A Journey of Expectation,Preparation, and Fulfillment

Fasting periods prior to feadays are meant to prepare us for tfeast. Unlike the Great Fast priorPascha (Easter), the Pre Christmfast is seldom practised, and mado not even know of its existencThis is partly because a detailstructure was never established fthis fast. Yet this 40 day prepartion period should be preserved apractised.

This is an ancient fast. TFeast of the Nativity was added the church calendar in Rome in t4th century. The fast was practicas early as 567 AD in various formfor various lengths of time. Eventally it became a 40 day fast thmimics the Great Fast prior to Pacha and was a very strict fast.

The Feasts of the Nativiand the Resurrection are the boo

ends of Christs life on earth. The mystery of the In-carnation is the door to our salvation and Resurrectibrings us new life. The incarnation of God in fle

happens for a purpose. The saving death on the crocasts a shadow back on the birth of the child. For osake long suffering Saviour, You were placed in tanimals manger. This is our focus during this preparation time: the self emptying of God to take the forof a slave, for the salvation of our souls. How mudoes our God love us to do this great deed!

The word fast means not eating all or certaifoods. The purpose of fasting is to remind us of tScriptural teaching, Man does not live by breadalone. The needs of the body are nothing compared

    The Call of Matthew+ F R . T O M G L Y N N

    o f b l e s s e d m e m o r y

atthews fellow Jews despised him. He was acollaborator with the Roman occupational army.He was considered to be a low-life person who

made his fortune on graft and bribes. He was anagent of Herod. A tax collectors money,

considered dirty, would not be acceptedby anyone even as alms. His evidencewould never be accepted in a lawcourt. But Jesus saw beyond ap-pearances. In this unlikely manthere was a person who was a childof God, and one who one daywould become a herald and writerof the Gospel. His call was sudden;it interrupted him in the middle ofhis business. Jesus touched some-thing deep within him. There was an

emptiness waiting to be filled. St. Markwrites, and he (Matthew) rose at onceand followed Jesus (Mark 2:14). WheneverI read this I am struck by the immediacy of Mat-thews response. He simply stood up and walked wayfrom his desk. Money was not collected and put away, the books were not updated, and everything was left as itwas. He walked away from his business in an instant.

Matthew then throws a party. (Matt 9:10)Throwing a party seems to go along with repentance inthe Gospels. Recall the party with music and dancingwhich is given at the return of the Prodigal Son. Jesus isMatthews guest of honor. He also invites his old cro-

nies in crime and many public sinners to this party. Some people had a problem with this. Here is

Jesus with this group of scoundrels, those who neglectreligious laws and the commandments. They are eatingand drinking together. To many it seemed to be a scan-dalous event. Religious Pharisees see the event and liftup their shocked hands. They ask the disciples whydoes your teacher eat with public sinners and tax collec-tors?

Jesus hears the complaint and gives a classic lineout of Matthews Gospel, Those who are well have no

need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go learn what this means I have come not to call righteous, but sinners (Matt.9:12)

It is characteristic of some communeverywhere to shun those who disregard

cepted standards of behavior. In some gious groups the limits of toleranceoutsiders is extremely narrow. churches, at the present moment, having diminishing members, it mbe in part because they have grocomfortable with a group of lminded people and shun outsider. In every generation oucasts are present, those who claim

be disciples of the Good Shephmust seek ways of reaching out

drawing them into the community.Matthews call and conversion afected the way he wrote his Gospel accoun

Jesus. He saw the Kingdom of God as being a gfeast. Maybe he remembers the great dinner partyfirst had with Jesus. He saw Christ extending table lowship with those considered outcasts to be continin their acceptance into the Church community.

His Gospel extols the attitude of spiritual povand counsels us who read this Gospel that our salvadepends upon the quality of our mercy toward needy.

All of this is brought together in the 25th cha

of his gospel account of the Final Judgment each omust undergo. He gives us these words of Jesus, asyou did to the least of my brothers, you did it to Meprayer to the Mother of God during the Christmas Fa

All holy Bride of God, you alone have carriedyour womb the God whom no space can contwhen He was made man in His goodness. So Itreat you to drive away the evils that surroundon all sides, that following the straight and narpath, I may find the way that leads life. (Morning Prayer)

As Jesus was passing on, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the taxoffice, and Jesus said to him, Follow me, and he rose and followed Him

the needs of the soul. Above all else, we need God,who provides everything for both the body and thesoul. Fasting teaches us to depend on God more fully. The first sin of our parents, Adam and Eve, was eatingfrom the forbidden tree (Genesis 3:1-19). We fast fromfood, or a food item, as a reminder that we are to fastfrom sinning and doing evil.

Ukrainian Catholics refer to the pre-Christmasfast period as Pylypiwka or St. Philip's Fast, as it al-ways begins on November 15th, the day after the feast

of St. Philip the Apostle. It ends on December 24thaccording to the Gregorian Calendar. Fasting is a callfor conversion directed to our body, and fasting has thespecial consequence of putting things into proper per-spective. It is a process by which we become free fromand independent of all material things. And as we freeourselves from things outside of ourselves, we also freeourselves from the passions within us that are keepingour interior life in chains. This new freedom will makeroom in our body for new values.

Therefore, fasting liberates us from a kind of

bondage and sets us free to enjoy happiness. It is iportant to approach the fasting with the right attitudedoes not make sense to abstain from meat on Fridonly to go out to an elegant lobster dinner. It is essetial that an inner fast accompany the outer fast.

Fasting involves not just food, but the entbeing. Our mouths should fast from off-color, offensior hurtful words. Our eyes should fast from things thshouldnt see, perhaps movies or television programsthat do not promote Christian values. Our ears shou

fast from listening to things they shouldnt, like gossiand music that goes against moral integrity. Our minshould fast from thoughts that arent compatible withour lives as Christians. Constant activities and a hecpace of life are the enemies of a healthy spiritual liOne of the ways that we can fast in this season is to go of our frenzied pace of life. We need to take timesit at the feet of the Lord and dwell in His presence. Lus approach this season of preparation in the hope ththis time allows us to experience a new awareness Gods presence, and our need for God.
