1. Introduction

Being established on 16/06/1996 by Four young entrepreneurs with a vision of

creating a famous coffee trademark, Trung Nguyen has quickly created its reputation and

brand name and became the most familiar Vietnamese coffee brand to consumers both in

Vietnam and abroad.

Within 10 years, from a small coffee company in the middle of the coffee capital of

Buon Me Thuot, Trung Nguyen has developed into a powerful corporation with six member

companies: Trung Nguyen JSC, Trung Nguyen instant coffee JSC, Trung Nguyen Coffee

Company Ltd, G7 JSC and Vietnam Global Gateway (VGG). The major industries include

manufacturing, trade tea, coffee, franchising and distribution services, modern retail. In the

future, Trung Nguyen Corporation want to develop with 10 member diversification

companies.

Trung Nguyen has a network of nearly 1,000 coffee shops across the country and

franchised shops in eight foreign countries such as USA, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, China,

Cambodia, Poland, Ukraine.

Trung Nguyen coffee products and G7 instant coffee has been exported to 43

countries around the world with major markets such as the U.S. and China. Besides, the

corporation has also built a system of more than 1,000 G7Mart stores across the country.

This report will identify the nature of the company, its responsibilities as well as the

inpact of the economic social and global environment in which Trung Nguyen Group

operate.

8

Page 9: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

2. Trung Nguyen’s mission, vision, value

2.1) Vision

Vision statement of Trung Nguyen is “To become a major force in boosting the

Vietnamese economy; To uphold stability of the national economy; To partake in the estab-

lishment of a Great Vietnam, with hopes of discovering and conquering new ideals”. In this

statement, it clearly state what Trung Nguyen want to become in future – “a major force in

boosting the Vietnamese economy”. (according to

http://www.trungnguyen.com.vn/en/default.aspx?c=157#content)

2.2) Mission

A mission statement is a brief description of a organization’s fundamental purpose

in society. It is an answer for the question "Why do we exist?”, a simple statement of the

company’s reason for being. The mission statement of Trung Nguyen is “Creating the

leading brand is carried out by bringing to everyone drinking coffee a source of creative

inspiration and pride of Trung Nguyen’s style that is rich in Vietnamese culture”.(

according to http://www.trungnguyen.com.vn/en/default.aspx?c=157#content)

2.3) Trung nguyen’s Corporate Values:

Inspired Creativity: Creativity is one of the many values Trung Nguyen encour-

ages among its valued consumers and employees.

Develop and protect our brand: Every member has a responsibility of building,

expanding, maintaining and protecting the Trung Nguyen trademark.

Consumer's Orientation: Consumer satisfaction is the top priority in every activ-

ity and the target goal.

Build our success upon our partner's success: A good partnership is based on

belief, respect, and equality. The success of a partner is the success of the whole

Trung Nguyen group.

Develop strong human resource: Providing proper benefits-- both material and

spiritual needs through training and developing opportunities for its employees.

Base on effectiveness.

Promote social responsibility and community development: Actively contribut-

ing to the welfare of the community and the development of society.

(according to http://www.trungnguyen.com.vn/en/default.aspx?c=157#content)

9

Page 10: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

It can be seen that these values are reflected clearly in the company’s vision and

mission statement itself. It does not only shape the direction towards which the company

steers but also the spirit and culture that the company’s personnel work in.

2.4) Key objectives

In order to achieve its mission, Trung Nguyen sets out a set of short and long term

objectives which are more concrete and measurable:

Dominating the domestic market and conquering the international market.

Moving from the width to the depth.

Investing in coffee industry.

Developing internal and international franchise system.

(according to http://www.trungnguyen.com.vn/en/default.aspx?c=156#content)

3. Stakeholder

While vision, mission, values and objectives set the direction for a company,

stakeholders is the one that shapes and directly influences these features. According to

Johnson, Scholes and Whittington (2006) define stakeholders as “individuals or groups who

depend on the organisation to fulfil their own goals and on whom, in turn, the organisation

depends” (Exploring Corporate Strategy, p. 165). Having no exception, Trung Nguyen

Group affect and are affected by different stakeholders.

3.1) Influence of the stakeholder

We can divide Trung Nguyen Corporation’s stakeholder into three types: internal,

connected and external stakeholders. And each types have different levels of influence on

Trung Nguyen Corporation development.

Fig. 1 categorizing stakeholders.

Stakeholders

Internal stakeholder

Connected stakeholder

External stakeholder

10

Page 11: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

Internal stakeholders are the ones working inside the company. They are closely

connected to the company and their objectives are most likely to have strong influence on

how the company is operated. This group of stakeholders includes employees and

managers/directors of the company, those who are interested in the company’s continuation

and growth, can influence the company from the inside and will directly influence the

quality of jobs done in the company.

Connected stakeholder is the group of stakeholders who are usually connected to the

company on a contractual basis. This group of stakeholders consists of shareholders,

customers, suppliers and banks/finance providers. They mostly influence the company

through the distribution of company resources such as capital, raw materials etc and profit

and production cost the company will generate.

External stakeholder is the broadest group of stakeholders which includes

government, community, pressure groups, trade unions etc with diverse objectives and

varying ability to influence the company’s direction. This group of stakeholders usually

influences the company from the outside and more often than not will affect the overall

strategies and direction of the company rather than detailed plans and projects.

A useful method used to assess and analyze how influential stakeholders is

stakeholder mapping. In the Power/Interest matrix below, stakeholders are categorized on a

graph rating their level of interest against the power they possess to exercise those interests.

The stakeholders in this way are broadly divided into four groups; low interest/low power

(A), high interest/low power (B), low interest/high power (C) and high interest/high power

(D).

C: Keep satisfied

D: Key Player

A: Minimal effort B: Keep

informed

Power/ influence

Interest/ aspirationLow High

Low

High

Fig. 3: Stakeholders mapping

11

Page 12: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

As seen in Fig. 3, the most influential groups of stakeholders in Trung Nguyen

Corporation are A and B while groups C and D, despite having a certain level of interest on

the company, have little power to influence the course of the company. For a customer

orientated company like Trung Nguyen Corporation, the customer is a strong force that the

company’s management have to take into consideration. Customers are likely to fall into

group B since they share a strong interest in the quality of the company’s products and

services. The power of the customers is emphasized by the obvious fact that without

customers, Trung Nguyen will lose its market and thus will cease to exist after a period of

continuing losses.

Therefore, it is obvious that whichever direction or plan Trung Nguyen’s

management is going to take, they have to take into consideration the influence of

stakeholders. They may regard one group of stakeholders higher than another, but after all,

they can’t ignore any group.

3.2) Achievement of stakeholder’s objectives

Different stakeholder groups have different objectives in a organization.

ent

- Compliance with laws and regulations- Efficient use of resources-Employment- Contribution to the national economy- Payment of taxes

As seen from the table, the objectives of employees are listed as job security, good

working conditions, and fair treatment, health and safety and promotion prospects. At the

moment, Trung Nguyen has nearly 2000 staffs working in 3 departments, 2 factories and 5

branches and more than 15,000 employers through its 1000 franchises in Vietnam. In order

to achieve these objectives, Trung Nguyen Group considers job security as the most

important factor for their staff. Since Human resource is company’s most important capital,

of Trung Nguyen Corporation’s managements are always interested to listen to supportable

ideas of staffs to help create a good working conditions and fair treatment to motivate its

worker.

Customers always concern about the price, the quality and the value of goods that they

purchase as well as service after sale. In order to satisfy this, Trung Nguyen had develop a

modern management system and customers service system. The company often opens

several special events for clients such as “Customer conference”, “Customer Day”, etc. and

special occasions, customers always receive gifts or discounted products for using Trung

Nguyen’s products or services. Furthermore, Trung Nguyen had launch variety product

lines to fit its customers’ taste and interest. They had Weasel coffee, numbered Creative

Coffee with different level, Passiona for women, Espresso, Blend coffee and so on. Last but

not least, the manufacturer information is clearly printed in the product packets.

Government and the general public concern about the organization’s relevant law

and regulations requirements satisfaction as well as contributing to local community,

4. Trung Nguyen Corporation’s responsibility

Organization is part of human society, therefore it has many obligations towards the

people or group of people and the environment in the society.

“The social responsibilities of an organization may be defined as the obligations that

the organization has towards the people and the environment in which the company

operate” (Bpp, p.48). When doing business, organization have to take notice of social

responsibility as well as making profit to return its stakeholders. Thus, the corporation make

social commitment, for example, Trung Nguyen must ensure that their business do not harm

to ecological environment. For example building green coffee metropolis project which is

friendly with environment. And Trung Nguyen provide good quality product to meet

customers’ need. Furthermore, millions of employees are recruited annually by the

company. That is an effective using strategy as well as providing work opportunity for the

locals and farmers. Trung Nguyen also obey the law and policy given by government to

avoid damaging the society.

Nowadays, environmentally friendly is quite important reason why consumers

chose a products or goods beside its quality, design and cost. The manufacture must follow

environment policies. There are a lot of environment elements that the company must

consider, such as land, water, air, etc that is limited. In its business development process ,

Trung Nguyen is committed to the implementation of pro-active sustainable activities such

as the environmental preservation with full consciousness of the importance of its corporate.

Trung Nguyen Group has to minimize the resources are used as much as possible.

Fig. 4. Organization’s responsibilities

15

Page 16: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

Business ethics is the behavior of a business show how they interacts with the world

at large and to their one-on-one dealings with a single customer. To some people, making

money or profit is their only interest. Making money is not wrong in itself. It is the manner

in which the businesses conduct themselves that is questionable of ethical behavior. As one

of their value state “Consumer satisfaction is the top priority in every activity and the target

goal”, Trung Nguyen always put customers' benefits in top piority. Responding to the

campaign “Vietnamese use Vietnam’s products, Trung Nguyen launched different lines of

coffee’s products in different prices and with the best quality possible.

5. Vietnamese economic system

Vietnamese economic system is a mixed economy or a market economy by socialist

orientation. According to Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, the President of the National Assembly,

Vietnamese economy is in the transition from a fully command economy to a market

economy under the influence of socialism.

There are some main characteristics of the Vietnam economic system that will

determine how resources will be allocated and used. Firstly, the mechanism of this

economic system is basically a free market under the regulation and control of a socialist

government. The socialist orientation will be apparent when the Vietnamese government

tries to achieve economic growth together with development in education, culture while

preserving the traditional values of the country. For example, even though the Vietnamese

government encourages tourism, it has certain policies preventing excessive exploitation of

historical or heritage sites and measures to maintaining them at the same time so as to

protect the Vietnamese culture

6. The impact of social welfare and industrial policy initiatives on the organization

and the wider community

6.1) Social welfare

Social welfare policies set out by the Vietnamese government are to protect and

directly improve citizens’ living standard. As a socialist orientation country, the Vietnamese

government made the minimum standard of living for all of its citizens a primary task. From

2011 to 2020, the government will try to address the issues in three main areas: labour

markets, social insurance and poverty reduction. According to Decree No. 97/2009/ND-CP

and Decree No. 98/2009/ND-CP the government increased the minimum wage to 730,000

VND from 50,000 VND which will push up the labour cost for the company. Also,

16

Page 17: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

Vietnamese Labour Law 1994, last edited in 2007 stated that employees must have the right

to be provided health insurance the company. Trung Nguyen will have to increase its labour

costs in providing its employees with protection from not only professional diseases and

accidents but also other risks such as losing jobs, becoming pregnant etc. On the other hand,

according to the Vice Minister for Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA)

Nguyen Thanh Hoa, the government will try to put into practice the policies regarding

providing of unemployment benefits to the unemployed. This is good news for Trung

Nguyen as it will not have to worry about straining its budget to buy insurance which also

covers the risk of losing jobs for its employees. Therefore, the employees and the trade

union of Trung Nguyen will be able to feel more secured about the workers’ source of

income if they are to be unemployed.

6.2) Inductrial policy

Coffee production in Vietnam began from early 20th century. Up to now, over 100

years have passed but the coffee industry has only just actually developped both in

widening of area and raising of output capacity for recent 30 years. In 2001 Vietnam’s

Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) lifted its ban on new coffee export deals, but

increased the floor pricefor exports from $450 a ton to $480 - $500 a ton. Vietnamese

coffee industry’s production has risen 100 times and became the second largest producer

country in the world. According to BIM, due to rain and frost, the production in 2008 has

decrease by 13,9% compare to the production in 2007. In 2009, the production has increase

by 7,3% compare to the production in 2008. BIM forecast that in 2010, the production will

continua decrease due to rain and frost. And according to Vicofa, the total production in

2010 will be less than the production in 2009 due to the impact of the Ketsana storm in the

end of September – 2010 and the Mirinae storm in the beginning of November - 2010.

And since the end of 2008, the price of coffee in market has been unstable, it was very

difficult for Trung Nguyen as well as many other Coffee export company. In the meeting

about buying and stockpile of coffee, Vicofa suggest the government to consider a special

policy about lending money to the coffee company to buy 200000 ton of coffee from

farmers every year. And in early Marth 2010, Vietnamese companies have begun buying

coffee on the domestic market in a plan to stockpile200,000 tonnes for nine months to shore

up prices. This will help raising the price of Vietnamese coffee in the market. According to

a report from Bloomberg, in September 2010, VINACAFE will invest 2,5 billion VND to

plan new coffee plant and dispose of the old one, in order to increase the production of

17

Page 18: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

coffee. All of this policy will help Trung Nguyen increase their profit as well as improve

farmers’s living standard.

7. The impact of macro economic policy measures and the influence of the global

economy on the company and its stakeholders

7.1) The influence of the macro economic policy

There are two main sets of macro-economic policy that the Vietnamese government

enforces in order to influence level of economic activities within a country: fiscal and

monetary policy. And it is obvious that these two types of policy will definitely have an

impact on the coffee manufacture industry in general and Trung Nguyen Corporation in

particular.

The government used Fiscal policy to directly influence the level of economic

activities in a country with two main tools: Taxation (T) and Government

spending/expenditure (G). Due to the recent global economic crisis, in 2009, Vietnamese

government is still trying to recover its economy by increasing State budget and reducing

tax at the same time as part of the stimulus package. However, on October 2009, the

government has decided to end this stimulus package tax cuts and exemption programs

except for the interest rate subsidy of 2% for medium and long term loads which will end at

the end of 2010. They plan to increase their spending on social welfare programs and other

socioeconomic issues. This growing budget deficit potentially can cause inflation in the

country, leading to higher prices for Trung Nguyen products and services . And, in 2010

corporate income tax is reduced to 25%. This tax rate helps Trung Nguyen to increase

profits, higher dividends to satisfy shareholders and staffs can also receive high salary. The

decision 481/QD-TTg was given out from 15/4 to 15/7/2010, Guidelines for temporary

storage of coffee capital support to businesses and keep market prices, 13 enterprises

designated loans at subsidized interest rate of 6% per annum for a period not exceeding 6

months . This support from government will helped Trung Nguyen Group to be able to

invest more in its manufacturing activities .

Monetary policy is a set of policies the government used to influence the level of

economic activities in the country by controlling either the interest rate or the money supply

within the economy. Loansfrom banks is very important for finance issues of almost every

companies including Trung Nguyen Corporation. The high interest rate will decrease in

GDP. Vietnamese government adjusts interest rate at 8% which will help our economy to

prevent inflation. In addition, exchange rate is an advantage for Trung Nguyen since it

18

Page 19: 43494059 BE A1 ThuyLinhBui

export coffee. And according to economics’ status, the banks will decide whether they

increase or decrease the supply of money to the Group.

7.2) The influence of the global economy

Right after Vietnam speed up the global economic integration, especially when

Vietnam participated into AFTA and Vietnamese government negotiated to joint to WTO,

enterprises’ leaders and other stakeholders were aware deeply that they would not only have

more opportunities but would also face with many challenges. Those companies recognized

that international integration results in more opportunities and advantages in penetrating

into global market. And Trung Nguyen is one of those companies. However, it also increase

the competition in domestic market. This competition results from import goods and foreign

investors.

8. Conclution

All in all, this report this report shows basic information about Trung Nguyen

Corporation. Vision, mission, values, and key objectives of the company is identify.

Besides, the influence, objectives of three stakeholders and the responsibilities of this

company are also evaluated clearly as well as figures out the economic, social and global

environment in which Trung Nguyen Group operates.
