Your voice will sound the bigger and

mellower, the closer you hold the micro-

phone to your lips.

Moving away rom the microphone will

produce a more reverberant, more distant

sound, as the microphone will pick

more room reverberation. You can thus

change the sound o your voice simply by

changing your working distance. Proxim-

ity eect is a signicant low-requency

boost that occurs when you sing into the

microphone rom less than 2 inches. It

gives more body to your voice and an

intimate, bass-heavy sound.

Application Note:

The radio link

Make sure that your transmitter can see

the receiver rom wherever you are within

the perormance area. Any obstacle

specically, metal objects, walls, and even

the audience will weaken the radio

signal signicantly. Remember all this

during the soundcheck, even i there is no

audience yet

Radio waves are similar to light. Thereore,

always place the receiver clear o any

potential visual obstructions and wear the

bodypack on the guitar strap or on the

outside o your clothes so it can always

see the receiver.

Application Note:

Transmitter audio gain

There is a small screwdriver on the

battery compartment cover. Use it to set

the GAIN control to the point where the AF

CLIP LED on the receiver will only fash

momentarily on signal peaks. This ensures

Application Note:

Vocals: Feedback

Feedback is the result o part o the sound

projected by a speaker being picked up

by a microphone, which sets up a signal

loop. Above a specic system gain setting,

the sound system begins to howl making

the sound engineer dive or the master

ader to reduce the volume and stop the

howling.

To increase usable gain beore eedback,

the AKG P 5/P 5 S has a supercardioid

polar pattern. It is most sensitive to

sounds arriving rom in ront o it (your

voice) while rejecting most o the sound

arriving rom the sides or rear (rom

monitor speakers or instance).

To maximize gain beore eedback, place

the main (FOH) speakers at the ront

edge o the stage, stay behind them, and

be sure never to point any microphone

directly at any speaker.

windscreen. A little care will make themic sound as good as new: Remove the

Application Note:

Miking up kick drums andamps

The kick drum sound will be the punchier

the closer the microphone sits to the

head. For a rounder sound, aim away rom

the beater.

The engineers at the AKG acoustic

research laboratory tested the P 2 with

many dierent kick drums. To get the best

possible sound, they recommend a 3 dB

boost at 70 Hz and a 3 dB cut at 700 Hz

on the EQ (e.g., on the mixer).

To mic up an amp, place the microphone

as close as possible to the speaker. As you

move the microphone toward the center

o the diaphragm, the sound will become

brighter.

Drums: The Groove Pack

The Groove Pack includes all the Percep-

tion Series microphones you need to mic

up a drum kit perectly in a convenient

Miking a grand piano /cottage piano

Miking a grand piano depends to a large

extent on the style (classic, rock, pop) o

the recording. Rule o thumb: point one

(or preerably two) AKG cardioid-type

microphone(s) at the middle strings at a

height o 5 - 6.5 eet (or rock/pop - approx.

8-16 inches). Now vary the positioning o

the microphones and experiment with the

sound pattern. Grand pianos are charac-

terised by a highly complex sound, so that

the tiniest modications o mic positioning

are apt to eect distinct sound changes.

With the MS technique (M stands or Mid

signal, S or Side signal), a cardioid-

type or omnidirectional microphone is

directed head-on at the middle o the

sound source. The side signal is picked up

by another microphone with gure-eight

polar pattern placed at a right angle, as

closely as possible to the rst microphone.

The let-hand channel is generated by

adding the side signal in phase to the mid

Application Note:

Vocal miking or studio use

There is a great dierence in perception

between singing on stage and singing in a

studio with closed headphones. The head-

phones dampen outside noise, thus deliv-

ering a very direct sound. This unamiliarsituation may lead to a somewhat impure

intonation. In such cases, just push one

hal o the headphones a little behind your

ear, so as to improve the audibility o the

direct sound o your own voice.

Application Note:

How to hold a microphone

Microphones with cardioid or hypercar-

dioid polar pattern are the most requentlyused mics on stage. It is very important to

hold the microphone correctly. Take care

not to cover the sound inlet basket with

your hand, as this will have an unavour-

able eect on the polar pattern, while also

increasing eedback risk quite considerably.

Application Note:

Wind noise on percussion

As percussion instruments are beaten

by hand, the rapid movements may give

rise to irritating wind noise. This can be

prevented by installing a windscreen and/

or pop lter between the instrument andthe microphone.

Miking a Rotary Cabinet

Miking with three microphones will

ensure an eminently spatial eect. Pointone microphone at the low-requency

driver rom a distance o about 8 inches.

Place two other microphones at a large

aperture angle so that they are directed at

the high-requency driver rom a distance

o about 8 inches.

Application Note:

Amp Miking

E-bass or guitar are requently picked up

quite dry via a DI Box. By contrast, usinga microphone will also reproduce the

characteristic sound eatures o

amplier, loudspeaker box and space,

thus delivering a more lively sound.

Blending the two signals will requently

ensure optimum results.

Application Note:

Miking an acoustic guitar

Point a large-diaphragm microphone in

the direction o the pick hand so as to

pick up the radiation o the guitar body.

Then place a small-diaphragm micro-

phone in the direction o the ret hand(approx. eleventh ret). In the mix o both

signals, set a wide panning (panorama

let/right), thus achieving an exceptional

spatial sound.
