oxygen-ion-conducting solid body elec- trolyte as a second measured value and by a third measurement device from the fur- nace chamber temperature as the third measured value. METHOD OF ASSEMBLING A GAS-INSULATING POWER

TRANSMISSION LINE WITH OUTER CLOSURE OF CARBON STEEL AND

ALUMINUM

Alan H Cookson assigned to Westing- house Electric Carp

A gas-insulated power transmission line includes an outer enclosure containing an inner conductor and insulating supports for insulatably supporting the inner con- ductor within the outer enclosure. An electrically insulating gas electrically in- sulates the inner conductor from the outer enclosure. The outer enclosure is com- prised of two separate components; an outer sheath made of carbon steel, a grounded inner sheath disposed within the outer sheath and made of aluminum. The inner sheath, containing the inner conduc- tor and the insulating supports, is assem- bled separately from the outer sheath and then the inner sheath assemblage is in- serted within the outer sheath at the final field location.

DECREASING CARBON BLACK REACTOR FOULING RATE

Paul J Sheng assigned to Phillips Petroleum Company

The rate at which deposits are formed in carbon black reactors is reduced by feed- ing a contaminant rich feed oil stream into the reactor surrounded by a substan- tially contaminant free feed oil stream.

PROCESS FOR PREPARING SPHERICAL CARBON MATERIAL

AND SPHERICAL ACTIVATED CARBON

Kaj Hisatsugu; Kazuhiro Watanabe; Iwaki, Japan; assigned to Kureha Kagaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha

Spherical carbon material or a spherical activated carbon is prepared from an ad- mixture of pitch, amorphous carbon and a viscosity-~ontroliing agent by the pro- cess comprising the step of heating and extruding the admixture into strings, cool- ing and cutting the string into fragments, introducing the fragments into hot water to obtin spherical particles of the admix- ture, removing the viscosity-controlling agent from the spherical particles, in- fusibilizing the spherical particles and car- bonizing the spherical particles and fur- ther activating the carbonized spherical carbon particles.

Device and process for operation of open baking furnaces, in particular such ring- type furnaces for manufacturing anodes for the aluminium electrolytic process, are such that for each so called fire the sealing chamber and/or chamber in the cooling zone can be saved in that the flue gas ex- haust manifold is not situated on the headwall but instead on the flue and/or the opening of that headwall on which the last fresh air supply manifold is situated is closed off by a sliding baffle. Openings corresponding in cross section to that of the connected part of the flue gas exhaust manifold are provided in the region of the flues. The advantage of the process lies in the greater flexibility in furnace opera- tion, which results either in an increase in production or an increase in product quality.

BOBBIN FOR USE IN PRODUCING A MESOPHASE PITCH DERIVED

CARBON YARN

David A Schulz assigned to Union Car- bide Corporation

A bobbin capable of retaining thermoset yarn during a heat treatment to pyrolyze and carbonize the thermoset yarn to pro- duce a good quality carbon yarn, com- prises a cylindrical body made of selected materials; and a layer of carbon felt posi- tioned on the outside surface of the cylin- drical body to receive the thermoset yarn and to minimize stress between the cylin- drica1 body and the thermoset yarn during the heat treatment.

METHOD FOR REMOVING CARBON BLACK DEPOSITS

Paul J Cheng assigned to Phillips Petroleum Company

Combustion gases containing free oxygen and a carbonaceous feed are introduced into a carbon black reactor, with the com- bustion gases being at a temperature suffi- cient to pyrolyze the feed hydrocarbon to produce combustion products containing particulate carbon black. The combustion products are cooled by quenching to form a gaseous effluent containing particulate carbon black. The effluent is discharged from the reactor to an indirect heat ex- change means for further cooling the ef- fluent. Carbon black pellets are intro- duced into the effluent inlet of the indirect heat exchange means for removing carbon black which has become deposited on sur- faced defining the flow path or flow paths for the effluent flowing through the heat exchange means. The effluent after cool- ing in the indirect heat exchange means is passed to separating means for separating the effluent into a gaseous portion and a particulate carbon black portion. There- after, the particulate carbon black portion can be pelleted.
