Concerning Holy Image
For those to whom tpriestly dignity is allotted, tguide-lines contained in tcanonical regulations are tesmonies and directives. We acept them gladly and sing oto the Lord God with Davthe revealer of God: In the paof your testimonies I hataken delight, as with all maner of wealth; and, You ha
enjoined justice, your testimnies are for ever; instruct me give me life. And if the prphetic voice orders us for eternity to observe the mesages of God and to live them, it is obvious that thremain unshakeable and immoveable; thus Moses, wlooked on God, declares, Tthese there is no addition, afrom these there is no subtra
tion. The divine apostle takes pride in them when cries out, These things which the angels long to gaupon, and, If an angel brings you a gospel contrary what you have received, let him be accursed.
Since these things really are such and habeen testified to us in these ways, we exult in them a person would if he were to come across a great maof booty. The bishop raised theissue of Christian unityand the role of theUkrainian Greek Catho-
lic Church in ecumenism.Ukraine and the Ukrainian
Greek Catholic Church in par-ticular, which are located in thecenter of Europe and whichhave survived difficult histori-cal vicissitudes, have, accordingto Bishop, managed to remainloyal to Christ, to unity, and tothe people: Often during dis-cussion about the identity of theChurch, which is both Catholic
and Orthodox, the temptationarises to cut the Gordian knot infavor of one. But cutting wouldignore the real identity of thechurch, said the bishop.
Bishop Venedykt comparedthe identity of the UkrainianGreek Catholic Church with anold icon that has been destroyedwith time, on which, at firstglance, it is difficult to see whois portrayed. Only the skillful
and careful hand of a restorercan reveal the original facefrom under the layers and re-store the purity of the icon: Wedont have to avidly search forour identity, because we haveour God-given identity weshould be ourselves, that is,Eastern Catholics. The Lordcalls on us to live life in the fullunity of the Christian East andWestour church maintains theface of the undivided Church ofChrist. Extraneous historieshave had their affect, so we, asskilled restorers, must discernthe fake from the original andremove the soot of the centu-ries. I believe that God chose usto be witnesses of the Churchsunity.

and Orthodoxy remains a tragicreality of Christianity in thetwentieth century and has beendeeply felt in Ukraine:Because we belong both to theChristian East and West, theschism goes through our wholebeing. Unfortunately, for thethousand years of the schism,we must state that the RomanCatholic Church has learned tocope without the OrthodoxChurch, just like the OrthodoxChurch has done so without theRoman Catholic Church. Eachof them lives its life withoutneeding the other. But we Greek
Catholics need both the Chris-tian East and West; the desire tofind ways to unity has disap-peared from our Church.
The bishop also expressedthe view that unity cannot beachieved by conducting confer-
ences or organizing committees:Our very existence is whatmust lead to unity.
Despite significant develop-ments in the ecumenical dia-logue, the bishop believes thatrecently tolerance, not unity, has come to the foreground, thatis, the understanding that Godleads all to salvation. Thismentality does not representChristian beliefs. A Christian, who has faith in God, is awareof the abnormality ofn theschism in Christianity. If we asa Church (Primate, bishops, priests and laity) will grow in
holiness, change spiritually, then God will be able to show amodel of unity through us. Per-sonal life and conversion is ahuge contribution to the unity ofthe Church, concluded thebishop.
Bishop Venedykt Aleksiychukauxiliar bishop of Lviv
six holy universal synods and
from the synods assembled lo-cally for the promulgation ofsuch decrees, and from our holyfathers. Indeed all of these, enlightened by one and the sameSpirit, decreed what is expedient. In the case of those whom theysent away under an anathema,we also anathematize them, those whom they suspended, wealso suspend; those whom theyexcommunicated, we also ex-
communicate; those whom theyplaced under penalties, we alsodeal with in the same way. Letyour conduct be free from avari-ciousness, contenting yourselfwith what you have, cried outwith all explicitness the divineapostle Paul, who mounted to thethird heaven and heard wordsthat cannot be uttered!

A word cloud is a visual representation of text used to quickly identify
the content of a body of text. The word cloud below takes words fromthe Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and sizes them in relation to their
