4.2 ROAD SIGNS AND MARKINGS
It is essential that you understand all road signs and markings. You must also knowhow to act on their instructions.
Their meanings are often given in a Highway Code or special leaflet. If available,read them and make sure that you know the meanings of all the road signs andmarkings.
SIGNS
Some signs vary from country to country. But more and more Africancountries have now adopted the international standard signs. Their meanings aregiven below.
THE SHAPES OF SIGNS
There are three main types of signs — those giving orders, those that warn, and thosethat inform. Each type has a different shape.
Circles give orders Triangles warn Rectangles inform

These signs are mainly rectangular.

Road markings are usually painted white or yellow. They may give orders orwarnings.
ROAD MARKINGS ACROSS THE CARRIAGEWAY
STOP lines.
STOP lines are usually foundat dangerous junctions whereit is difficult to see along themajor road. You must STOPand GIVE WAY to traffic onthe major road.
GIVE WAY lines.
GIVE WAY lines mean thatyou must GIVE WAY totraffic on the major road.Youneed not stop if you are surethat it is safe to enter themajor road.

ROAD MARKINGS ALONG THE CARRIAGEWAY.
Lines along the carriageway show lane, centre line or hazard markings. The longerthe line, the greater the hazard.

Continuous single or double centre line markings mean extreme danger. Do notcross or straddle these lines.
If the line nearest to you is broken, you may cross it providing it is safe to do so.
