There has been increased debate in the Diet about a ruling from the Sapporo District Court that states that provisions in the Civil Code prohibiting same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. There is also a lively debate underway about whether married couples should be allowed to have separate surnames.

One of the reasons for its popularity is that despite appearing cute on the surface, it’s infused with a dark sense of humor. It depicts selfish people such as a driv-er immersed in his smartphone, who causes a traffic jam as an ambulance approaches, or another who leaves their cat in the car on a hot day.人にん

“PUI PUI MOLCAR,” broadcast on TV from January to March is still popular.
It is a stop-motion animation about a world in which Guinea pigs (marmots) have turned into Molcars. Molcars made from wool felt race around town. The “voice actors” are real Guinea pigs and “Pui Pui” stands for their squeals.1月

The stories in it center around friendships and adven-tures, with a focus on situations that are unique to automobiles. Although Molcars are driven by people, they can also move of their own volition. Though there is no dialogue, the Molcars are very expressive. 車くるま

Though it is a children’s show that airs early in the morning with each episode lasting just a few minutes, many adults have become hooked, too. Every time it was broadcasted, it started trending on Twitter. People are making their own Molcars from felt or food and uploading photos of these onto social media. 早そう

From April 24 to June 20, a special exhibition titled “The Mount Fuji Challenges: Hokusai and Hiroshige” will be held at Edo-Tokyo Museum (Ryogoku, Tokyo). It features the entire collection of “36 Views of Mt. Fuji,” one of Katsushika Hokusai’s most renowned works. The exhibition will also focus on Utagawa Hiroshige, who was influenced by Hokusai but tried to put his own spin on his representations of the mountain. General admission costs 1,000 yen.

Shibuya – the Heart of Tokyo渋谷 -- 東京の中心 しぶ や とうきょう ちゅうしん
When you come to Tokyo, the first place I would recommend you visit is Shibuya. When I arrived in Tokyo
several years ago, the streets around Shibuya Station became the place which made the strongest impression on me and I consider it to be the heart of Tokyo: young, dynamic, boister-ous, and iconic.東とう

The most famous thing in Shibuya is probably the statue of the faithful dog Hachiko, who wait-ed for his deceased master at the sta-tion for years. If you don’t know the story, please watch the movie “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” star-ring Richard GERE. The original story, involving Professor UENO Hidesaburo and his dog, actually happened in Japan between 1920 to 1930. Now the statue of Hachiko waiting for his owner is a famous meeting spot.

If you were impressed by Hachiko’s story, I have more interesting information for you. While the statue is still at Shibuya Station, Hachiko himself in stuffed form, can be found at the Natural Museum of Nature and Science at Ueno, Tokyo, and not many people (even the Japanese) know about it. ハチ公

If you walk a little bit further from the station and reach the Cross Tower building, you will find a monument to OZAKI Yutaka. He was a popular musician among young pepople, but now he is loved by people of all ages. He cre-ated highly emotional and powerful songs and passed away at the peak of his career in 1992. Please try to listen his most famous songs: “The night of 15,” “Graduation,” and “Sherry.” They were all inspired by the emotions and struggles of young people who are just embark-ing on their adult lives. 渋しぶ

Calligrapher and artist KUNIHIRO Saori makes accessories that use hiragana as a motif. From the age of six until she graduated high school, she attended a calligraphy class taught by her classmate’s mother. After graduating from a vocational school, she worked at a dental clinic and then at a design office. “It was my job to draw up blueprints of bridges. Although it was rewarding, I thought that I wanted to do a job where I could interact more directly with customers and make them happy rather than being a member of an organization. When I thought about it, calligraphy, which I was good at, came to mind.
