The word "angel" mea"messenger" and this word epresses the nature of angelic se

vice to the human race. From tdays of man's life in paradimankind has known of their extence, and its almost universrecognition is reflected not onin Judaism but in most other acient religions as well.

By their nature, angels aactive spirits endowed with reson, will and knowledge; thserve God, fulfill the will of HProvidence and praise Him. Th

are incorporeal spirits, and bcause they belong to the invisibworld, cannot be seen by our boily eyes. St. John of Damascwrites: "When it is the will God that angels should appear those who are worthy, they do nappear as they are in their esence, but, transformed, take such an appearance as to be vi

ble to physical eyes." In the book of Tobit, the angaccompanying Tobit and his son says of himself: "A

Andrey Sheptytsky saw the outbreak of war as awindow for escape from the atheistic bolshevism. The Vermachts quick progress eastward and theproclamation of Ukraines sovereignty in Lviv cre-

ated an illusion that a new era had begun. The Met-ropolitan genuinely greeted the start of the buildingof a Ukrainian State and agreed to join the Senate(the Council of Seniors set up in Lviv in July1941). Yet, the feast of freedom did notlast Massive arrests of the initiators ofthe sovereignty revival by Gestapo offi-cers killed all hopes. The Nazis startedmanipulating Sheptytskys reputationfrom day one of the occupation. To mini-mize the effect of his statement dated 1July, 1941, where the Metropolitan supported the

building of a Ukrainian State, they published a newpastoral letter on his behalf on 5 July which lookedmore loyal to Germany, and was supposedly basedon a non-existent diocese newsletter of July1941.

In his attempts to save at least some forms ofpolitical life for his nation under occupation, Met-ropolitan Andrey helped establish the UkrainianNational Council in 1941 on the basis of a Councilof Seniors. It also, did not live long. In February1942 Sheptytskys sharp protest addressing

Himmler where he judged the massive killings oJews drove the Reichsfuhrer-SS so mad that he ordered his men to disseminate the Council. Three ex-perts in Ukrainian issues were sent to moderate An

drey Sheptytsky, including Hans Koch, Otto Vechter, and Alfred Bizanz. However, their conversation ended up a complete disaster. The old Metro-politan scolded the visitors for how they treated the

conquered nation. The offended Nazis saidthe hereditary Count and aristocrat hadbad manners To scare the Metropoli-tan, the Nazis searched his chambers look-ing for weapons. In response to this terrorand abuse of power Sheptytsky began tosave the Jews who lived in Halychyna. He

hid hundreds of Jewish children, dozens of rabbis

and scrolls with Torah texts in his personal cham-bers at Sviatoyurska Hora, St. George Hill in Lvivmonasteries, church hospitals and orphanages. TheMetropolitan risked the devastation of his church bustill gave shelter to the persecuted Jews.

In the surge of WWII in late November 1942Andrey Sheptytsky published an angry letter titledThou Shall Not Kill which came like thunder outof the clear blue sky. When blood shedding becamea routine solution to any political problems and mil-lions of people were turned into executioners and

Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, Roman at birth, was the leader of the Ukrain-ian Greek Catholic Church for almost 44 years. He found respect with every newgovernment coming to power in Halychyna in the turbulent early 20thcentury

    continued from lastweeks issue.

victims, the Metropolitan warned everyone en-croaching on the life of others that Gods punish-ment and anathema would find them. He was par-ticularly critical about the struggle of Ukrainiannationalist organizations against each other, label-ing it fratricide and demanding that the mutual vio-lence be stopped and a compromise be found forthe sake of Ukraine. As he did not see the ways to

implement political ideals of the nation, Metropoli-tan Sheptytsky desperately longed for bringing tolife the principles of religious unity. He wrote let-ters to Orthodox Christians, both the clergyand intellectuals; sent his prieststo the Great Ukraine; and tried togo to Kyiv to start the unity cam-paign. However, the Germangovernment and stubborn short-sightedness of Orthodox Churchleaders hindered all his attempts.

Following his parishIn 1944 Metropolitan Shep-tytsky stayed in Lviv after yetanother shuffle of government,he did not flee to the West ashundreds of thousands Ukraini-ans did. The realm of the sec-ond wave of the soviets some-what differed from September1939. A lingering, and initiallyfailing war, with Germany madeStalin and his circle change theirstrategy towards the Church. The

Communist rulers realized howsignificant religion was in sup-porting the moral stability of theRed Army, so they liberalizedtheir Church policy but, ofcourse, took the Russian Ortho-dox Church; the only one theytolerated and authorized, undertheir complete control.

Sheptytsky saw these changes and hoped thatthe warming with regard to the Church would giveGreek Catholics a chance to survive in the USSR.

The old Metropolitan heard news about Red Armytroops and officers no longer being intimidated orafraid to enter churches, visit sermons, ask priestsfor blessings, and wear crosses and medallions. Po-litical instructors stopped mocking religious senti-ments in the army; the new soviet administrationwas perfectly tolerant towards the Church and evenallowed nuns and monks to take care of the injured.Andrey Sheptytsky thought it was possible to find aformula for the Church to co-exist with the govern-ment if they did not interfere with one another, just

as he had struggled to live with the Polish and Ger-man governments. He realized that the new regimeexpected two key things from him - an officialpledge of loyalty through support in the struggleagainst Nazism, and assistance in oppressing armedinsurgents.

At the Synod of the Greek Catholic Clergy on 7September 1944, Metropolitan Sheptytsky an-

nounced that the Nazis forced Ukrainians into theGalicia Ukrainian Division and the Church could notbut allow its chaplains to follow its believers. Yet,

the most important signal to the government washis judgment of punishment without proper

investigation or trial practiced bythe UPA, the Ukrainian InsurgentArmy. Sheptytsky conceded asmuch as he possibly could underthose circumstances by criticizinggroundless blood shedding andhinting that the armed insurgentstruggle against the governmenthad no future and could only ag-gravate repressions. Obviously, theMetropolitan began to realize moreclearly that the Bolsheviks wereonly using him for their own inter-ests. Before he died on 31 October1944, the Metropolitan spoke thewords of prophesy to his closestcircle: The Bolsheviks will de-stroy and devastate our Church, but you should tolerate it dontbetray your faith, your holy Catho-

lic Church. The difficult experi-ence that will fall on our Church istemporary. I can see our Churchrevived. It will be more beautifuland glorious than before and willembrace our entire nation. After his last speech, Metropolitan

Sheptytsky did not say another word until hisdeath at 1:30 p.m. on 1 November 1944. Re-

membering the reputation of the late Metropolitan, the Bolsheviks allowed a ceremonial funeral. InJanuary 1945 a delegation of the Ukrainian Greek

Catholic Church visited Kyiv and Moscow. Thedelegates were assured that the government wouldnot touch the Church. However, when the Bolshe-viks failed to force the new Metropolitan Josyf Slipyto officially call on the underground insurgent fight-ers to lay down their arms in February that sameyear, let alone assist in convincing insurgents to startnegotiations of capitulation, the regime launched acomplete destruction of the Greek Catholic Church. The last words Andrey Sheptytsky said before hisdeath turned out to be a prophecy.

incorporeal spirits, they are less confineby space and place than men, and can travdistances of, to us, inconceivable vastnewith lightning speed, to appear where it necessary for them to act. However, it is impossible to say that they are totally indpendent of limitations of space and place, othat they could be omnipresent. Holy Scripture depicts angels as descending fromheaven to earth, or ascending from earth t

heaven, which gives us reason to believthat they cannot be on earth and in heaven the same time.

Immortality is one of the qualities oangels, as we are given clear evidence iHoly Scripture, which teaches that they cannot die (Luke 20:36). However, their immortality is not divine (that is, independenand unconditional), but depends, like thimmortality of human souls, completely othe will and mercy of God.
