    81 Introduction

    1.1 Purpose and Scope

This document covers requirements and clarifications concerning NORSOK Standard R-004 Piping and Equipment Insulation , and shall always be read together with Norsok R-004. Requirements in Norsok R-004 are applicable unless otherwise stated in this document.

This document is applicable to all ConocoPhillips Norways insulation work including:

Construction of new platforms or modules

Modification of existing platforms or modules

Insulation of equipment and bulk items, either purchased directly by ConocoPhillips or supplied through other organisations

It shall be observed that it is ConocoPhillips policy that the use of insulation shall be avoided if possible, in order to reduce the risk of corrosion under insulation.

    1.2 Responsibility and Ownership

Materials and Inspection Leader is the owner of this document, and is responsible for updating or withdrawal of the document as dictated by organizational or operational changes.

    82 Technical Requirements

2.1 Design of insulation systems (additional to R-004)

The design and installation of insulation systems shall be such that the risk of ingress of water into the insulation shall be reduced to a minimum, and at the same time allow for proper drainage. The insulation contractor shall establish a document containing all insulation details, including removable jackets for valves and flanges, and present this for approval by ConocoPhillips prior to the start of insulation work. Methods for termination of non-metallic jacketing (tape) onto hot-service piping shall be taken into account. Carbon steel jacketing shall not be used at any time.

2.2 Painting prior to the installation of insulation (additional to R-004)

For all materials except titanium, it is a requirement that surfaces to be insulated shall be coated/painted. It is the insulation contractors responsibility to ensure that no insulation is carried out until coating/painting of all surfaces is 100% complete.

2.3 Build-up of insulation systems on piping (additional to R-004)

The build-up of insulation systems on piping shall be in accordance with Annex A1 - Insulation Build-Up on Piping (Internal Areas) on page 6 and Annex A2 - Insulation Build-Up on Piping (Weather-Exposed) on page 7 in this document.

Non-metallic weatherproofing membrane (tape) shall be used as jacketing in internal areas of modules (including naturally ventilated modules) on insulation classes 1,2,4,6,7,8 and 9. The colour of the non-metallic jacketing shall be light grey. A thin aluminium foil shall be installed directly underneath the non-metallic weatherproofing membrane in order to simplify any future removal and replacement

Aluminium jacketing shall be used in weather exposed / external areas on insulation classes 1,2,4,6,7,8 and 9

The build-up of class 5 insulation is dependant on the relevant fire protection requirements, and is subject to ConocoPhillips acceptance. Stainless steel jacketing shall always be used on class 5 insulation. Class 5 insulation shall be made easily identifiable by installing markers (in accordance with Annex B - Marking of Class 5 Insulation on page 8) on the outside of the jacketing each 5 10 meters

Products containing isocyanates shall not be used at any time Document / Revision No. Owner Approved

82.4 Flanges and valves (additional to R-004)

Flanges and valves shall when possible be left un-insulated. The following shall be applicable when insulation of valves and flanges is required:

Removable, deluge proof, tailor-made insulation jackets shall be used in internal areas on smaller valves (20 and smaller)

Standard insulation boxes shall be used in weather exposed areas, and on large valves (larger than 20)

Jackets and boxes shall be designed in order to avoid or minimise the entrance of water and to allow the drainage of water

Removable jackets shall have identification marking on both the external and internal surface of the jacket

Design of removable jackets shall be subject to ConocoPhillips approval

2.5 Offshore maintenance of insulation (additional to R-004)

Requirements applicable to offshore maintenance of insulation systems are described in ConocoPhillips document 3781 Maintenance of Surface Protection. Document / Revision No. Owner Approved
