Principal’s Report: Creating a Safe Community

Our orientation week was a success. On Monday and Tuesday, our staff participated in health and safety

orientations to ensure that everyone follows the new safety protocols. We welcomed back our students

with 5 different orientation times over two days. As you can imagine, a lot of thinking and care has gone

into our planning for school wide operation and for classroom instruction. Safety is our number one priority

and I feel very confident in our preparation.

As a school community, we are rethinking what we do and how we do it.

*We are learning to wash our hands, stay in our space and to move in the hallways safely.

*We are learning how to smile with our eyes when we’re wearing a mask.

*We are learning how to work together cooperatively with space between us.

*We are learning how to take care of each other by doing our individual part.

Parents and guardians, you can support your child and our community.

Please remember to do the daily health check with your children every morning before they come to

school. Children should stay home if they answer yes to any of these questions:

• Do you have a cough?

• Do you have congestion?

• Do you have a nasal drip?

• Do you have nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea?

• Is anyone in your household ill? If yes, follow advice of healthcare provider.

Pack your child’s backpack with the following items:

• A healthy snack

• A bottle of water (no juice boxes, pop cans please)

• A healthy school lunch (no lunch program until Sept 21)

• School supplies—to be kept at school

• Notices/planner

• A clean mask (Grade 6/7 must wear masks in the hallways and when outside of their learning group—

two masks wear provided. Kindergarten to Grade 5 can wear a mask if they wish. One reusable mask

will be provided this week.)

Keep personal belongings at home. Due to health and safety protocols, we ask students

to keep their personal belongings at home. This includes toys, skateboards/scooters and

cell phones. Keeping these items at home also ensures that they are not damaged, lost

or stolen. We know that for some older intermediate students cell phones are important

for before and after school communication with parents. If your child must have a cell

phone for safety reasons, it will be locked up by the teacher at the beginning of the

school day and returned to them at the end of the school day. If there is a need for com-

munication during the school day, the office phone is available. We are asking for your

cooperation in ensuring that all of these items are kept at home. If you have any con-

cerns or questions, feel free to contact Ms. Yamamoto.

Dress for the weather. Make sure that they have clothing for outdoor play as we will be

going outside for a minimum of 45 minutes everyday rain or shine.

Practice health and safety protocols at home. Practice washing your hands. Practice

wearing a mask in public spaces. Go to bed early so your children are rested and ready

for school in the mornings. Ensure that your child can independently open their snack

containers, put on their coast and change their shoes.

Follow the staggered arrival and dismissal times. Make space for others by being on time

and leaving right away.

Stay informed. Check our websites on a frequent basis.

https://maywood.burnabyschools.ca/ and https://burnabyschools.ca/ and check for

email message to [email protected]

Be in regular contact with your child’s teacher. They will be communicating with you

through email and through your child’s Microsoft TEAMs account. We are reducing the

number of paper notices that are sent home. There may also be information sent home

through your child’s planner.

Maywood Daily Schedule

In order to reduce the number of students who are coming and going, we have organized

staggered arrival, dismissal, recess and lunch times.

Arrival: Parents, please follow the yellow signs and cones to ensure physical

distancing. Please do not come to school earlier than your arrival time.

Dismissal: At dismissal, please move away from the doors to allow space for the next

group of parents and students. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.

Parking: Unfortunately, due to space, there is no parking on school property for families.

Please do not park in the ‘no parking zones’ including the ‘fire zone’, the loading zones, the

lane, staff parking. Help to reduce the traffic around the school by walking to school or

parking on Imperial, Dow or Gray.

Verification Forms: This week your child will be bringing home some important forms. The first

one is the verification form. Please check that all information is accurate especially your

contact information. The others are permission forms for walking fieldtrips, media consent,

use of technology, earthquake. Please return them to your child’s teacher the next day,
