Soup Kitchen Update June 7th: Team 6, led by Michelle Gabriel; 152 were fed. Food and helpers from St Peter’s, Birch Cove.

Yesterday, June 14th: Team 2, led by Mary Hills and Michelle Gabriel. Food from Feed Nova Scotia.

This week, June 21st: Team 1, led by Maxine Miles. Food and helpers from St Thomas’s, Fall River.

Financial Update Undesignated offerings for June 8th totalled $2,463 including a quarter of the monthly direct debit offerings.

Over the 29 weeks left in the year (9 of which are July/August Summer Sundays) we need an average of $6,336 per week to meet our budgeted offerings. This will be a real challenge. Please remember that we approved the parish budget together at the AGM mindful of the realm of ministries so important to our parish family and this community. Our prayers and sacrificial giving are so important now.

Thank you to those who enrolled for Direct Debit offerings. Last Sunday the 8 o'clock congregation was encouraged to participate. An update of the Drive will be provided next week once pending applications are confirmed.

Plant / Antiques and Collectibles Sale 2014 We are pleased to announce that the Plant and Antiques Sale brought in $2850 for our Deck the Hall campaign! This has been another successful outcome. Congratulations and thanks to all who donated plants or other items, and to all the willing workers.

Special thanks to YouthNet for setting up and helping with the clean up, and once again to Edmonds for their generous donation of popular plants.

Father Purchase was outstanding with his large donation of homemade breads and cakes, and offering to help at the two day event. We all wish him a full recovery.

Thankyou everyone!

Update on Fr Purchase Fr. Purchase is now at home and recuperating from an infection. He will be required to undergo further surgery within the next two weeks. He is his cheerful self and grateful for the care he is receiving. Let us continue to remember Fr. purchase in our prayers.

During this time, Fr. Thorne has generously made himself available to take care of our services and to provide emergency pastoral care. In case of an emergency please first contact the parish office (423-1059).

Our Rector Designate: Fr Christopher Snook On March 16th, it was announced that we will welcome Father Christopher Snook, currently Rector of St Luke's Church in Regina, as the Rector of St. George's, beginning on September 1st.

He became an active parishioner at St. George’s while a student at the University of King’s College. During his time in the parish he served, preached, conducted study series for youth and adults, and was involved as a volunteer for St George’s YouthNet. During these years he made many of his most nourishing and significant friendships while discovering in community the richness of classical Anglican devotion coupled with intense community service. Since leaving the parish he has returned to preach on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (2005) and to conduct the annual parish retreat in Lent (2010). He was made a deacon at St George’s on the Eve of St Michael and All Angels in 2005, and in 2006, he was ordained priest by the Right Reverend Anthony Burton..

Father Christopher shares St George’s commitment to what the late Dr. Robert Crouse called the life of “penitential adoration”. This life is expressed in the parish’s commitment to know the love of God in faithful worship and to participate in the outpouring of that love by humble service in the community. We know Christ present in the Sacrament of the Altar inasmuch as we discern His presence in our neighbour.

It was at St George’s that our new priest first encountered the radical call of the gospel to the sacrificial love of God and neighbour. It is a tremendous blessing for him to be called home. Let us pray for Father Snook and his family as they prepare to move to Halifax.

Deck the Hall & The Plant Sale Wow, the Plant and Antique sale raised $2,850 to help with the next phase of Deck the Hall. Many thanks to Michal King and her indomitable and dedicated crew for their very hard work: they kept on selling to the last plant. Michal is one of those people who never make a fuss but just get on and do so much work for the parish—thank you! Someone who attended said, "The plant sale had such a great atmosphere and was absolutely lovely to attend. The way everything was laid out...like a visit to a botanical garden! You need to know what you are doing to organize such an event."

A Noon-time Organ Recital will be given by James Burchill at theCathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello Street, Halifax, on Wednesday 2 July 2014 at 12.10 pm. A collection in aid of the Organ Restoration Fund will be received. The programme, Thomas Attwood and his Connections, will include works by J.S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, Thomas Attwood and Felix Mendelssohn.

Saint Michael’s Youth Conference August 18-23, at Camp Wildwood, Bouctouche, NB Through worship, study, discussion, recreation and relaxation, the Saint Michael’s Youth Conference seeks a clearer vision of God in Jesus Christ, and the strength and power to serve God and His Church.

A day at St Michael's: All students participate in three morning classes according to what year they are in. With a swimming pool and playing fields on site, as well as trips to local recreational sites (Magic Mountain, etc), there will be lots to do in the afternoon. Sports will be an optional part of the programme.

Former conferee Liz Curry says, “I can tell you this is no ordinary summer camp. It's a deeply formative week and also a lot of fun! And the classes are like NONE you've ever had in school.”

Conferees should be between the ages of 13 and 19. Applications and further information about the conference and cost may be found at the back of the church or at www.smyc.ca

Further Thoughts on the Readings: Trinity Sunday "We worship one God in Trinity, and the Trinity in unity," says the Creed of St. Athanasius. "Three Persons and One God." But what does that mean, beyond sheer mystification? There are certainly many homely images employed in an effort to explain. There is the venerable image of the shamrock—three leaves, and yet one leaf. There is the image of the man who has three characters—Father to his children, husband to his wife, worker in his profession. Perhaps such illustrations help, but they certainly do not come very close to what we want to say; and often they are misleading, and even downright heretical—Arian, or worse!

St. Augustine does better. He asks us to consider the life of the human soul, God's image. The soul remembers, it knows, it loves. These are three activities, and yet they are the activity of one soul. In us, these personal activities are an imperfect unity--our reason and our love do not simply coincide. God is the perfect unity of personal activity: He is, He knows, He loves; and with Him, these three are one. Father, Word and Spirit, three persons and one God: all equally divine, all absolutely God, one substance, one reality. God is not three beings, three "personalities:" God is one. Yet His unity is not a dead and static thing—He is the living God. His is the unity of personal activity: He is, He knows, he loves, eternally; and with God these personal activities, these "persons", have a unity and equality towards which we can only strive. Our life is ever an imitation of that perfect life in which we are called to share as sons.

To us, God's life remains a mystery. But that does not mean that we understand nothing, that we "ignorantly worship." It means that we understand imperfectly a truth which exceeds our comprehension; and our knowing ends in the worship of a glory which remains always beyond it. And thus we return to the language of poetry and prophecy. "Behold a door is opened in heaven", and we catch a glimpse of the majesty of God.

Cherubim and seraphim / Veil their faces with their wings; Eyes of angels are too dim / To behold the king of kings, While they sing eternally/ To the Blessed Trinity.

Robert Crouse, From a Sermon for Trinity Sunday
