Breaking Open The Word
Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 25, 2016
First Reading: Amos 6:1a, 4-7 Amos denounces the selfish attitude of those who surround themselves with luxuries with no concern for others. He goes on to warn that because these people lacked interest in the state of their society, they would be the first to be exiled. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Paul tells Timothy to seek integrity, faith and love. Paul urges him to attain everlasting life by maintaining strong faith in Jesus and in God until Jesus returns. Gospel: Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells of a rich man who feasted daily, while a beggar named Lazarus went hungry outside his gates. When both men died, Lazarus was taken to Abraham, but the rich man was in torment. When he begged for mercy, Abraham reminded him that Lazarus had lived in torment, while the rich man lived in selfish luxury. The man then asked if Lazarus could be sent to his brothers to warn them. But Abraham said if they had not heeded Moses or the prophets, they would ignore even the warning of one risen from the dead. Consider/Reflect: The story Jesus tells of poor man Lazarus is not just a story, but tells us of today. The prophet Amos speaks to us, blessed, comfortable, complacent, and satisfied while ignoring others in need. Surely, we are a most charitable people, and we give from our excess. We should examine our ‘wants’ and our ‘needs’. Pope Saint John Paul spoke at Battery Park in New York, telling us that Lazarus is at our door. The sad thing with the rich man was not that he didn’t help; he seemingly did not see the person at his door. As he looked out, he looked past that person, and over to someone nearby. As parents, do we look to the real needs of our children? As adults, does our compassion for the elderly, sick and disturbed cause us pain? How do I treat the sister or brother who begs on our city streets?

“LIVING THROUGH GRIEF” SUPPORT GROUP
Tuesdays
Beginning October 11, 2016 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
St. Theresa Faith Formation Center
Facilitators:Gwen Nolan and Rosemarie Martelli
The death of a loved one is certainly one of life’s most difficult moments. A time of grief and mourning is a normal, natural response to loss of someone you love. Your grief journey is just that, yours. There are no rules or normal time frame. Grief is not a sign of weakness. We respond to grief with all that we are: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The intense reactions of grief can cause pain to the person of even the strongest faith. Though difficult, the journey through the grief process is a necessary one. We believe that when shared, our burdens are lightened. We offer a place to share your concerns and experiences, support others and be supported by others who are going through, or have gone through, this painful journey.
We are offering a support group at St. Theresa’s. This group will meet a total of seven sessions to share experiences of loss. These will be held on: Tuesdays 3:00-4:30 pm beginning October 11, 2016 at St. Theresa’s Faith Formation Center 450 Radio Road Little Egg Harbor. If you have any questions and /or would like to be part of this group, please call Gwen at 609-335-5252.

Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:
the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM
The following is a beautiful prayer written by St. Padre Pio for all of Life's issues from conception to natural death. O Lord, we ask for a boundless confidence and trust in Your Divine Mercy, and the courage to accept the crosses and sufferings which bring immense goodness to our souls and that of Your Church. Help us to love You with a pure and contrite heart, and to humble ourselves beneath Your cross, as we climb the mountain of holiness, carrying our cross that leads to heavenly glory. May we receive You with great faith and love in Holy Communion, and allow You to act in us as You desire for Your greater glory. O Jesus, most adorable Heart and eternal fountain of Divine Love, may our prayer find favor before the Divine Majesty of Your heavenly Father. AMEN
