to break out of their social groups and reach a higher position in society in general and the mentality that de-emphasizes individual effort and places all emphasis on the collective, while discouraging those who stand out as achievers. UK, Canada, Australia: Tall Poppy Syndrome – a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers. Phil-ippines: Crab Bucket Syndrome – based on the myth that if you have at least two crabs in a bucket, you don’t need to have a lid, because other(s) prevent any one member from trying to climb out of it. Japan: The nail that sticks up will be hammered down.

The Norwegian Erling L. Kristofersen designed the Knarr in 1943, but World War 2 had to come to an end before the construction got wind in their sails. The Knarr and Land Rover have in common that they last forever. The Knarr is a classic day cruiser and likewise a racing boat that fits per-fectly into families with an active career – perfect in relation with the Land Rover concept.

Land Rover is a classic British car manufacturer that solely produces 4-Wheel drives – SUVs. Owned today by Indian Tata Motors, who inject millions of pounds into continued development.

Born in the sandMaurice Wilkes, employed by Rover, drew his first ideas for the first Land Rover Defender in the sand for his brother Spencer at Warwick Beach. The first model was ready in 1947 to a design based on the jeep, but with PTO (Power Take Off) for operating equipment and tools on the farm.

British industry had a desperate need to export products after the Second World War. The first prototype had the driver’s seat in the middle enabling it to be exported to markets in both left- and right-hand traffic. But since the first tentative ideas on Warwick Beach, Land Rover and the Knarr have had water and the beach as common pointers for over 60 years.

INTERNATIONAL KNARR CHAMPIONSHIP

DEED OF TRUST1.The purpose of the International Knarr Championship is to provide a competition between friends united by their love of the Knarr. While it is a competition, all participants should enter the championships pledging to be the best sportsmen possible in their relations with each other and in the handling of the boats.

The Championship shall be held every year, alternating be-tween the USA, Denmark and Norway. The first Champion-ship will be held in the United States, at San Francisco, Cal-ifornia in 1969. In the event the German Knarr fleet achieves a one-design Knarr class with a sufficient number of boats to host the IKC, Germany shall be included into the rotation as a host country every fourth year, beginning in its first year of such eligibility following an IKC hosted by the USA. Following Germany’s first hosted IKC, the ordering of host countries will continue in its previously established sequence.

2.A. Eligibility

The host country shall decide the number of skippers with crew. The visiting countries shall each be granted a minimum of five berths for their skippers with crew. The host country may enter up to twice the number of skippers with crew as each of the visiting countries. In the IKC competition at least one member of each qualifying team has to be at least a 1/3 owner in the boat that the team sailed to qualify with. In the event of a bona fide charterer skippering in their entire IKC qualification series the ownership restriction may be waived by the Admiralty of the qualifying skippers country. If a co-skipper arrangement is in place for the qualification series, one skipper must be selected prior to the IKC and shall act as skipper for the duration of the IKC in question. The champion of the previous year shall also be invited to participate provided that he is a Knarr owner of at least 1/3 of a sailing Knarr at the time of the regatta. The ownership requirement may be waived by the Admiralty of the champi-on’s country. If the previous year’s champion does not sail in the regatta, the country of the defending champion shall be granted an additional berth in the regatta.

Beginning with the IKC in 2008, and every subsequent year until it achieves host country eligibility status as pro-vided in 1(a), Germany will be entitled to one entry in the Norwegian, USA and Danish hosted IKC’s, provided each of the following requirements has first been satisfied: (i) Ger-many establishes and maintains a one design Knarr class and association, accepting the Knarr International Class rules, and being recognized by the German racing authority; (ii) Germany’s established Knarr class association has an IKC qualifying series of at least 4 races with at least 5 boats com-peting for the entry in the upcoming IKC; and (iii) Germany’s established Knarr class association accepts and adopts the IKC Deed of Trust in its entirety. Should one German team enter the total number of IKC-contestants will increase with one berth.

B. NoticeThe visiting countries shall advise the host country of the

names of the skippers that they will send before 1st April in the regatta year. If a visiting country advises the host coun-try that they will not be filling their quota, then the host shall promptly offer any vacancies to the other visiting country. If there are still unfilled berths after making the offer to the visiting countries, then the said berths may be filled by skippers who raced in their own country’s elimination series. If a vacancy is not filled by a qualified visiting skipper, then it shall be filled by the highest qualifying skipper from the host country.

C. SelectionsEach country’s national Knarr-organization will decide the

system to be used in selecting their participants.

D. Professional competitorsNo professional sailor, as defined below, shall be permitted

to sail in an IKC as skipper or crew, unless that person has sailed in 75% of the IKC Qualifying races for that year.

If the defending champion has not sailed the qualification races of the defending year, the crew he brings along shall meet the requirements of the rule.

A professional sailor is defined according to the “ISAF Sailor Classification Code 3” being in force at the time of the IKC.

(The 2006 definition of “ISAF Sailor Classification Code 3” is:“A professional Competitor is one who during the last 24 month directly or indirectly:a) has been paid for: (i) competing in a race, (ii) training, practicing, tuning, testing, maintaining or otherwise preparing a boat, its crew, sails or equipment for racing, and then competed on that boat, or in a team competition, in a boat of the same team; or

b) has been paid €1,500 or more for allowing his or her name or likeness to be used in connection with his or her sailing performance, sail racing results or sailing reputation, for the advertising or promotion of any product or service; or

c) has publicly identified himself or herself as a Group 3 com-petitor or as professional racing sailor.”)

Responsibility of Skippers entering the IKC :“If the team includes a “professional competitor” as either skipper and/or crew, as defined under Rule 2D, a written de-tailed explanation of each person’s activities under 2D (1)-(4) must be provided latest at registration. For such individuals, the Admirals further request that the Skipper provide the dates of qualifying races these competitors crewed and/or skippered – 75% rule. This written response will be shared with the admirals of all three fleets for joint determination on eligibility.

The joint Admirals may at any time before and during the IKC, without any explanation, ask any skippers for a writ-ten detailed explanation of competitor qualification under 2D (1) –(4), and a list of the qualifying races the competitor participated in. The written response will be shared with the admirals of all three fleets for joint determination on eligibility and thereby penalty. “

3.A. Regatta Conditions

The Championship shall be decided by a regatta of four completed races and a maximum of 15 scheduled races. The host country shall determine the number of scheduled races to be sailed with the above limitations. There might be a tune-up race if the national Knarr association so decides. If six (6) races are completed, there will be one throw-out, if nine (9) races are completed, there will be two throw-outs and if thirteen (13) races are completed, there will be three throw-outs. The Championship shall last 6-8 days include a lay-day.

B. CoursesThe courses shall, if the racing area permits, be of the

“Knarr”-style. Port courses have preference. C. Committees

The host country will provide the required committees to conduct the regatta.

D. YachtsThe host country will make available the necessary num-

ber of yachts complete with sails. All participating yachts and sails must comply with the host countries national Knarr rules and regulations.

E. Draw of yachtsThe yachts will be drawn by lot for each scheduled day of

the regatta in an equitable manner.

F. Standing rigging and running riggingWith the exception of the backstay, tuning of the standing

rigging during the regatta will not be allowed.The boats must be raced in the condition provided by

the owner and the technical committee. Sheets, sheeting systems, cleats, barber hauls, battens etc. shall not be changed or modified by the competitors. Violation of this will be protested and reported and may result in disqualification from this race or the whole IKC series.

G. Substitution of yachts or sailsSubstitution of yachts and sails may not be made except

in an emergency.

H. Racing rulesRacing rules shall be the Rules of the International Sailing

Federation and the Sailing Instructions.

I. Crew LimitsThe crew number shall be no less than three and no more

than four, including the skipper.

The crew number and members must be the same in all races. No member of the crew shall be substituted unless a written permission is obtained from the Race Committee the day before the race, or in case of acute illness, as soon as possible.

J. BreakdownsA yacht, disabled through an accident, or failure of sup-

plied equipment, and through no fault of her crew, may re-quest special consideration from the Race Committee. Such yacht must make every effort to finish the race, provided that further damage to the yacht will not be incurred.

To request special consideration, the yacht must display a yellow flag conspicuously in her rigging at the first reasonable opportunity after the breakdown, and shall keep it displayed until acknowledged by the Race Committee. This is a change of RRS 60 + 62. The boat must file a written protest in accordance with RRS 60 after returning to harbor. K. Scoring

The scoring system shall be of the Low Point system type, except as modified by the paragraphs on breakdown which follows:

In the event of breakdown and when special consideration is requested, as described above in item J, the Protest Com-mittee may, at their sole discretion, at a hearing to take place at the conclusion of the race, take any one of the following actions. This is a change of RRS App A4.

1. Order the race to be re-sailed.2. Award such yacht a point or points as if it had been unim-paired.Await the completion of the series, and calculate the number of points according to section A and B. Award the yacht the average number of points of A and B.

3. A. The number of points resulting from adding together the number of points obtained by the skipper of the disabled yacht, in the other races of the regatta, and dividing that number by the number of other races which that skipper completed during the entire series, and for which breakdown points were not awarded.

B. The number of points resulting from adding together the points obtained by the disabled yacht in the other races of the regatta, regardless of who sailed it, and which were com-pleted by that yacht, and divide that number by the number of other races so completed by that yacht during the entire series, and for which breakdown points were not awarded. The points under this section shall be in accordance with the

actual finish position of the yacht and shall not reflect any disqualification of the skipper sailing the yacht at that time.

L. Protest committeeThe members of the protest committee shall be able and qualified people.The host country can provide a complete protest committee (minimum three members),

The visiting countries may appoint substituting or addi-tional members.

4.A. Trophy

The winner of the regatta shall be presented the Inter-national Knarr Championship Trophy supplied by the host country.

B. It shall be the responsibility of the winner to keep the tro-phy safe and insured for replacement value. He shall also be responsible for delivering the trophy in the next host country in time for the next Championship regatta.

5.A. Miscellaneous Provisions.

In the event the Knarr class expands to other countries, such countries shall have the right to compete for the Cham-pionship.

B. If the country next in line to hold the Championship de-clines to sponsor the event, the responsibility for sponsoring it shall pass to the next country in line.

C. Should the interest in the Knarr class winter, and no race be held for three consecutive years, the trophy shall become the property of the National Knarr Authority of the country whose representatives have won it the most times. If a tie exists, the trophy shall belong to that country, whose repre-sentative won it most recently.

6. Deed of Trust.Amendments or changes to this Deed of Trust may be

effected only by two-thirds vote of National Knarr Authorities, each authority casting one vote. In the event Germany be-comes eligible to host the IKC as provided in 1(a), changes to this Deed of Trust may be effected by a majority vote of the National Knarr Authorities, each casting one vote, begin-ning in the first year following an IKC hosted by Germany.

AT KNARR YOU ARE PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL NETWORKBy Nicolai Lassen

If you own a Knarr, you are automatically part of an inter-national social network. Not only do you own a boat, but a classic beautiful vessel. And as a matter of fact there are actually not very many of them. Geographically, it is also almost limited to three nations, the United States, Norway and Denmark, - there are also Knarr boats in Germany, but otherwise it is unknown.

Active Knarr sailors are concentrated at few locations. In the US, only in San Francisco. In Norway, only in Bergen and Oslo respectively, and in Denmark most boats are located in Oresund. In particular, many in Skovshoved Harbour with 35 boats, beautifully presented at the new Knarr promenade quay, which is the epicenter of the 47th International Knarr Championship (IKC).

This year’s week long international Knarr celebration starts on August 2nd with the opening reception and boat draw, and ends with a bang of a price giving party at the KDY restaurant “Address” in Tuborg Havn August 8th. The inter-vening period is used to achieve the objective: Executing “The best IKC in living memory - athletically and socially.”Everything is centered on the “Knarr village”, which is being established between the KDY and SKS pavilions in Skovshoved. 24/7 throughout the week, there will be bub-bling life which will inject much needed good spirits at the construction site – which at some point in the future, will be known as Skovshoved Harbour.

Many sailing clubs and not, least Dansk Sejlunion, could benefit from an inspirational trip to Skovshoved, where they could experience the atmosphere and the many happy sail-ors. The entire event has been launched, in close coopera-

tion with a wide circle of sponsors, driven by the enthusiasm of the great team behind this year’s IKC, and with support from their families. All of this means that the standard is so high that no one else in the Danish sailing can match it. With the former KDY director Christian Lerche in the lead, the Knarr class also has the best possible officials team. The sailors may not get all the 15 races, if the weather gods act as they usually do in early August, but 10 races should be sailed before Saturday, August 8th has become Sunday.The starting point is that the Danish Knarr association pro-vides 21-top tuned Knarr boats, and that the foreign sailors are being accommodated on private basis. Practically, this means that all participants need only to bring their sailing gear and well-padded credit cards - and then show up in Skovshoved.

The 21 Knarrs will be distributed among the three nations by lot, and each team must sail a different boat every day of the competition. Prior to this there have been trial races, with very tough competition for the much coveted slots. This means that Denmark will have 10 Knarr teams because Denmark is hosting the event this year. From Norway and the United States there are five teams from each nation. The last boat is automatically assigned to the winner from the previ-ous year, which this year is Lars Gottfredsen with his crew Jesper Kjer and Anders Fisker.

Many within Danish sailing had a hard time taking the level of competition in the Knarr class really serious. But a serious succession has taken place, and competition has intensified significantly. All sailors in the world, would fall short if they dared to run for championships in a Knarr. Maybe there are not many ropes to pull, but the Knarr is extremely hard to

handle for an optimal fast forward on the race course.The Knarr class has started a much needed reversing pro-cess. There are new winds coming up for a strengthened Knarr class - as the best alternative to new sailors aged 40 years plus. Those with careers, a demanding family life - and as a result, too little time. But the Knarr has all the qualities that make it a modern classic. “The Up - Down lanes” is the new sailing, which can handle 4 sharp races in just 5 hours.Competition on the water during the coming IKC will be fierce. It is partly because several international sailors have a sporty playtime and partly because you are sailing in bor-rowed boats. Every day has its challenges with today’s boat where lottery luck and the weather on the day mean a lot.It is probably going to be a Danish-American showdown where Jon and Phil Perkins from the USA, will challenge the Danes. Lars Godtfredsen will be up against strong sailors such as Anders Myralf, Henrik Søderlund and Ib Ussing. The classic local Knarr sailors such as Kim Bruhn-Petersen and Peter Bøttcher may well on a good day take points from the leaders in the field. But this year there will also be many new exciting well-known names that will strengthen competition significantly.

In Skovshoved sailing will exclusively take place in fiberglass boats with aluminum masts, but even so, there are good boats and some not so good boats - much of it is psychol-ogy. But this does not mean that “a not so good Knarr” equals a bad result. Because if the weather is just right on that day, these boats can actually be highly competitive in the hands of the right crew. Last day of the IKC in 2014, which was held in Bergen, Lars Gottfredsen was to sail the

“herring box of all herring boxes”, but Saturday was windy, and the crew raced the boat to a 2nd and 3rd place. They sailed well and had lottery luck, with the right boat for that day’s weather forecast.

It will be a good week, where some of sailing’s biggest egos and connoisseurs will meet in friendly competition, in the super hottie lounge of the Knarr village.

Knarr village, an institutionThere are two Danish terms that have gone around the world without being translated.

One is the Danish Parliamentary “Ombudsman”. He is independent and investigates complaints about the public administration. The “Ombudsman” may criticize and recommend to re-open a case and perhaps this may change their decision, but the Ombudsman can-not himself make decisions.

The other is “the Knarr village”, first time observed during the IKC In Skovshoved in 2012. The Knarr village is where the party is greatest, 24/7: Morning coffee, preparation of lunch, beer enjoyed from the pier and lots of parties. The village unites all Knarr lovers in the lounge area, opened together with the IKC and goes to sleep until the next IKC when the last sailor has returned home.

Søren Leopold can certainly show an impressive sailing career. At the age of 8 he started in Vedbæk Sejlklub in the Optimist Dinghy, became Danish cham-pion in the Danish iconic “Flipper Dinghy” in 1983, two Olympic campaigns in the 470 dinghy: 1984 in Los Angeles and 1988 in Seoul - though not reaching the top. He has sailed just about every model from Danish X-Yacht, but then the sailing stopped.

Slowly career and family filled the everyday life and pushed sailing out of the calendar. As a partner in Deloitte he did some company sailing, but it was absolutely not real sailing. The drought lasted nearly 25 years.

Today Søren, at the age of 49, is a partner in the network company CFO Consulting. One of the leading Nordic spe-

cialists in economics management, hence the company name CFO – chief financial officer.

The Knarr is a beloved childhood memory OD 22 was owned by Søren’s father Eric, who back in 70’ies raced the IKC with legendary Christian Rasmussen senior on board.

It was a series of incidents that OD 121, previously owned by another Danish legend Klaus Fossum, was purchased for the season. Firstly, the expansion of Skovshoved Harbour, which made it possible for Søren to buy a mooring - previously the waiting time was nearly 35-years.

Secondly: the good cooperation with his childhood friend Peter Bøttcher who pushed him by constantly telling tales from the seven seas in his 2 Knarrs. Besides that Klaus

Fossum had his Knarr for sale, it meant everything to Søren that it had proved to be a fast boat. Apart from that it was a “tired” Knarr, the functionality lags, and cosmetically there is clearly room for massive improvements. But exactly that became the crucial piece of the puzzle, “Because this I can do something about,” as Søren puts it enthusiastically. “I’m a handy man, relaxing with a tool in my hand. It evokes child-hood memories with the endless hours we worked on the Flipper dinghy and later the 470er “.

Although the list is endless, Søren still considers it a manage-able task. Perfect for a quiet moment, which gives inspiration to a tough daily life.

Søren is sailing with the family, his wife Anne-Marie and in turn the children Caroline aged 20 and Frederik aged 18. For the weekly Thursday evening races it fits perfectly, and if he lags a crewmember, friends of the family join in.

Although there is quite some sailing rust to be knocked after many years away from the sport, the proud skipper does not hesitate to tell that they became no. 2 out of 15 starting Knarrs last Thursday to the week’s evening match.

The concept, with two races and subsequent grill is brilliant for the family Leopold. “We have a good evening together, and others have taken care of dinner. And then the good company on the dock after the race creates an excellent community.“

In a busy life it means everything that the Knarr can be quickly rigged. Not like a Melges 24, where you must arrive two hours before the start, to get the ship launched and everything prepared.

Previously the Family Leopold has chartered 40-foot sail-boats on the Mediterranean, so boating is not unknown to the family. The Knarr must also become a future platform for leisure on Øresund, for the entire family. Søren would be happy to see his children take trips on Øresund with their friends. One afternoon it was so life affirming to watch the neighboring Knarr being sailed by a daughter and 3 girl-friends below 20 years. That is the way we can assist in revitalizing the sport of sailing again.

The Knarr Summer Regatta will not be in his calendar this year, but certainly a common activity one of the coming years. Perhaps mom and dad Leopold will be taken off the team, if the next generation takes over the helm and steer-ing. Who knows?

“Great spirits don’t enter the stage until the curtain goes” these wise words came from Ib Ussing An-dersen’s good friend and Knarr crewmember Otto Langhorn. Said one rainy Friday afternoon, when OD 111 is to be transferred to a weekend race in Sletten (North Zealand) And it is true that Ib Ussing Andersen through a long sailing career has established a leading international position that gives him the opportunity to choose boating on the highest levels, yet Ib still loves to sail his Knarr.

Saturday morning Ib has just landed from Sardinia after a weeklong job as captain on a 65 meter Dubois. An extreme sailing ship, with more crew members than the entire Knarr class can muster. Ib is still ready to sail IKC qualification race No.2 in Sletten, with his sailing friends through many years Jens Buhl Jørgensen and Otto Langhorn.

When he does not join the Dubois, Ib sails on a 44 meter Wally in charge of the strategy, and as “uncle” on a “small” 33 meter Wally. It is natural to ask: “What is the difference between managing a 65 meter Dubois and a Knarr? The

short answer is: “Nothing really, except that you have a much better boat feeling with a Knarr”.

Ib loves his Knarr, it is uncomplicated and affordable to sail. “I do not feel guilty about skipping an evenings match”, says the busy sailor, who must also find room for a round of golf with his wife.

“The Knarr class has the best and broadest competition in Denmark. You should be happy every time you have made it into the top 5. With the aluminium mast there is virtually no speed difference, so it is the best crew of the day that wins.” said by a man who’s entire life has been sailing.

His words were reconfirmed during the IKC qualification races in Sletten, where the final scores were equal between No. 2 No., 3 and no. 4. This tells you everything about the fierce competition in the Knarr class.

For Ib Ussing the new Knarr racing course format is refresh-ing, “Great with these up and down lanes where we get to sail up to eight races of an hour’s duration during a weekend.

“Nice to observe that a new generation is gradually taking over. I notice that many new and very talented sailors have joined the class. It is really fun. Knarr sailors have a very healthy and mature attitude to “professionals”, an open attitude reflecting that we can all learn from each other. “

“For the” professionals” it is likewise learning, because we must all from time to time face a good beating when we sail Knarr”. Ib was a sure winner in Sardinia, but had to settle with a 3rd (4th) place in Sletten – worthwhile considering. “

Sletten is special about the social arrangements, - Sunday had only two races and subsequently the big family lunch. It gives the Knarr class a good social life.

“The Knarr really is a nice boat, a god damn great ship”, Ib is full of joy, while he continues, “I am proud to own a Knarr, - the design is just great”.

Well Ib Ussing Andersen is not really new in the Knarr class, North Sails formerly owned OD93 as a company boat on the sail loft, but the family Ussing Andersen also extensively

used it privately. Back then Ib had small children who were introduced to life on the water. They came on board and felt quite comfortable with the deep cockpit.

The little “Ussing Andersens” have grown bigger, so Ib has reached the mature age, where more and more visits from grandchildren fill his calendar. Therefore, OD 111 “Anna” purchased when his first grandchild - Anna - announced her arrival.

Today, Anna is a great girl of 8 years, active optimist sailor in Hellerup Sailing Club. Along with the other grandchildren, now frequent crew member aboard during positioning trips to the races. In fact, the granbd old world skipper could well move away from the tiller, because Anna has taken over and she manages the Knarr with a steady hand. And this is very appropriate, because Ib is busy managing the planning of the IKC 2015 in Skovshoved, a cornucopia of experiences.

On May 2nd, 2015, Mr Hans Toft (mayor in Gentofte) proudly wrote on his Facebook profile:

“Skovshoved harbour: In bright sunshine we have to-day inaugurated the new harbour basin in Skovshoved, with 325 new moorings, making it a total of 645 moor-ings. A day of celebration together with many happy sailors and visitors. Thank you for a fantastic day, where we can enjoy that the first step of the extension of the new harbour has been completed.”

We have rounded a mark on the route to ensuring the best facilities for our citizens practising water sports. “Recrea-tion” is the key word in the sports and exercise policy of Gentofte. A large variety of options to actively participate in many different sports-, exercise-, and recreational activities, are essential conditions for a good and healthy life. Gentofte municipality has been awarded. Gentofte Municipality has also been named “Sport Municipality of the Year” and “Width Sports Municipality”.

The voluntary sport organizations are always present, and provide possibilities for all children and youngsters to try a new sport activity. Many young people join the sports clubs

subsequently. This for sure is one of the reasons Gentofte, as one of very few municipalities in Denmark, can maintain a high number of memberships in the sports organisations.Skovshoved harbour has been entirely rebuilt since 2010. The club facilities in the harbour have been extended to the benefit of more than 2000 members of the 5 different organisations. This extension and rebuilding has taken place in close liaison with the users of the harbour – including the many Knarr sailors, who have obtained the finest possible facilities.

It is not only the water sports, which enjoys the sports and exercise policy of Gentofte. A new tennis hall has been built, and the schools have as well got extended and new sports facilities. Earlier Mr. Hans Toft took the first sod for e new ice-hall at the sports park of Gentofte. In the coming years focus will be on improving facilities of the 3 smaller organisations, roller hockey, petanque, and hockey.

Among other things, a new roller skating rink has been build, the schools have been given new and enhanced sports facili-ties and earlier this summer the mayor Hans Toft opened a new Jägers Skater Park, and also modernization of Gentofte Sports Park will continue in the coming years. The work

continues, and in the coming years, among other things, the construction of a modern show and training hall and a new football stadium in Gentofte Sports Park will arise. The politi-cal objective is to create attractive and varied offers of sports and movement. Gentofte supports that all citizens have the option of choosing an active lifestyle. Thus the aim is to get more people to exercise and create a healthier lifestyle.

In addition to the titles as “Sport Municipality of the Year“ and “Width Sports municipality”, the Municipality of Gentofte is also an “Elite Sports Municipality”. The objective for Gentofte Municipality, as an elite municipality, is to strengthen and further develop cooperation with Team Denmark, as well as striving to improve the links between sporting, educational and everyday life for sports talents, athletes and coaches. Gentofte Municipality endeavours to create optimal frame-work that can support the individual to realize his/her sport-ing potential. All of this, so that the citizens of the Municipal-ity of Gentofte shall, regardless of age, have the opportunity to initiate and participate in activities to provide a healthy and active life with sports, exercise and movement - as an integral part of their everyday activities.

1   RULES  1.1   The  regatta  will  be  governed  by  the  rules  as  defined  in  The  Racing  Rules  of  Sailing  2013-­‐2016  

except  as  changed  by  these  sailing  instructions.  

1.2   No  National  Authority  prescriptions  will  apply.  

1.3   Furthermore,  the  following  rules  will  apply:  

The  prescription  of  the  Deed  of  Trust  of  the  International  Knarr  Championship  (IKC)  unless  modified  by  these  Sailing  Instructions.    

1.4   Racing  rule(s)  will  be  changed  as  follows:

2   NOTICES  TO  COMPETITORS  2.1   Notices  to  competitors  will  be  posted  on  the  official  notice  board  in  the  Knarr  Village  at  the  

northern  part  of  the  harbour.  2.2   Any  question  concerning  these  sailing  instructions,  scoring,  or  any  other  racing  issues  shall  be  

submitted  in  writing  to  the  race  committee.  All  written  inquiries  and  responses  will  be  posted  on  the  official  notice  board.  

2.3   The  race  committee  may  broadcast  race  information  on  VHF  radio  before  and  during  each  race.  Failure  of  such  information  to  be  given  or  received,  or  the  order  in  which  OCSs  calls  are

broadcasted,  shall  not  be  grounds  for  redress,  except  when  a  request  for  redress  under  this  instruction  is  initiated  by  the  race  committee  or  the  jury.  This  changes  rule  62.1.    

2.4   The  regatta  VHF  channel  will  be  displayed  on  the  official  notice  board.    

3   CHANGES  TO  SAILING  INSTRUCTIONS     Any  change  to  the  sailing  instructions  will  be  posted  on  the  official  notice  board  before  08:00  

hours  on  the  day  it  will  take  effect,  except  that  any  change  to  the  schedule  of  races  will  be  posted  by  18:00  hours  on  the  day  before  it  will  take  effect.  

4   SIGNALS  MADE  ASHORE  4.1   Signals  made  ashore  will  be  displayed  at  the  signal  mast  located  to  the  east  in  front  of  the  

Clubhouse.  

4.2   When  flag  AP  is  displayed  ashore,  ‘1  minute’  is  replaced  with  ‘not  less  than  60  minutes’  in  the  race  signal  AP.  

4.3   When  flag  Y  is  displayed  ashore,  rule  40  applies  at  all  times  while  afloat.  This  changes  the  Part  4  preamble.

5.2   When  more  than  one  race  is  scheduled  on  the  same  date,  the  succeeding  race  will  be  started  as  soon  as  is  practical  after  the  finish  of  the  preceding  race.  

5.3   The  Lay  day  will  not  be  used  for  racing.  

5.6   On  the  last  day  of  the  regatta,  no  warning  signal  will  be  made  after  15:00  hours.  

5.7 There  shall  be  no  practice  sailing  in  any  of  the  boats  assigned  to  the  regatta,  except  for  the  Practice  Race  on  Sunday  and  during  the  time  period  after  leaving  the  harbour  and  before  First  Warning  each  day.  

5.8 No  boats  may  leave  the  harbour  before  08:30  except  for  the  Practice  Race  before  11:00.

5.9 After  finishing  the  racing  each  day,  the  boats  must  sail  directly  back  to  the  harbour  and  to  their  assigned  berths.  

6   CLASS  FLAGS     Class  flag  will  be  the  Knarr  Flag.  

7   RACING  AREAS     Attachment  A  shows  the  location  of  the  racing  area,  which  will  be  1.0  –  3.0  NM  northeast  or  

east  of  Skovshoved  Harbour.  

8   THE  COURSES  8.1   The  diagram  in  Attachment  B  shows  the  course,  including  the  approximate  angles  between  

legs,  the  order  in  which  marks  are  to  be  passed,  and  the  side  on  which  each  mark  is  to  be  left.    

8.2   No  later  than  at  the  warning  signal,  the  race  committee  signal  boat  will  display  the  approximate  compass  bearing  of  the  first  leg.  Failure  to  do  so  shall  not  be  grounds  for  redress.  

9   MARKS  9.1   Marks  1,  3a  and  3b  will  be  inflatable  red  cylindrical  buoys  marked  with  “HH”.  Mark  2  will  be  a  

staff  buoy  with  orange  flag.  

9.2   The  starboard  end  starting  mark  will  be  the  race  committee  signal  boat  together  with  an  inflated  buoy  if  attached  to  the  race  committee  signal  boat.  

9.3     The  port  end  starting  mark  will  be  a  race  committee  boat  with  an  orange  flag.  

9.4   The  finishing  marks  will  be  a  staff  buoy  with  a  blue  flag  and  the  race  committee  signal  boat  with  a  blue  flag.  

9.5   A  race  committee  boat  signalling  a  change  of  a  leg  of  the  course  is  a  mark  as  provided  in  instruction  12.  

9.6   When  a  mark  or  buoy  is  laid  near  the  race  committee  signal  boat  approximately  on  the  starting  line,  it  is  a  starting  limit  mark  that  shall  be  left  on  the  same  side  as  the  nearby  race  committee  signal  boat.  

10   AREAS  THAT  ARE  OBSTRUCTIONS  

  Areas  of  obstructions  (if  any)  will  be  posted  at  the  official  notice  board.  

11   THE  START  11.1   Races  will  be  started  by  using  rule  26  with  the  following  amendment:    

To  alert  boats  that  a  race  is  about  to  be  started,  at  least  4  minutes  before  the  first  warning  signal,  the  orange  flags  will  be  set  on  the  race  committee  signal  boat  and  on  the  pin-­‐end  mark  with  one  sound.    

11.2   The  starting  line  will  be  between  staffs  displaying  orange  flag  on  the  starting  marks.

11.3   If  any  part  of  a  boat’s  hull,  crew  or  equipment  is  on  the  course  side  of  the  starting  line  at  her  starting  signal  and  she  is  identified,  the  race  committee  will  attempt  to  broadcast  her  sail  number  on  VHF  radio.  Failure  of  the  race  committee  to  make  this  broadcast  will  not  be  grounds  for  redress.  This  changes  rule  62.1  (a).  

11.4   A  boat  starting  later  than  5  minutes  after  her  starting  signal  will  be  scored  Did  Not  Start  without  a  hearing.  This  changes  rule  A4,  A5  and  63.1.  

12   CHANGE  OF  THE  NEXT  LEG  OF  THE  COURSE     To  change  the  next  leg  of  the  course,  the  race  committee  will  either  lay  a  new  mark  (or  move  

the  finishing  line)  or  move  the  original  mark.  

13   THE  FINISH  13.1   The  finishing  line  will  be  between  blue  flags  on  the  finishing  marks.  13.2   Flag  H  displayed  on  the  race  committee  signal  boat  at  the  finishing  line  signals:  “No  more  

races  today.  Sail  to  the  harbour.”  

14   PENALTY  SYSTEM  

14.1   Rule  44.1  is  changed  so  that  the  Two-­‐Turns  Penalty  is  replaced  by  the  One-­‐Turn  Penalty  unless  she  may  have  broken  a  rule  of  Part  2  while  racing  within  the  zone  of  a  rounding  mark  or  finishing  mark,  in  which  case  the  Penalty  shall  be  a  Two-­‐Turns  Penalty.  

14.2     Rule  44.2  is  changed  so  the  Penalty  taken  at  Mark  1  or  Mark  2  can  be  postponed  until  after  rounding  Mark  2.  

14.3   If  any  collision  occurs  protest  shall  always  be  given  regardless  of  the  use  of  alternative  penalty.  This  changes  rules  44.1  and  60.1  a    

15   TIME  LIMITS,  TARGET  TIMES  AND  WIND  SPEED  

15.1   Time  limits  and  target  times  are  as  follows:       Time  limit:   Mark  1  time  limit:   Target  time:     120  minute   30  minutes     60  minutes  

If  no  boat  has  passed  Mark  1  within  the  Mark  1  time  limit  the  race  will  be  abandoned.  Failure  to  meet  the  target  time  will  not  be  grounds  for  redress.  This  changes  rule  62.1(a).  

15.2   Boats  failing  to  finish  within  30  minutes  after  the  first  boat  sails  the  course  and  finishes  will  be  scored  Did  Not  Finish  (DNF)  without  a  hearing.  This  changes  rules  35,  A4  and  A5.  

15.3   There  will  be  no  start  if  the  wind  measured  on  the  race  committee  signal  boat  is  below  2  meter/sec  or  above  12  meter/sec.  (as  average  over  5  minutes).    

15.4   The  Race  is  being  cancelled,  if  the  mean  wind  on  the  race  committee  signal  boat  is  measured  above  12  meter/sec  for  a  period  of  more  than  10  minutes.

16   PROTESTS  AND  REQUESTS  FOR  REDRESS  16.1   Protest  forms  are  available  at  the  race  office.  Protests  and  requests  for  redress  or  reopening  

shall  be  delivered  there  within  the  appropriate  time  limit.  

16.2   The  protest  time  limit  is  90  minutes  after  the  last  boat  has  finished  the  last  race  of  the  day.  The  same  time  limit  applies  to  protests  by  the  race  committee  and  the  protest  committee  and  to  requests  for  redress.  This  changes  rules  61.3  and  62.2.  

16.3   Notices  will  be  posted  no  later  than  30  minutes  after  the  protest  time  limit  to  inform  competitors  of  hearings  in  which  they  are  parties  or  named  as  witnesses.    The  notice  will  include  scheduled  starting  time  of  the  hearings.  Hearings  will  be  held  in  the  protest  room,  located  at  regatta  office.  

16.4   Notices  of  protests  by  the  race  committee  or  protest  committee  will  be  posted  to  inform  boats  under  rule  61.1(b).  

16.5   A  list  of  boats  that,  under  instruction  14.4,  have  been  penalized  for  breaking  rule  42  will  be  posted.  

16.6   Breaches  of  instructions  5.7,  5.8,  5.9,  11.3,  13.2,  18,  21,  23,  24,  25,  26  and  27  will  not  be  grounds  for  a  protest  by  a  boat.  This  changes  rule  60.1(a).  Penalties  for  these  breaches  may  be  less  than  disqualification  if  the  protest  committee  so  decides.  The  scoring  abbreviation  for  a  discretionary  penalty  imposed  under  this  instruction  will  be  DPI.  

16.7   On  the  last  scheduled  day  of  racing  a  request  for  reopening  a  hearing  shall  be  delivered  

  (a)   within  the  protest  time  limit  if  the  requesting  party  was  informed  of  the  decision  on  the  previous  day;  

  (b)   no  later  than  30  minutes  after  the  requesting  party  was  informed  of  the  decision  on  that  day.  

  This  changes  rule  66.  

16.8   A  yacht,  disabled  through  an  accident,  or  failure  of  supplied  equipment,  and  through  no  fault  of  her  crew,  may  request  special  consideration  from  the  Race  Committee.  Such  yacht  must  make  every  effort  to  finish  the  race,  provided  that  further  damage  to  the  yacht  will  not  be  incurred.  To  request  special  consideration,  the  yacht  must  display  a  yellow  flag  conspicuously  in  her  rigging  at  the  first  reasonable  opportunity  after  the  breakdown,  and  shall  keep  it  displayed  until  acknowledged  by  the  Race  Committee.  This  is  a  change  of  rule  60  and  62.  The  boat  must  file  a  written  protest  in  accordance  with  rule  60  after  returning  to  harbour.  

17   SCORING  

17.1   The  Low  Point  scoring  system  of  RRS  Appendix  A,  as  changed  below,  shall  apply:  

  (a)   When  fewer  than  six  (6)  races  have  been  completed,  a  team’s  series  score  will  be  the     total  of  its  race  scores.  This  changes  rule  A2.  

  (b)   When  6  -­‐  8  races  have  been  completed,  a  teams  series  score  will  be  the  total  of  her  race  scores  excluding  her  worst  score.

  (c)   When  9  -­‐  12  races  have  been  completed,  a  team’s  series  score  will  be  the  total  of  her  race  scores  excluding  her  two  worst  scores.  

  (d)   When  13  or  more  races  have  been  completed,  a  team´s  series  score  will  be  a  total  of  her  race  scores  excluding  her  three  worst  scores.  

17.2   In  the  event  of  breakdown  and  when  special  consideration  is  requested,  as  described  in  Deed  of  Trust,  item  J,  the  Protest  Committee  may,  at  their  sole  discretion,  at  a  hearing  to  take  place  at  the  conclusion  of  the  race,  take  any  one  of  the  following  actions.  This  is  a  change  of  rule  A4.  

1. Order  the  race  to  be  re-­‐sailed.  

2. Award  such  yacht  a  point  or  points  as  if  it  had  been  unimpaired.  Await  the  completion  of  the  series,  and  calculate  the  number  of  points  according  to  section  A  and  B.  Award  the  yacht  the  average  number  of  points  of  A  and  B,  section  3  below.  

3.  

a. The  number  of  points  resulting  from  adding  together  the  number  of  points  obtained  by  the  skipper  of  the  disabled  yacht,  in  the  other  races  of  the  regatta,  and  dividing  that  number  by  the  number  of  other  races  which  that  skipper  completed  during  the  entire  series,  and  for  which  breakdown  points  were  not  awarded.  

b. The  number  of  points  resulting  from  adding  together  the  points  obtained  by  the  disabled  yacht  in  the  other  races  of  the  regatta,  regardless  of  who  sailed  it,  and  which  were  completed  by  that  yacht,  and  divide  that  number  by  the  number  of  other  races  so  completed  by  that  yacht  during  the  entire  series,  and  for  which  breakdown  points  were  not  awarded.  The  points  under  this  section  shall  be  in  accordance  with  the  actual  finish  position  of  the  yacht  and  shall  not  reflect  any  disqualification  of  the  skipper  sailing  the  yacht  at  that  time.  

18   SAFETY  REGULATIONS  

  A  boat  that  retires  from  a  race  shall  notify  the  race  committee  as  soon  as  possible  and  if  possible  display  her  nation’s  flag.    

19   REPLACEMENT  OF  CREW  OR  EQUIPMENT  

19.1   The  crew  number  and  members  must  be  the  same  in  all  races.  No  member  of  the  crew  shall  be  substituted  unless  a  written  permission  is  obtained  from  the  Race  Committee  the  day  before  the  race,  or  in  case  of  acute  illness,  as  soon  as  possible.  

19.2   Substitution  of  damaged  or  lost  equipment  will  not  be  allowed  unless  authorized  by  the  race  committee.    

20   EQUIPMENT  AND  MEASUREMENT  CHECKS     A  boat  or  equipment  may  be  inspected  at  any  time  for  compliance  with  the  class  rules  and  

sailing  instructions.  On  the  water,  a  boat  can  be  instructed  by  a  race  committee  equipment  inspector  or  measurer  to  proceed  immediately  to  a  designated  area  for  inspection.

21   ADVERTISING     The  Organizing  Authority  may  require  that  boats  display  advertising  from  the  main  event  

sponsors  (stickers  and  flags,  ISAF  Regulation  20  apply).  

22   OFFICIAL  BOATS     Official  boats  may  display  the  KDY  burgee.  

23   SUPPORT  BOATS     Team  leaders,  coaches  and  other  support  personnel  shall  stay  at  least  50  meters  away  from  

any  racing  boat  and  the  starting  area  from  the  time  of  the  preparatory  signal  for  the  to  start  until  all  boats  have  finished  or  retired  or  the  race  committee  signals  a  postponement,  general  recall  or  abandonment.  

24   TRASH  DISPOSAL     Boats  shall  not  put  trash  in  the  water.  Trash  may  be  placed  aboard  support  and  race  

committee  boats.  

25   HAUL-­‐OUT  RESTRICTIONS     Boats  shall  not  be  hauled  out  during  the  regatta  except  with  and  according  to  the  terms  of  

prior  written  permission  of  the  race  committee.  

26   DIVING  EQUIPMENT  AND  PLASTIC  POOLS     Underwater  breathing  apparatus  and  plastic  pools  or  their  equivalent  shall  not  be  used  

around  keelboats  during  the  regatta.  

27   RADIO  COMMUNICATION  AND  NAVIGATION  DEVICES    27.1   Except  in  an  emergency,  a  boat  shall  neither  make  radio  transmissions  while  racing  nor  

receive  radio  communications  not  available  to  all  boats.  This  restriction  also  applies  to  mobile  telephones.  

27.2   The  race  committee  may  not  acknowledge  any  radio  transmission  except  in  the  case  of  an  emergency,  and  shall  not  enter  into  any  dialogue  with  competitors.  

27.3   Devices  transmitting  and/or  correlating  data  relative  to  wind  direction  or  speed,  or  boat  speed  and  location,  by  means  such  as,  but  not  limited  to  electronic,  mechanical,  hydraulic  or  pneumatic,  are  prohibited.  Compasses  that  are  entirely  self-­‐contained  units  giving  solely  direction,  a  tracking  prompt  and  have  a  timer  are  permitted.  

28   PRIZES  28.1   Prizes  will  be  given  as  follows:  

(a)     The  winner  of  the  series  will  receive  the  perpetual  International  Knarr  Trophy  (which       may  be  retained  until  the  next  championship)  together  with  a  permanent  trophy.  

  (b)   Prizes  will  be  awarded  to  the  first  six  skippers  with  crew.

  (c)   Mid-­‐week  prizes  will  be  given  to  the  best  skipper  with  crew.  The  best  skipper  will     receive  the  Georg  von  Erpecom  Perpetual  Trophy,  which  may  be  retained  until  the     next  championship.  

  (d)   Daily  prizes  will  be  awarded.    28.2   Overall  prizes  will  be  awarded  at  the  Awards  Dinner  on  Saturday,  August  8,  2015.    

29   DISCLAIMER  OF  LIABILITY     Competitors  participate  in  the  regatta  entirely  at  their  own  risk.  See  rule  4,  Decision  to  Race.  

The  organizing  authority  will  not  accept  any  liability  for  material  damage  or  personal  injury  or  death  sustained  in  conjunction  with  or  prior  to,  during,  or  after  the  regatta.  

30   INSURANCE     In  the  event  that  a  boat  and/or  equipment  is  lost  and/or  damaged  each  participating  skipper,  

regardless  of  fault  agree  to  pay  a  deductible  to  the  Danish  Knarr  Admiralty  of  DKK  3.000  per  occurrence.    Each  participating  skipper  must  pay  this  deductible  for  each  occurrence  before  he  may  use  a  boat  in  a  subsequent  race  day.  

31   OTHER  INFORMATION  TO  COMPETITORS      

31.1   BOAT  LOGBOOK  (a)   Competitors  shall  report  any  damage  or  loss  of  equipment  to  the  Technical  

Committee  representative  (the  Danish  skipper  in  charge  of  that  boat)  immediately  after  securing  the  boat  ashore.    

(b)   Each  boat  is  provided  a  logbook  by  the  race  committee  for  boat  condition  statements.  It  is  the  responsibility  of  the  skipper  of  the  boat  that  the  boat’s  logbook  is  updated  according  to  section  c  and  d  below.    

(c)   Any  breakdown  of  gear,  loss  of  equipment  or  damage,  however  slight,  whether  materially  affecting  the  boat’s  performance  or  not,  must  be  stated  in  the  logbook  and  reported  to  the  Technical  Committee  representative  immediately  after  returning  to  the  harbour,  and  before  handing  over  the  boat  to  the  next  skipper.  

(d)   The  logbook  shall  be  signed  by  the  skipper  and  by  the  Technical  Committee  representative.  

31.2   NATIONS  FLAG  A  racing  boat  shall  not  display  her  nation’s  flag  while  racing.

COPENHAGEN NAMED THE WORLD’S BEST BIKE FRIENDLY CITYBy Nicolai Lassen

Every day thousands of Copenhageners unlock their bike to drive to work, school or just to take a ride. And there are good reasons not to take the bus, car or walk. The capital of Denmark is the best city in the world for biking.

Mother Nature took the first important step, since Copenha-gen has few hills and absolutely no “bike unfriendly” moun-tains. The Danish capital is consistent in its investment in bicycling as a means of transportation, and work to further develop conditions. The next important step is a clearer political vision.

All authorities have been working together to make the Dan-ish capital of Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. The bike is already an obvious means of transportation for residents, because the Municipality of Copenhagen has for many years made a determined effort to improve infrastruc-ture, security and parking facilities for cyclists.

Every day 55% of all Copenhageners take the bike to and from work. Together they drive more than 1.17 million kilom-eters per day. This is equivalent to three times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

Bicycle paths, bicycle parking and bicycle traffic lights dom-inate the townscape in Copenhagen. The infrastructure has been carefully organized, taking into account the 150,000 citizens who every day choose to travel by bicycle. There are some 340 km of cycle tracks in Copenhagen and the vast majority of the major roads are equipped with bike paths, either in the form of separate paths or markings on a level with the roadway.

In selected areas of the city - between residential areas and the center – there are so-called ‘green waves’ which is timed traffic lights that allow cyclists to drive the entire stretch with-out stopping at red lights provided they keep a speed of 20

km/h. In the morning the “wave” is directed into town, in the afternoon out of town. At traffic lights the cars stop 5 meters behind the stop line for cyclists, and the bikes have their own traffic lights, allowing them to move before the cars. In spite of the changing seasons, it is possible to cycle throughout the year in Copenhagen. When it snows, the municipality clears the cycle tracks before clearing the roadway, and 70% of cyclists continue to ride. If the weather becomes too much of a challenge, it is also possible to take the bike on-board both the trains and the metro. Many who live outside of Copenhagen, combine train and bike.

Many urban planners visit Copenhagen for inspiration. The important learning in the last 25 years of bike development is that no one questions the bicycle as a mode of transport. Good infrastructure, where cyclists can feel safe, is crucial to whether the citizens decide to use the bicycle as a means of transportation.

In Copenhagen, the citizens are neither environmentalists nor exercisers - they use the bicycle as a means of transporta-tion because it is quick and easy.

Lay Day on bikeThe Knarr sailors shall experience Copenhagen, as the local citizens experience their city. You are going to ride bicycles. If you have never rode a bike, do not worry. Then you will ride a tandem bike together with another biker. Experience the new Copenhagen, try the special “bike high ways”. Lunch will be served in the “Free City of Christiania” . You must go by train with your bike, together we will take a trip with the harbour bus, along with our bikes. The two wheels are your best friend, on Wednesday 5th of August.

When the bikes are returned, the after party will take place at the Knarr Village.

Creating the sustainable city of the future is the overall vision for the new district of Copenhagen. A sustaina-ble city is not only a matter of environmental respon-sibility, but also of social diversity and the addition of value. The City of Copenhagen is growing and is expected to increase by 100,000 by 2025. Nordhavnen is one of many projects, intended to accommodate a large proportion of these new inhabitants, give them a good place to live and provide them with workplaces, education and experiences.

Copenhagen, once an industrial city, has transformed into a city of knowledge. Nordhavnen is symbolic of this develop-ment, as it is a former harbour area that will become a center for the knowledge and service trades of the future.

Almost all industrial areas along the harbour front are cur-rently changing into mixed-function areas. The harbour basin has become a blue recreational space at the heart of the city, and the harbour area has the potential to become the ‘blue commons’ of Copenhagen, for the benefit of city residents and visitors alike. With water as the all-pervading element, that frames the public life of the district. Nordhavnen will boost Copenhagen’s image as an envi-ronmental metropolis. Renewable energy and new types of

energy, optimal use of resources, recycling of resources and sustainable transport will help make Nordhavnen a model for sustainable development and sustainable design. The urban spaces, the natural environment and not least the water should invite experiences, enthusiasm and activities for everyone.

This is why a wide variety of housing types will be built in the district, just as the various functions will be mixed. Housing and public activities should be linked directly with the water, just as it should be possible to see and use the water every-where in the district. Waterfronts, quays and coasts must therefore be open to the public.

Nordhavnen will have a number of small parks (urban gar-dens) located in small pockets created by shifts in the build-ing structure. These pocket parks will serve as open local spaces and quiet places of refuge in an otherwise densely built area. They provide room for small playgrounds, trees and recreational activities in residents’ immediate environ-ment. They also serve as green oases with various types of trees and other plants. Pocket parks will generally be located a bit away from main squares and pedestrian areas, which mean they also serve as local passageways.

Nordhavnen will reinforce Copenhagen’s position as a sig-nificant international city of knowledge. A city of sustainable mobility Nordhavnen will spearhead the adoption of sustaina-ble transport solutions. The natural choice for people should be to walk, cycle or use public transport rather than travel by car. It will make Nordhavnen one of the most ambitious urban development projects in the twenty-first century.

The new urban district is built on top of old Copenhagen. As Nordhavnen has been extended several times over the years using construction rubble and earth from excavations in Copenhagen. The history of the harbour is indeed also the history of Copenhagen. The various extensions the last 1.000 years, have not only made Copenhagen larger, but have also provided space for thriving businesses that have generated jobs for people in Copenhagen and ensured rapid growth of the city.

Crude elegance to MidweekThe “Docken” located in the North Harbour of Copenhagen - directly out to Øresund with a view to the sunset over Hellerup, Skovshoved and the Swedish island of Ven.

The “Docken” is a former salt warehouse. Since 2006, the raw industrial framework has been transferred into a cultural fix point. Midweek will become an evening you will never forget. SAILING THE LEAGUE: THE PULSE HAS RECOVERED IN SAILINGBy Nicolai Lassen

Despite the fact that Denmark has more than 7.000 km of coastline and thousands of ports, sailing is not the great Danish national sport as it should be. On the contrary sailing is declining and cannot attract the young people. There is an alarming need to get a dynamic mindset initiated.

Fortunately, there are many good sailors, who in recent years have gone against the tide. Personally, I also have a small share in the project. “Sailing League” has become the life-giving defibrillator, which should help to reverse the trend for the width in sailing and strengthen the club life for the 16-60-year-old. Should sailing succeed also in future, a whole host of dynamic environments will be recreated in the clubs.

History is short, started in May 2013, only two years ago. The Danish ISAF organization – Dansk Sejlunion launched this strategy: “Pulse, and water in your hair”. The vision was to create a network and a daily life around the yacht club. The goal was to get “my club” buzzing with life, i.e. less banqueting room and more yacht club, always filled with lots of high pulse. In order to create awareness of sailing in wider circles, the ambition was to establish an active sport boat environment and a sound bite or media established sport boat league, where sailing clubs challenge each other

throughout the season.

The Sailing League should attract the good parties and the beautiful people, the party that got “Rikke, 24 years old” down to the harbor. Politically totally incorrect, but the weapon is to get the new sailors interested in sailing and jointly create a good party around the concept of “club life”.

Offhand a difficult project, but help was to be found in Hamburg. The German sailing league was in its first season and willing to openly share its experiences. It gave the work group the opportunity to request the board of the Dansk Sejlunion to take a number of strategic decisions:

“We have taken two important principle decisions that will have great importance for Danish sailing for many years to come. Firstly, that we establish a new sailing league where sailors compete on club teams. Secondly, that we especially take a forward focus on sports boats. Partly, by recommend-ing clubs to invest in sports boats themselves, and partly by basing the sailing league on sports boats Dansk Sejlunions President Hans Natorp, October 2013

Everybody within Danish yachting agree on the Sailing League and the thoughts behind - and the cheering has been great - all around, from east to west, from young to old.

The drama is super intenseNo club can feel assured of a continued participation in the Sailing League.

The Sailing League brings sailing close to the audience, into the very heart of selected Danish ports. The races take place close to shore, inside the port environments where there is ample opportunity to present the ulti-mate in boating. You can sail in almost no wind, making it quite spectacular. And there is guarantee of drama, close duels and clashes when six club teams meet on the racecourse.

The event lasts 3 days with up to 45 races each with duration of 12 minutes. When the season is over, the five clubs with the lowest results will move down in the second division, or enter a new qualification. The top 5 in the second division move up.

In 2015 there will be races in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, England, Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic, and the United States. The winners from each country will meet in a Champion League Final.

In 2015 both the first and second divisions will be compet-ing. A total of 36 sailing clubs are active and competing for the honor as Denmark’s best sailing club.

Best of all, the league idea embraces very broad, there are yacht clubs from all parts of Denmark. The four acts, which take place every year, show that it embraces the entire club and restores the joy of sailing and life at the club. The diver-sity of Danish sailing clubs is enormous, primarily because the mindsets are very different from club to club. One thing the 4 league races have in common is a great volunteerism culture. For each event, volunteers have worked hard from early morning till late evening, usually with a smile on their faces. The sprouting club life is growing - the whole breadth of Sailing Denmark likes to be a part of this – and thanks for that.

The “child”: “Sailing League”, is still a child. There are many buttons to be turned, both in the individual clubs, but also in the league itself. But the start was a success, few people had believed. 2015 will show “Sailing League” as a wild teenager who sets new standards for Danish sailing.

The heritage of Georg Jensen as a House of Art and Design is renewed with a suite of new collections for Spring and Summer 2015. The young sculptor and silversmith Georg Jensen opened his namesake studio in 1904 in Copenhagen. His unique combination of fine arts and being a metal smith revived the tradition of the artist craftsman. His innovative silver master-pieces in the era of Art Nouveau along with his foresight to invite a group of artists to design new works rendered some of the most important Silver and Hollowware icons of the 20th

century.
