Dear People of St. Mary’s, You can still bring your envelope for the support of the Benedictine Sisters in Chipole, Tanzania

next weekend. Be as generous as you can as they serve many poor people.

On August 15—the Feast of the Assumption—a Holy Day of Obligation, Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 AM at the St . Mary ’s Cemetery. Another Mass is celebrated in the

church at 5:30 PM. Sign up for: “What to know before you go! Perspectives on Grief, Death and Funerals” on August 15 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM in our Great Hall. Join others in exploring the changing nature of how we deal with death and dying and the rituals that surround it. Discover how various Christian traditions view rituals surrounding death and dying and why they are important. Listen to funeral directors as they address important practical questions that confront people when they face and are anticipating their own death or the death of someone they love. Learn about the importance of writing your health care directive and your thoughts on the rituals that will surround your death on paper and sharing them with your loved ones. Invite anyone who might benefit from this gathering. The evening is sponsored by Alexandria Covenant Church, Anderson Funeral Home, First Lutheran Church, Lind Family Funeral Home and St. Mary’s Church. An RSVP will be welcomed by Monday, August 12 by calling 320-763-5781 or emailing [email protected] or sign up at the hospitality desk.

This weekend, one of the Eucharistic Adoration Committee members invited members of our parish to take part in a Catholic Devotional Prayer - Eucharistic Adoration. It is a good thing to spend an hour a week in quiet prayer. This is an opportunity to pray before the exposed Blessed Sacrament in silence with others. For more information or to sign up, call Sue McCulloch at 320-491-7006 or [email protected]. Fr. Steve

BEEN THINKING ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC? Have you been worshipping with your spouse at Mass? Been away from the Church for quite a while and want to find a spiritual home? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process that ‘enfolds’ many situations. It is not “a Catholic class” as such, but a process through which people inquire about faith, Catholicism, the Sacraments—the rich essentials of Catholic Christianity. If you are not Catholic or have been away for a while and are curious, this is for you. Please call Fr. Steve at the parish office or email the parish office and he will get in touch with you. Our Inquiry Phase begins on Thursday, September 19. Our great team is ready!

IT’S NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH! IS YOUR FAMILY UP TO DATE ON VACCINES?

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the importance of getting recommended vaccines throughout your life. You have the power to protect yourself and your family against serious diseases [like whooping cough, cancers caused by HPV, and pneumonia] with vaccines.

During NIAM, St. Mary’s encourages you to talk to your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional to ensure you and your family are up-to-date on recommended vaccines.

We also encourage you to visit CDC’s Interactive Vaccine Guide, which provides information on the vaccines recommended during pregnancy and throughout your child’s life.

As your children head back to school this fall, make sure vaccination is at the top of your checklist. August is also a key time to make sure you are up-to-date on all the vaccines you need to stay healthy. Use CDC’s adult vaccine assessment tool to see which vaccines might be right for you.

LITURGICAL AND MUSICAL NOTES

August 4, 2019 • 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time • Year C

Leave Some for OthersThis Week’s Readings at Mass

▶ Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23 - On vanity

▶ Col 3:1-5, 9-11 - Mystical death and resurrection

▶ Luke 12:13-21 - Trust in God, not in possessions

QJesus’ Jewish listeners would have been immediate-ly suspicious about the immense wealth of the rich farmer in the parable today. Any good Jew of the time would have known the common teaching in many Old Testament readings of the responsibility for land owners to share their excess produce with the poor, the widow, the orphans or the strangers. For exam-ple, Deuteronomy says “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be left for the alien, the orphan, and the widow ... When you beat your olive trees, do not strip what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for he alien, the orphan, and the widow. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt: therefore I am commanding you to do this” (Deut. 24: 19-22). Likewise, Leviticus teaches, “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien” (Lev 19:9-10). On top of these teach-ings were continual reminders that the first tenth of all produce should be tithed, or given back to God.

So Jewish listeners probably understood Jesus’ par-able as a warning against the greed of a farmer who may not have shared his excess with the poor as his religion required of him. The ending of the parable

also reminds us that no matter how wealthy or com-fortable we are in this life (maybe at the expense of the poor) we cannot take anything with us when we die. We’ll never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul!

Questions of the Week

What is your first reaction to this parable? How or what do you think about the rich man?

What are you attached to in an unhealthy way which you would like to find freedom from

before you die?
