8th Grade Party Information
1)We are in urgent need of parental help for minor jobs for our upcoming 8th Grade Party to help make
this event possible for our kids. We want this party to be a fun-filled, memory-making night to close out
their 8th grade year. It is a very large event, that needs a lot of parental help to get it all put together.
We are also in need of parental and business sponsors/donations. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Please refer to #3 below.
Important and mandatory meeting for any parent wishing to volunteer for the 8th Grade Party is on
Monday, April 13th at 6 PM in the cafeteria.
2) What Not To Wear: There has been some misconceptions & misunderstanding on what the kids can
and cannot wear. We have made a helpful dress guide poster for students to refer to during
lunchtime. It includes several pictures and tips on what they are expected to wear and cannot wear.
This not just a dance, but also a party with various activities your child can choose to participate
in. Even with these various activities, this is a formal event and the kids are expected to arrive nicely &
properly dressed for the occasion and on their best behavior. Below are some of the general guide-
lines. We will have a "check-in" room that the kids can safely store valuables, shoes, coats, etc.
If unsure, take a picture of outfit/dress with hands flat on sides and show to Mrs. Thomas.
Girls:
No sleeveless dresses, unless 1 inch straps sewn on (no sweetheart necklines)
No spaghetti strap dresses unless covered with a shrug and MUST remain worn the whole evening.
No dress hemlines that are above the tips of the fingers
No ballgown/prom style dresses
No cutouts or mesh that expose a lot of skin.
Boys: Khakis/dress pants; or nice, clean jeans, suits, blazers, ties
No worn down, ripped or baggy jeans
Shorts are discouraged but allowed only if dress shorts- no sports shorts or jean shorts
No baseball/sports hats
No Hoodies or T-shirts
3) Reminder that we are now accepting credit cards for 8th Grade Party purchases & donations/
sponsorships online!
We are in real need of sponsors! Anyone can sponsor. If you are able or know a willing business, online
payments and forms can be found at www.mmjhpta.com or https://squareup.com/market/garland-
mcmeans-junior-high-pta. You can customize your donation/sponsorship by adding various options to
your basket. Need help? Contact [email protected] or 832.620.1696 (feel free to text)
4) Pictures needed for the 8th Grade DVD. Please send in only your top 6 pictures of this school
year. You can send them in to the school on USB or disc in an envelope marked "8th Grade DVD" or
email pictures to [email protected] (if no reply within two days, email again!)
- USB can be returned to your child at school if stated on envelope
5)Taylor HS T-shirts are still available to order. They can be purchased off the 8th Grade party form or
online (state name & size in "notes"). You do not need to purchase a ticket to get a shirt. Your child can
pick up forms at the front desk, visit www.mmjhpta.com or https://squareup.com/market/garland-

MMJH Do The Write Thing Finalists
MMJH participated in the 2014-2015 Houston/Harris County Do the Write Thing Challenge, an aca-
demic and anti-violence program. We are proud to announce that with more than 14,000 student writ-
ing submissions from 112 area schools, we have 2 finalists, 7th graders Cami Larkin and Bryce Amos.
These students will be attending the recognition ceremony on Sunday, May 31, at NRG Center. Con-
gratulations and thank you for representing McMeans Junior High by writing how you can make a dif-
ference by example and doing the right thing!
Read It Forward Program
This year’s Read It Forward (RIF) book is The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau, one of the 2014 Texas
Lone Star reading books. If you are not familiar with this reading program, here is the scoop:
One hundred paperback copies of our RIF book were placed randomly around school, and the stu-
dents looked forward to locating the books in the front office, the library, the cafeteria, the hallways,
and various classrooms. If students find a RIF book, they can pick it up, give it a read, and forward it to
the next person to enjoy! Not your thing? Then simply find someone to pass the book to who will enjoy
reading it. These are not library books, so please do not return them to the library! After students fin-
ish reading the book, they can sign the inside front cover, forward it on the next person to read the
story, and come to the library to sign an “I read the RIF book” emblem. The library staff will add their
name to a roster of students who will have the opportunity to meet the author, who will be visiting our
school on Friday, May 1, in the library. This is an incredible opportunity for our students!
If you have any questions about the Read It Forward program, please contact Mrs. Alidon in the library.

dates, be sure they eat a nutritious breakfast before school and have all necessary test materials
with them. The campus will be closed on these dates, which means no visitors and no deliveries can
be made until testing is completed. Students may not have any electronics with them in the testing
rooms as well.
Students can bring a healthy snack on STAAR days. Make sure that the snack is dry and not sticky. It
should be no larger than 2 oz. or a snack zip lock bag size. Students can also bring a water bottle no

Goldfish crackers, animal crackers, and Teddy Grahams. Students are allowed to eat their snack

Student iPad Checkout
Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for
learning. A student can check out an iPad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, exclud-
ing the Winter and Spring Breaks. The student’s parent or legal guardian must first meet with Ms. Thom-
as, the 8th grade assistant principal, to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and
sign it along with the student. This document will be kept on file for the current school year. The student
will be instructed on proper use and care of the borrowed equipment. Please call the school at 281-
237-8000 to set up an appointment.
Junior Achievement News-Volunteers Needed!
Hey Wonderful Bobcat Parents! There is a fun volunteer opportunity coming your way in May. By then
we’ll all be ready for some fun! On Wednesday, May 6, we will have our annual Day With Junior
Achievement (JA). This is a valuable program for sixth grade students where they learn about econom-
ics and business from parents, community leaders, and business partners. If you don’t have a 6th
grader at our school, no worries. You can still volunteer. We usually even have some local business
folk who come in for the day to help out. If you could donate a day of your time, we would love to have
you come in and present a lesson. Here is how it works:
Volunteers come in and stay in one classroom all day long.
As the students rotate through classes, they receive a different lesson during each core (reading,
English, math, science, social studies) class.
Lunch is provided.
All lessons are prepared and pre-packaged in advance, and they can be sent to you so that you can
familiarize yourself with the curriculum.
The teacher will be with you the entire time.
UPDATE: There are still three volunteer openings for the Day With JA on Wednesday, May 6. I have
openings for Mrs. Peacock, Math, Mrs. Sholars, Science, and Mrs. Caniff, reading. If you can help with
this valuable program for sixth grade, please email me at [email protected]. We literally cannot do
JA without you. Thanks in advance!
