GENERAL INFORMATIONThe buzzer or optional chime module is located on

the convenience center. The convenience center is lo-

cated u nder t he drivers end of the instru ment panel

    (F i gs . 1 a n d 2 ). T h e b u zz er or ch i m e s ou n d s a n a u -

dible wa rn ing tone in an y of the following conditions:

Vehicle light s a re ON wh en th e ignition is switched

OFF, the key is r emoved a nd drivers door opened. Key is in th e ignition an d dr ivers door is open. (On

some vehicles, t he buzzer will not sound if the igni-

tion switch is in the RUN position).

Ignition is switched ON an d dr ivers seat belt is not

buckled. Sound will quit after 4 to 8 seconds. Besides

    t h e s o u n d , a s e a t b e l t l i g h t i n d i c a t o r t u r n s o n a s a

reminder to fasten seat belt .

An input from t he Drivers Informat ion Center is

    received.

There is also a door lock inhibit feature. If the key

    is in t h e ign i tion or t h e lig ht s a r e O N , w h ile t h e

drivers door is open, t he power locks/keyless entr y

    will not operate.

OPERATIONBattery voltage for module operation is supplied to

    t w o p in s . Vol t a ge i s a l w a ys p r e se n t a t p in 7 . P i n 1

receives voltage when the ignition switch is in the

    RUN or START position.

    LI G H TS O N

To sound the lights on warning, the module needs:

the headlamp switch must be closed

the drivers door jamb switch m ust be closed.

These conditions ground pin 6 of the module. These

switches are closed when the headlamp switch is on,

and th e dr ivers door is open.

    SEAT BELT WARNING

To sound the seat belt warning, the module needs:

    battery voltage at pin (7)

battery voltage at the ignition switch input (Pin 1)

a ground at the seat belt switch.

    a ground at Pin 3.

This occurs when the seat belt switch is closed because

th e drivers seat belt is n ot buckled. The fasten belt

light also will turn on along with the warning sound.

    To s ou n d t h e k ey i n ign it ion a la r m , t h e m od u le

    needs:

the ignition key warning switch must be closed

the drivers door jamb switch mus t be closed.

These conditions ground pin 6 of the module. These

There will be 6 beeps (3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps) unless

the fault goes a way or SET/SELECT is pressed in diag-

nostics mode. There should be no beeping for the first 8

seconds after the ignit ion turns ON. Beeping will only

occur for two messages in a row if the second message

has higher priority over the first message.

    D O OR LO C K I N H I B I T

Pin 8 of the chime module provides the ground for

the coil side of the power door lock relay.

The LOCK function will not operate if: The chime module is not plugged in.

    T h e k e y i s i n t h e i gn i t ion , o r t h e l ig h t s a r e O N ,

while th e dr ivers door is open.

The door lock inhibit feature of the chime module

is inoperable du e t o defective electronics in the chime.

In this case the operation is unpredictable.

DIAGNOSISIf the buzzer/chime unit does not operate as described,

    ch eck t h e t w o fu ses fo r p i n s 1 an d 7 (F i g s. 3 , 4 ) an d

replace as required. If the fuses are not defective, per-

form the following tests to determ ine if the problem is in

the module or in the wiring. Remove the module from

the fuse block. Plug in a known good module and check

its operation. If the problem is not corr ected by r eplacing

the module, remove the module and continue as follows:

Measure voltage at buzzer/chime module connector

pin 7. Meter should read battery voltage. If not, re-

    pair open circuit to fuse.

    RESISTANCE TESTS

    CAUTION: Before making resistance measurements,

turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery

negative cable. This will avoid damaging the ohm-

    meter.

should read zero ohms. If not, repair open circuit to

    ground.

repair open circuit t o groun d (or buckle switch m ay be

defective). Meter should r ead open circuit if drivers

seat belt is buckled. If not, repair short t o ground (or

    buckle switch may be defective).

Buzzer/chime module conn ector pin 6. Open driv-

ers door, k ey in ignition (in OFF position). Meter

should read zero ohms. If not, repair open circuit to

ground (or key-in-ignition switch may be defective).

Buzzer/chime module connector pin 6. Remove key

from ignition. Open drivers door, headlamp switch

on, meter should read zero ohms. If not, repair open

    circuit to ground.

    REMOVAL

    (1) Disconnect batt ery n egative cable.

    (2) Tilt column onlyremove ti lt lever (count er-

    clockwise).

    (3) Carefully remove both upper and lower steering

column covers. Requires removal of 3 screws (TorxT-20).

(tamper proof Torx bit Snap-On TTXR20B2 or equiva-

    lent required) (Fig. 7).

    (5) Gently pull switch away from t he column. Re-

lease 2 connector locks on the 7 terminal wiring con-

nector, then remove t he connector from the ignition

switch.(6) Release connector lock on the 4 terminal Key In

and Halo l ight connector then remove th e connector

from the ignition switch (Fig. 8).

    cylinder surface (Fig. 9).

    (b) Rotate the key clockwise to the Off position.

The key cylinder should now be unseated from the

ignition switch assembly and about 1/8 inch above

the ignition switch halo light ring (Fig. 10).

CAUTION: Do not try to remove the key cylinder at

    this time.

    (c) Rotate the key counterclockwise to the Lock

    position and remove the key.

    (d) Remove key cylind er (Fig. 11).

    INSTALLATION

    (1) Install 2 wiring connectors to th e switch. Make

sure that the switch locking tabs are fully seated in

    the wiring connectors.
