In her biography written by Pierce, it says, "Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (97). Oprah is definitely using her money to help those less fortunate.

direct quotation:According to Pierce, "Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (97). Oprah is charitable with her money.

"Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world" (Pierce 97). Oprah sure is a benevolent woman.

paraphrase:Oprah Winfrey has a private charity called The Oprah Winfrey Foundation that focuses on the education of women, children and families; she helps families from around the United States and throughout the world (Pierce 97). She definitely demonstrates what is it means to use her wealth to help others.

Take the following notes:

There are three ways to use an author's words and thoughts in your paper.

1. Directly quote the author and include his or her name in the sentence. End with the page number in parentheses.

2. Directly quote the author. End with the author's last name and page number in parentheses.

3. Paraphrase the author's words and thoughts by summarizing the author's idea by putting it in most of your own words- NO QUOTES. End with the author's last name and page number in parentheses.

NOW get a laptop- be sure to get the one I have signed out to you on the chart on the cart. Log in and go to the school's homepage.

Get your outline out. Put it on the upper left corner of your desk. Paraphrase an idea from this passage:

One of the Great Waterparks in PA!By Linda Shuck

The summer is not complete without a visit to one of PA's great water parks. Knoebels PA water park is great fun for the whole family. The waterpark's Crystal Pool has all sorts of waterslides and diving boards for your summer pleasure. One of the best rides is Skloosh!, a 16-passenger rubber craft that gets carried up a steep incline and launched down a water ramp. There's even a water park just for your little ones, as they can swim around in shallow water, enjoy fountains, and much more. Once you're done cooling off at the water park, you can dry off at one of the many roller-coasters and other amusement park rides at Knoebels. Best of all, admission is free!

I paraphrased this idea, “The waterpark's Crystal Pool has all sorts of waterslides and diving boards for your summer pleasure.”

The Crystal Pool at Knoebel’s Amusement Resort has many waterslides and diving boards to cool you off on hot summer days (Shuck 9).
