It's bicycle season. Its also skateboard, scooter and roller blade season. In New York State the law requires that until the age of 14 your child must wear a helmet, not just for riding a bike but also for riding a scooter, a skateboard or when using roller blades. Onondaga County has
gone a step further and a helmet is required for these activities until the age of 18!
Consider the following facts:
• Each year, about 54 New York State residents are killed in bicycle crashes. • Each year, about 2,000 New York State residents are hospitalized due to bicycle-related
injuries. Of these hospitalizations, approximately 38 percent involve a brain injury. • Head injury is the leading cause of death and permanent disability in bicycle crashes. Head
injuries account for more than 60 percent of bicycle-related deaths, more than two-thirds of bicycle-related hospital admissions, and about one-third of hospital emergency department visits are for bicycling injuries.
Why wear helmets?
• Professional and amateur athletes in many sports wear helmets. Football, hockey and even baseball players wear helmets. Cyclists need protection for the special risks they face, too.
• Brain injuries are usually the most serious injuries a bicycle rider will sustain. Helmets prevent many of these injuries or reduce their severity.
• Studies in the U.S. and elsewhere have shown that bike riders wearing helmets are less likely to suffer brain injuries than those who don't.
• Bicycles, even when in the hands of young children, can be rapidly moving vehicles, easily reaching speeds of 20 miles per hour or more.
The Helmet Program, in coordination with the Onondaga County Bicycle Safety Coalition and the Safety Council of Central and Western New York, provides low cost bicycle helmets to the community. Helmets can be purchase for $6 and $10 depending on income and family size. Call the safety council of Central and Western New York at 315-431-9583 for various sale locations throughout the county.
Also, keep an eye out for SUNY Upstate Medical University at various festivals and events throughout the year as they often have bicycle helmet giveaways.

BIG SISTERS Contact: Nicole Kopiasz & Lori Murphy We offer a "Big Sister" to paid MMM members that are pregnant and/or are new moms of multiples during the first 3 months after giving birth. We pair you up with a member that has multiples like you have (or will have). The idea is for the big sister to check in with her little sister often— to offer support, advice, help, etc. as needed. Then she reports to the group at each meeting on how her "little sister" is doing. The little sister can also contact her big sister as needed. Please contact Nicole or Lori to get hooked up with a "big sister" today! If your multiples are over a year old and are interested in becoming a “big sister” contact the committee today.
