Financial Stewardship The words of the Psalmist echo the theme of all of today’s readings. “Happy are they who hope in the Lord.” As good
stewards, firmly grounded in that hope, may we bear fruit in due season - assisting the poor, feeding the hungry, and consoling the sorrowful whenever we have the chance.

8:30 am Sunday choir practices 7:00 pm Wednesdays 5:00 pm Saturday & 11:00 am Sunday practices 7:00 pm Thursdays Glory Bound Youth Choir practices 6:00 pm Wednesdays We proclaim the penitential rite through chant. Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison, Kyrie Eleison, Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. Our Gospel acclamation which has been Alleluia is changed to Glory to you, O word of God, Lord Jesus Christ! The Mystery of Faith: We will be using: “We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection, until you come again.” Same melody, different words. Our Lamb of God: During Lent we will use the Latin chanted version which is #312 in your Gather hymnal, Agnus Dei. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. While these changes are temporary in our spiritual preparation through Lent, we embrace the chants and sing with our whole heart and soul. May our songs rise like incense! Needed: Musicians, Choir members, and Cantors For info about our liturgical ministries or to join our choir, please contact Cheri Poole at [email protected] or 205.541.7834.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call Recently a parishioner, a model train enthusiast, volunteered at a local elementary school to share his hobby with the students there. He spent time telling the students about each of his model trains and how they worked. He also shared his memories of time spent with his own father enjoying his train sets when he was a child. The love of his hobby and the happiness he felt, has been passed on not only to his own children, but has been shared with other’s children as well. A simple example of stewardship and sharing ones gifts and talents with others.
Help us! Submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.
Divorced Group Prince of Peace is considering adding a new small group ministry for women who are currently divorced. If you are interested in participating in this group, please call Sonya Phillips at 205.978.3737.
Service “God so constructed the body, that there may be no dissension in the body, but that all the members
may be concerned for one another. If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members share its joy.” (1 Cor. 12:24b, 25-26)
Parishioners of a stewardship parish are ready to minister to varied needs of their own parish family as well as the need of the wider community and Church. Just as members of family come together to help one of their own, a stewardship parish family serves those who are hurting or in need, doubting or seeking salvation. They stand ready and eager collectively to wrap their arms around their brothers and sisters when they suffer in trial and/or celebrate special events in their lives. A stewardship parish seeks to serve and to be served, to give and to receive. At Prince of Peace, we practice the gift of Service in many ways, including the following Ministries:
Altar Linen Cleaning Outreach Meals Ministry Bread and Roses Breast Cancer Survivors Christians in Action Ecumenical Outreach ESL Classes Greif Support Habitat for Humanity Hispanic Social Services Vestments Caring Needles Eucharistic Ministers-Outreach
The Bread and Roses Team would like to thank those who provided food for the
homeless and needy at the Church of the Reconciler last Sunday. Over 200
people were served a delicious hot meal thanks to your generosity.

40 Days for Life Campaign
(Taken in part from Bishop Baker’s letter endorsing the 40 Days for Life Campaign) “If you want equal justice for all, and true freedom and lasting peace, then, America, defend life! All the great causes that are yours today will have meaning only to the extent that you guarantee the Right to Life and protect the human person.” These are the courageous & challenging words of Blessed John Paul II to us today…Many Americans, including many Catholics, continue on a path of indifference to the plight of the unborn and the elderly who are in dan-ger of euthanasia. And that is why ALL OF US are called to pray with fervor in prayer groups, Eucharistic Adoration, weekday Masses, and so on, and to participate by witnessing in “the public square” for the Cause of Life through powerful events like the 40 Days for Life Campaign, which will run from 13 February (Ash Wednesday) through 24 March (Palm Sunday) 2013. There will be local 40 Days for Life campaigns in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa in our diocese, and in hundreds of locations throughout the USA and internationally. In spiritual solidarity with the 40 Days for Life, a Novena of Masses will be conducted in our Diocese from First Friday, 1 March
2013 through Sunday, 9 March 2013. The Novena Mass at Prince of Peace will be on Thursday, March 7 at 8:30 am
In Birmingham, the 40 Days for Life campaign will take place at Planned Parenthood, 1211 South 27th Place, daily, 6 am – 6 pm. For information about, and registration for, the 40 Days for Life Campaign in Birmingham, call 256.338.7316, or visit www.40daysforlife.com/birmingham.
Subscriptions for One Voice, the weekly Diocesan newspaper, are $17.00 per year. If you are currently receiving the One Voice, you may pay your annual subscription with a check made payable to Prince of Peace and noted for One Voice. You may place that in the contribution basket during Mass. If you are not receiving the One Voice and would like to, please call the church office at 205.822.9125 ext. 10.

Electing a New Pope Catholics throughout the world were surprised by Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement of his plans to resign on February 28 because
of failing health. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415, so the event is nearly unprecedented. The process of electing a
pope is specified by canon law and papal directives.
Cardinals under the age of 80 (currently 117) are eligible to vote in the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel within two weeks after
the office becomes vacant.
The conclave is held in secret and external communication is prohibited. Each day the chapel is scanned for electronic listening
devices.
A nominee must receive at least two-thirds of the vote in order to be elected. If no candidate is elected during the first 30 ballots,
the electors may choose a new pope by a simple majority.
The first ballot is held on the afternoon of the first day of the conclave. Thereafter, two ballots are held each morning and
afternoon. A brief recess may be called after the fifth unsuccessful ballot for discussion and prayer among the electors.
Voting is by paper ballot and, after each vote, the ballots are burned in a stove within the chapel. A chemical that produces black
smoke is burned with the ballots if no one receives the required majority.
A successful candidate is given the opportunity to accept or decline election as pope.
The ballots are then burned without the chemical additive so that the chimney produces white smoke and the bells of St. Peter’s
Basilica proclaim a successful election.
Three sets of white papal vestments (small, medium and large) are on hand and the pope-elect is vested and is asked to reveal the
name he will use as pope.
The new pope is introduced on the balcony of St. Peter’s with the words “Habemus papam” (We have a pope).
A formal installation of the new pope takes place a few days after the conclave.
The Vatican anticipates that a new pope will be elected before Easter. Pope Benedict will then live in retirement and will no longer
exercise papal authority.
