Bayside Community Church
BSB 704-922 Account No. 100001094
Bayside Community Church is part of the NSW & ACT Baptist Association
‘Thankful’ is always a good thing to be! It gives us a more positive heart outlook for life and saves us from negativity and
nitpicking. It helps keep our focus outward and thinking more contentedly
about what we already have, rather than unsettled about what we think we still
might ‘need’.
At the end of November we hold our annual celebration and thanksgiving service
here at Bayside (Sunday 29 Nov). As we’ve been preparing for that, some of us
were taken by the notion of the North American concept of ‘Thanksgiving’ which
happens at around the same time of the year. Thanksgiving is a major event and
celebrated holiday held on the fourth Thursday of November each year rivalling
Christmas celebrations for many North Americans.
Founded initially by the early Pilgrim settlers it has at its heart a thankfulness for
what they had. They apparently began the tradition in response to the bounty
of their first good harvest from what was the ‘new’ land for them.
Although like Christmas it has been somewhat commercialised over the years,
many still recognise it, as did the originators, as a celebration of the provision of
God for those who had newly settled there alongside the native Americans. Not
such a bad concept to build a celebration around!
What have you got to be thankful for?
As we move through the final term of the year we are conscious of God’s
provision for us as a church community this year in many ways and want to be
thankful for that. We also want to continue to share His goodness and blessing
with others wherever we can and are thankful for opportunities to do so. Enjoy
reading about just some of those opportunities within these pages... and be
thankful!
Grace and peace,
Mark Falson, AM Congregation Pastor
Hello and Welcome
Wentworth Point
Eat Out & Sleep Out for Homelessness To mark August’s Homeless Persons Week, Breathe, the wider Bayside family and
our local community met for our version of the winter sleepout in Wentworth
Point. The aim was to raise awareness and funds for those living rough on
Sydney's streets each winter. All proceeds are donated to St Vincent de Paul's
Society Parramatta Diocese Vinnies Van that supports the homeless communities
across western Sydney.
An amazing night!
70 attendees enjoyed toasting marshmallows by the roaring fire.
Our volunteer musos sang up a storm!
Sport on the lawn was a great way to keep warm!
The highlight was hearing from our guest speakers- their personal
experiences of homelessness touched us all.
5 Acer Aspire Tablets were raffled - congratulations to our winners!
What about Sleep Out?
It was a clear and VERY cold night under the stars on the Acer lawn!
Congratulations to the team from Wentworth Point Property who hit the
turf for the first time.
Well done to Bayside youth for bravely
sleeping out!
For all 20 of us who slept out it was a
perspective shifting taste of the realities faced
by many every night of the year.
In latest Eat Out-Sleep Out news...
With support from local businesses donations of almost $10000 were
collected!
A carload of bags of warm clothing and blankets was delivered to the
Vinnies Van to be given directly to those on the streets this winter.
We are thrilled to have played a small part in increasing awareness of this issue
that affects 28000 Aussies every night of the year!
A HUGE thank you to our Supporters, Contributors & Donors!

and manual handling. Once you have completed the Induction Program you will
work with experienced volunteers on the Van who can help you gain hands-on
experience
Vinnies Van Volunteers meet at the base in Merrylands at 6:45pm on their
rostered night. Volunteers then prepare and pack the Van and travel together to
set locations, spending an hour at each stop. Teams usually return to base before
11:30pm
Kath Simmonds from our breathe
congregation leads a Vinnies Van team
to Mt Druitt and Parramatta every 4th
Saturday of the month.
The team would love some new
members. Will you think about joining
them to serve food and friendship to
the homeless?
Next training session to join our Vinnies Van crew
is on Saturday 14th November
from 9:30am-12:30pm at Wentworthville

Breathe gathers in Wentworth Point
every Sunday evening (except the last of
the month). There is space for everyone,
no matter where you are on your
spiritual journey. Our gatherings are
relaxed, informal, discussion based and
communal. Come along and eat with us,
learn, share your thoughts, and get to
know some new friends in the process. It’s church, but not as you know it!
Contact Nicole at [email protected] to find out where to meet.
Farewelling the Brices
It is with a mixture of sadness and
joy that we farewell Dave & Tash
Brice this month. Tash & Dave
have been together as part of the
Breathe community for 3 years,
and prior to that Dave has been a
foundational part of the Breathe
community since its earliest days.
They have both invested deeply in
God’s mission through Breathe,
loving and serving our local community. They have been great friends and
we have loved sharing life’s journey with them.
Sending Out
We are excited for them as they move on to new opportunities to love and
serve others on the other side of the world - in Gulu, northern Uganda!
Tash will be volunteering as a registered nurse in 8 primary health clinics,
firstly working alongside the local nurses, then in a teaching capacity. She is

looking forward to learning from the locals too. Dave is finalising his plans and is
hoping for an opportunity to work in a peace building and development
organisation. They are both relishing the opportunity to live out their heart for
justice by using their gifts and skills in an area that might otherwise not enjoy
the same resources and opportunities as we have here in Australia.
They fly out on Sunday the 1st of November, and upon their arrival will be hut
sitting for Tash’s boss and his wife, and looking after their cat Sir Edmund.
Many Thanks
We are so thankful for Dave’s leadership, wisdom, teaching, care and desire to
help people grow as Jesus’ followers over many years. He has been a great
example to Breathe and a blessing to our neighbourhood. And we have enjoyed
Tash’s fun, creativity and learned from her desire to worship God with her life.
Thanks for being blessings to us all guys! You will be missed.
What’s your favourite colour?
Navy Blue
What’s your favourite food?
BACON! (Tom’s emphasis)
Where’s your favourite place and why?
A park bench on top of a hill that overlooks the ocean at Culburra. I love this
place because I have never found a place that can be so quiet and peaceful and
God and I love to sit back and chill out there together.
What's involved in your role as youth worker at Bayside?
Absolutely nothing except having fun! Just kidding,. For Bayside I head up what
happens at Crosseyed youth group on a Friday night and Priority One on a
Sunday morning. I also ty to build connections with the local community through
involvement in local high schools.
What does your other day job involve?
When I'm not working for Bayside sometimes I run around in tights and little
undies with a picture of a bat on my chest...generally in the dark. Most of the
time however, I am a Youth Worker for an organisation in the Liverpool area.
This job mostly involves putting on fun and healthy recreational and leisure
activities for high-schoolers after school and during the holidays.
What is your dream for Bayside's youth?
I love the youth of Bayside very deeply but I know for certain that I do not love
them as deeply as Jesus does. It is my dream that our teens see and feel the
depths of his amazing and unconditional love for them.
I dream that the work done at Crosseyed and Priority One would encourage the
kids to grow in their knowledge of Christ and know that each and every one of
them have been called to do some awesome things with their lives.
Meet Tom Burton, our new Youth Worker
How did you propose to Erin?
It was probably the best proposal of all time. I took Erin to the majestic Blue
Mountains for an incredibly breathtaking waterfall walk and at the first of four of
these beautiful sights I got down on one knee and popped the question. She was
a little shocked and didn't say much for the next little while but that's how I
prefer it anyway. Jokes. It was a lovely day in the sunshine.
What are three things most people don't know about you?
My middle name is Edward.
I hate any food with the word 'berry' in it.
I am currently losing an ongoing battle with Donut King at Burwood Westfields. The score is currently Donut King: 8 Tom: 2
Crosseyed is for anyone in Years 6-12
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him
and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4 (NIV)
PRAY and give thanks for God’s provision for us as a church community this year in so many ways!
PRAY and invite the Holy Spirit to be wholly free and active, to be at work among us and through us as we live within, and interact with, our local communities in various ways. Ask the Lord for boldness, openness, willingness and courage to pursue what He is calling each of us to, right where we are. ‘Lord have your way in us!’
PRAY for the Breathe community at present as they seek out a new place to gather regularly. Ask that they would know God’s presence and peace in their present season
PRAY for the Lord’s continuing favour as we seek out a new Senior Pastor. The pastoral search team continue to need the Lord’s wisdom and discernment as they lead us in this in every step of the process. Pray for a freshness and vitality for them as they serve us in this way
PRAY for ongoing fruitfulness through relationship and connection in each of our footprint areas and surrounds: for the people of Wentworth Point, Newington, Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush West, Concord West, Liberty Grove and Rhodes. Pray for a spiritual hunger and thirst amidst the demands and busyness of people’s lives that will not be satisfied except in Jesus
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds
in Christ Jesus” Phil. 4:6-7 (TNIV)
Praying @ Bayside
Shoalhaven Aboriginal Community Church (ShACC) ShACC is a community of Jesus followers in the Shoalhaven region of south
coast NSW. The church began in 2009 with the assistance of All Saints Anglican
Church, Nowra and consists mainly of people from the local Aboriginal
Community but is inclusive of all people. Indeed the Burton family have been
worshipping at ShACC for almost 4 years during their regular visits to the south
coast.
It was through this connection with ShACC, that Bayside decided to form a
friendship with them in 2013 from a desire to pursue an ongoing relationship
with a community of believers within NSW (and not too far from Sydney) who
live out their faith in a different context to our own. We made a commitment
to encourate and support them in prayer and they made the same commitment
to us. Members of both churches have visited each other.
The environment in which ShACC exists is very different to ours as shared in a letter from Phil Miles, Pastor “Recently in Nowra the police trialled a new kind of breathalyser which detects
drugs. On that day something like a quarter of the drivers checked proved to be
under the influence of drugs. This was a bit of a shock but not altogether
surprising; Nowra is a place where drugs are freely available and widely used.
Sadly, the Shoalhaven area was recently highlighted as the school drug capital of
NSW. Some of this is cannabis but ‘ice’ is becoming an increasing problem.
Aboriginal people make up some 5% of the population of the Shoalhaven region,
and would naturally be as affected by these problems as anyone else.
But I think it’s pretty clear that drugs are having a far bigger impact on the
Aboriginal community than the wider population. I suspect they affect every
extended Aboriginal family in our region. In a recent police drug operation a
number of Aboriginal people were arrested, including some known to our
congregation.
Drugs are only one of the social issues we face here.
I understand that East Nowra, which has a large Aboriginal component, has the
largest police call-out rate for domestic violence of any place in NSW. That is a
reflection of wider family issues. Many families in our area, both White and
Aboriginal, are in disarray, which leads to ongoing social problems. In the
general Australian population, about 15% of families are single parent families
but in the Aboriginal population in the Shoalhaven region close to half of all
families with children are single parent families. This has an enormous impact on
the lives of Aboriginal children and young people.
One theme which runs through all of these social issues is the lack of stable male
leadership in family life and in the Aboriginal community generally. This has
been referred to as the ‘absent father syndrome’ and experience around the
world has shown how tragic the effects of absent fathers can be.
Well, that is a little about our situation, but how does ShACC function in that
world?
ShACC is an oasis of faith, hope and love for our members, many of whom
have to deal with that wider world on a daily basis.
Uncle John Bolt reads the Bible at our Sunday morning meeting.

Like his father before him, David learned to read and write using a Bible at
the mission school. The church David first attended is featured on the $50
note and the mission school was attached to the church.
In the late 1400s Leonardo do Vinci dreamed of building a helicopter and
400 years later David had the same vision, but David’s idea came from
rotating blades like a boomerang
In 1909 David invented a hand tool for shearing sheep. (You’ll see it on the
$50 note in the middle, on the right of a drawing of his face) David became
famous for many inventions—a centrifugal motor, a multi-radial wheel and
a mechanical propulsion device. However he was unable to secure enough
financial backing to fully develop his ideas. Still he gained a reputation as
‘Australia’s Leonardo’ for his promotion of scientific ideas.
David wrote poetry and authored books. He travelled south-eastern
Australia for 50 years writing, lecturing and preaching about Jesus. He
challenged those listening to “look at me and you will see what the Bible
can do”. He always acknowledged that God transformed his life into a life
serving others.
He eventually became the Aboriginal spokesperson to the government on
many issues connected to the wellbeing of his people
David is acknowledged as the first Indigenous Australian writer. In the
preface to his book The Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines he
writes ‘ As a full-blooded member of my race I think I may claim to be the
first—but I hope not the last—to produce an enduring record of our
customs, beliefs and imaginings’
His legacy is as an activist, scientist and writer and most of all, a man of faith
and a testimony to what God can do with a life devoted to Him.

Life Groups are great opportunities to connect
deeply with others on a regular basis and grow in
your faith in a safe environment.
You will be accepted, supported and encouraged as
the group shares some of life, prays, learns from
God’s word, serves each other and seeks to bless
others - together. We have a variety of Life Groups – womens, mens, mixed,
young adults – and always adding new ones. Mark Falson, AM Congregation
Pastor, will be happy to talk about which Life Group might suit you best.
Connect Groups are usually larger groups of
people from our church community that meet on a
semi-regular basis.
They’re a relaxed social time that usually involves
sharing a meal together, and occasionally someone
sharing an aspect of a life of faith. If you're keen to
find out more or come along to a connect group contact Mark Falson
At Bayside we want our interactions and expressions of
community to go beyond getting together on Sundays.
Breathe Groups meet fortnightly. We enjoy time
catching up together, praying and helping each other
learn to live differently because of Jesus.
For those new to church or who are still working out
what Jesus is on about there are opportunities for
you to explore. We run groups that learn together about Jesus, or you can meet
up one to one with one of us- we'll do our best to help you find answers to your
questions. Contact Nicole, Breathe Congregation Pastor, to find out more.

We see a Church...
Building people, raising up and releasing disciples to live out their
God-given calling. We envision a church that develops an excess of leaders to
spearhead new things. And we see a church that also champions the
missional impact of each person in their own relationships and spheres of
influence.
Mark 4:8: “Some seed… produced a crop, multiplying thirty,
sixty or even a hundred times.”
Expanding its influence across the district, deepening its current
ministry footprints and adding new ones. We envision an agile, flexible and
impacting church, not centralising our ministry in one location but expanding
in response to God given opportunities. We see both our current
congregations increasing significantly in size and capacity. We see a church
that plants new congregations across our local area and beyond.
Matt 5:13-14: “You are the salt of the earth…you are
the light of the world.”
Transforming the next generation, championing ministries to children,
youth and families. We see disciples raised up from every generation and
family heritages transformed for good.
Ps 87:4: “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds
of the Lord.”
Impacting globally, deeply engaged in making a difference for Christ in
mission across the world; thinking and acting globally as well as locally.
John 20:21: “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
Our Vision
We exist to love God and love people;
encouraging everyone to grow

Community sharing life deeply
