HOSANNA! “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). With these words the Church enters the holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried out with their “hosannas,” they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant “Pray, save us.” The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in him.

¡HOSANNA! “¡Viva el Hijo de David! ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor! ¡Hosanna en el cielo!” (Mateo 21:9). Con estas palabras la Iglesia entra en la semana más santa cuando conmemora la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Cristo. Cuando el pueblo de Jerusalén gritó sus “hosannas”, estaba usando un antiguo grito de aclamación hebreo que significa “sálvanos ahora”. El rey a quien se lo gritaban los salvaría, pero de una manera que sobrepasó sus expectativas. La salvación vendría del madero de la cruz del cual colgaba Jesús

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD / DOMINGO DE RAMOS “DE LA PASIÓN DEL SEÑOR”

The journey of Lent brings us to an encounter with the cross. During Lent, we have been led more deeply into questions at the heart of our faith: Who is God? And who are we, the Church? The Gospel of Matthew indicates that, in the crucifixion, God’s true nature is most fully revealed in Jesus. In Jesus, God is the self-emptying One, who embraces humility and suffers rejection, as Paul tells the Philippians. God’s power is redefined, present not in coercion and violence, but in Jesus’ unbounded love. We the Church can learn who we are, the followers of the Crucified One, when we bear crosses that offer life and hope to the world. We more fully become the Church when we empty ourselves by sharing in others’ sufferings, rejecting violence, and taking risks for justice and reconciliation. Like Jesus, we may reveal God’s power as compassion and mercy.

ENDURING HOPE Today’s passage from Isaiah presents us with a common human dilemma: what do we do with our suffering? The speaker describes himself as God’s faithful servant, who suffers beatings and mockery. We can’t be sure who the speaker is, but we can see his extraordinary response. He chooses not to fight back, not to respond to violence with violence. He chooses to endure with hope that God, in God’s own way, will deliver and vindicate him. Christians later saw this passage as a poignant description of Jesus’ suffering in his passion. We all have many experiences of tragic or undeserved suffering. We might desire to run from our pain, or to inflict suffering upon others, or to live in despair. In faith, we are invited to share in the suffering of Jesus, sharing also with all who suffer similarly. We can place our wounds in God’s hands. We may live in enduring hope that Christ is indeed present and accompanies us in our pain. In God’s own way, our suffering may be transformed, so to serve God’s purposes. A NEW KINGDOM The Gospel of Matthew, using various symbols from scripture, presents Jesus as the true and victorious king who begins a new kingdom. After his royal en-trance into Jerusalem, Jesus ascends his scandalous and paradoxical throne, the cross. The cross reveals the nature of his kingdom, based on God’s forgiveness and sacrificial love. Evil forces thrive when violence stirs even more violence. By accepting his suffering and offering forgiveness, Jesus broke the primary cycle of violence. The Gospels proclaim that the powers of evil, though continuing their effects today, were decisively defeated on the cross.

El viaje de Cuaresma nos lleva a un encuentro con la cruz. Durante la Cuaresma, hemos sido conducidos más profundamente a preguntas en el corazón de nuestra fe: ¿Quién es Dios? ¿Y nosotros, la iglesia, quienes somos? El evangelio de Mateo indica que, en la crucifixión, la verdadera naturaleza de Dios se revela más plenamente en Jesús. En Jesús, Dios, es el que se vacía, abraza la humildad y sufre rechazo, como Pablo le dice a los Filipenses. UN NUEVO REINO El Evangelio de Mateo, usando varios símbolos de las Escrituras, presenta a Jesús como el verdadero y victorioso rey que comienza un nuevo reino. Después de su entrada real a Jerusalén, Jesús asciende a un trono paradójico y escandaloso, la cruz. La cruz revela la naturaleza de su reino, basado en el perdón de Dios y su amor expiatorio. Las fuerzas del mal prosperan cuando la violencia suscita más violencia. Al aceptar su sufrimiento y al ofrecer perdón, Jesús rompe el circulo primario de la violencia. Los evangelios proclaman que las fuerzas del mal, aun cuando continúan sus efectos hasta hoy, fueron derrotados en la cruz. Update - 3/28/2020 - BISHOP JAIME SOTO This past week we celebrated the beautiful Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The gospel text from Luke’s infancy narrative reminded us of the saving mystery of the Incarnation. Through the generous, trusting response of Mary of Nazareth, the Divine Word became flesh, taking on our human nature. Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Son of Mary, is true God and true man. He is Emmanuel, “God-with-us.” The mystery of the Incarnation is not a singular event. With the Annunciation God enters into human history in an irrevocable way. He eternally embraced our humanity. Through baptism we participate in the Incarnation. Jesus took on our human nature so that we could share in His divine nature. The baptism we have received is also the sacrament we are called to live. Because of our baptism, our life in Christ should radiate in all we say and do. This is fundamental to authentic Christian living. It should be renewed and enlivened during these sacred days of Lent as we draw near to Holy Week and the celebration of the Paschal Triduum. The alarming and ever mounting outbreak of the Corona-virus has paralyzed the social and economic vitality of the State of California, the Nation, and many parts of the world. Cooperating with efforts to control the outbreak of the virus and protect many of our vulnerable brothers and sisters, the Catholic Church in Sacramento has suspended all of the traditional public customs and rituals of these sacred days. Remember: Lent is not suspended. Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum, and Easter will come. The change in our usual manner of marking the days of the Lord’s death and resurrection should stir us to re-examine our heart and seek more intently to follow where the Lord Jesus will lead us in this way of the cross for 2020. When each of us was baptized, we were immersed into the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. This extraordinary grace binds us to the Lord. As St. Paul told us in his letter to the Romans, “We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.” The sacramental dynamic of the Lord’s death and resurrection is lived out by each of His disciples in the manner that each of us more closely embraces the newness of life found in Jesus. The current circumstances have shaken us from our usual rhythms. We are unable to gather near to the Eucharistic table of the Lord. Still, through the grace of our baptism we can draw near to Jesus and through him enter into the mystical union of the one Body of Christ. Our sufferings, our sacrifices, offer us the means of entering into communion with Christ. Paul told us in his letter to the Colossians, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church.” Let us pray that these words of Paul may find a place in our own hearts. Growing numbers of our neighbors find themselves infected with the coronavirus. The numbers of those dying from this plague are mounting. Many friends and relatives

have lost their jobs. Many of you are staying home because of your children, relatives who need you, and you cannot work. Loneliness and isolation weary and worry an escalating portion of our communities. Each day the future seems cloudier. The courageous perseverance of health care workers, first-responders, grocery store clerks, and others inspire us while their vulnerability in the exercise of their daily duties remind us how vulnerable we have all become. The baptized are charged to make the Incarnation alive in these circumstances. We are the witnesses of Emmanuel, God-is-with-us. Our personal testimony should make Christ present for others. Pope Benedict taught that no Eucharist is complete without concrete acts of charity. This means that every act of charity offered with faith in the Lord Jesus is intimately connected with the Eucharist for which we so hunger. May that hunger give us a desire to offer our sacrifices and works of charity so that we may savor its grace in our hearts and through us the Eucharist may reach others. I am grateful to my brother priests who make themselves available to hear confessions, always observing health precautions while protecting the seal of confession. For those who are unable to approach the sacrament of Penance, remember that you can make a perfect act of contrition with a firm resolve to confess your sins as soon as you are able. This act of perfect contrition does offer God’s abundant mercy and the forgiveness of sins. More guidance is available on the diocesan as well as parish websites. My brother priests, Bishop Weigand and I daily offer Mass for all the People of God in the Diocese of Sacramento. Join with me in praying for God’s mercy to end this pandemic, heal all those afflicted, sustain all those who care for the afflicted. May all the deceased receive God’s mercy. May all those who mourn be consoled by the Lord’s tenderness.

⧫ La semana pasada celebramos la hermosa solemnidad de la Anunciación del Señor, el 25 de marzo. El texto del evangelio de la narrativa de Lucas nos recordó el misterio salvador de la Encarnación. A través de la respuesta generosa y confiada de María de Nazaret, la Palabra Divina se hizo carne, asumiendo nuestra naturaleza humana. Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios y el Hijo de María, es Dios verdadero y hombre verdadero. Él es Emmanuel, "Dios con nosotros". El misterio de la Encarnación no es un evento singular. Las circunstancias actuales nos han sacudido de nuestros ritmos habituales. No podemos reunirnos en torno a la mesa eucarística del Señor. Aún así, por la gracia de nuestro bautismo estamos ya íntimamente incorporados a Jesús y a través de él gozamos de la unión mística del Cuerpo de Cristo. Nuestros sufrimientos, nuestros sacrificios, nos ofrecen los medios para entrar en comunión con Cristo. officials, Bishop Jaime Soto has requested that the retired priests observe the “shelter in place” directive. In light of this, the Bishop has appointed Father Raj the “priest in charge” until St. Lawrence Church until June 30, 2020. Congratulations to Father Raj on his appointment.

Agradezco a mis hermanos sacerdotes que se ponen a su disposición para escuchar confesiones, siempre observando precauciones de salud mientras protegen el sello de la confesión. Para aquellos que no pueden acercarse al sacramento de la Penitencia, recuerden que pueden hacer un acto perfecto de contrición con la firme resolución de confesar sus pecados tan pronto como puedan.
