It’s Going to Be a
Great Year
As summer goes by, too quickly as usual, we are
turning our attention towards the coming year at the
Jericho Jewish Center. As we welcome you back from
summer, please join us for a special BBQ on Tuesday,
September 5 at 6:30 pm at the synagogue. Reconnect
with old friends before the holidays while enjoying music
-and of course the special cooking of Chef Craig Berman.
Before Rosh Hashanah we have two special
programs on Saturday, September 16. That morning we
will be installing our new congregational Board with a
special welcome, thanking them in advance for all the
service they will do to strengthen the Jericho Jewish
Center. That evening at 9:00 pm we have a special
Selichot program with Scholar-in-Residence Rahel
Musleah, who will be teaching us about Jewish Calcutta:
Through Music and Memory. This will be followed by a
Seder Yhi Ratzon, where we learn about and partake in
the foods that are special for Rosh Hashanah. Selichot
services will begin at 11:00 pm.
We are so excited that The Past Is Present with
the return of our Cantor Emeritus, Israel Goldstein, to
lead us in High Holiday services. For those who don’t
know, Cantor Goldstein served our congregation for over
40 years, serving as our Shaliach Tzibur (prayer leader),
organizing the High Holiday choir and teaching B’nai
Mitzvah students. It is such an honor to have him rejoin
us on the Bimah for these High Holidays.
On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, there will
continue to be babysitting as well as the same wonderful
family service offerings. Back by popular demand, we
will have activity stations for Preschool students - this
year on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.
They will be in the Ulam downstairs from 11:00 am -
noon on Rosh Hashanah and from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
on Yom Kippur. Our service for students between
Kindergarten and 2nd grade will be in the Library
downstairs (10:30-noon on Rosh Hashanah, 11:00-12:30
on Yom Kippur) and will be led by Steve Gordonson and
Eric Starr. Our service for students in 3rd grade and up
will be in the Beit Midrash led by Dr. Howard Gendel.
Immediately following that service, I will be leading a
discussion for congregants of all ages on both the First
Day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The topic on
Rosh Hashanah is “Can We Really Re-Create
Ourselves?” and the topic on Yom Kippur will be “Jonah:
Rebirth and Resurrection.”
My goal is to maximize congregational
participation and enthusiasm for all that we offer at the
Jericho Jewish Center. Please read this bulletin carefully
and see all of the opportunities for families to participate
in the High Holidays, from children blowing their
Shofarot on both days of Rosh Hashanah to bringing up
glow sticks during Havdalah on Yom Kippur to a break-
fast for after Yom Kippur (reservations required). Please
take advantage and join us as much as you can so that this
can truly be your Jericho Jewish Center.

Richard Cepler
As the Board of Trustees, Executive Board
and officers begin our terms, I want to
express our appreciation to the entire
Jericho Jewish Center community in
providing us with the opportunity to serve in
our capacities. We understand the
responsibilities that we have, and we will
always do our best to focus our energies
and make decisions on what is best, over
the long term, for the Jericho Jewish Center.
In order to accomplish our goals, we require
help from everyone. We are grateful for all
the efforts that our former Co-Presidents,
Diane Charet and Martha Perlson
expended, and we appreciate all that they
and all the previous administrations over the
last 60 years of the Jericho Jewish Center
have achieved.
Now we are reaching out to the entire
membership. We want to capitalize on all
the important skills that our members have.
We want to engage everyone in making the
Jericho Jewish Center a thriving and
dynamic space where your values are
appreciated and nurtured.
Do you have the ability to write a grant
letter? If so, we want to draw on your
expertise. Do you have computer skills or
affinity in social media which would allow us
to communicate better with our
congregants? If so, we want to draw on
your expertise. Do you have the knowledge
to teach a course in Torah or help your
friends read Hebrew better? If so, we want
to draw on your expertise.
The Jericho Jewish Center is fortunate to
have a highly educated cadre of members
with diversified interests and talents. Please
let us know how we can best engage the
abilities that you possess.
Just as importantly, we want to provide you
with the resources that you require. What
events and programs would you like to see
at the Jericho Jewish Center to engage you
and your family?
Please be in touch and give me your
thoughts and your time.
With appreciation,
Richard Cepler

Amy Kahane,
Educat ion Director
Shalom,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you back
to another exciting year at the Jewish Youth
Learning Center at the Jericho Jewish Center. I
am looking forward to the hallways being filled
with students' laughter and ruach! The first day of
religious school is Tuesday, Sept 5th at 4:15
pm. Please join us at 6:30 pm for a Welcome
Back BBQ Dinner. It’s a great time to mingle with
our RS families and congregants.
At the end of May, I asked the students to
complete three tasks during the summer
vacation: read a book, do a mitzvah, and do
something Jewish. I am looking forward to hearing
from them about these experiences. While you
were on vacation, we were busy planning new fun
programs and activities to enhance the learning
experience for the students this year.
We will be continuing our successful Shabbat
programs and look forward to your engagement in
them. Our Shabbat-in-Shul School was a
success and we look forward to our students
leading more of the service each Shabbat
morning. Our Friday Night Live Service will
continue to take place the second Friday of each
month. (Except Oct. 20 and Nov 17 (on the 3rd
Friday night). We have a catered dinner plus a
lively, informal, abbreviated service. We often
feature music played by our students who play
musical instruments. We hope you will add your
voices and make Shabbat come alive.
Our Shabbat Alive family service, takes place the
first Saturday of each month, will begin in
October. These are family friendly services, led
by students, USY members, and the Rabbi to
encourage family participation.
This year, we will have a new program; BOOT
CAMP for 6th and 7th graders which will take place
on Mondays between 3:15 pm and 6:15 pm.
Students in groups of four will have private
sessions with our Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor to master
their tefilot for their upcoming services. When the
students master their tefilot, they will have
completed the new BOOT CAMP program.
As you can see, our goal in the new Jewish Youth
Learning Center is to motivate learning and
provide opportunities to LIVE the learning. In this
way, we are building meaningful relationships. It is
with this encouragement and vision that our
Jewish Youth Learning Center Religious School is
flourishing.
B’shalom,
Amy Kahane

This summer, we had a mini camp for two weeks at the end of June. Our 2-week program was
a bridge between the end of preschool and the beginning of our first Iken Summer Sensations
Day Camp here at Jericho Jewish Center.
We understand that the parental experience is just as important as the child’s
experience. This is often the first time parents have entrusted their child to others.
We use a multi-faceted approach in communicating with parents including monthly calendars,
teacher phone calls, emails, parent web portal, emergency announcements and weekly updates
from your child’s teacher, the Director, and sometimes a specialist!
During the summer months, we offer a Summer Camp program that includes that all-time
favorite…water play and Jump Bunch!
Our staff is busy getting ready for another fabulous preschool year at Jericho Jewish Center.
Stay tuned for all the new surprises we have in store for the 2017-18 school year!

70TH ANNIV.
Keter means crown, and is the ornament on top of our Torahs;
our gift from G-d uniting us as a people.
The Keter Torah campaign began nine years ago as a fundraiser and is still strong today.
There are several contribution options available, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss them with you.
The Jericho Jewish Center is only as strong as its members and we need your support.
Please join me as a KETER TORAH CONTRIBUTOR.
Donors are displayed monthly in the newsletter (see below) and we look forward to filling the page!
My motto is: “give until it feels really great”. -Mark Perlson
