(A) Accelerating Your Private Practice into the Fast Lane Presenter: Jenny Nordine, OTR/L, CDRS Learning Level: Beginner/Intermediate Abstract: Adaptive driving programs are more frequently becom-ing private practice programs out of necessity of a hospital clos-ing an existing program or a traffic educator specializing in adap-tive driving outside of a typical driver education setting. There are many steps and techniques to establishing a successful private practice but it can be done! This workshop will establish how to develop a private practice, market the practice and discuss ways to create efficient systems within this practice. What are the risks and rewards to owning a business and who will help you suc-ceed. We will make time to discuss current programs and transi-tioning to private practice.

(B) Exploring Potentials: Above and Beyond, New Strategies for Rehabilitative Driver Training

Presenter: Ronn Langford, Founder/President Master Drive Learning Level: Beginner/Intermediate Abstract: New technologies and strategies to explore newly de-fined potentials for many drivers with very specific and special needs including: TBI, CVA, ALS, teens with special needs (ADHD, Asperger’s, High Functioning Autism, etc.), and sea-soned drivers. Today’s Rehabilitative Driving Specialist needs to know more about the “art and skills” necessary in using the new technologies and systems in today’s cars. We will cover these systems and how their use can be effective coaching tools. A highlight of the program will be coverage of a unique joint re-search program in regard to the development of a new integrated system for quadriplegic drivers being conducted by Arrow Elec-tronics and MasterDrive Inc.; a development program of a totally new concept in rehabilitative driver development.

(C) Joysteer Certification Workshop** Presenter: Robert de Vos Burchart Learning Level: Advanced **maximum 8 participants: must have experience with high tech driving systems Abstract: Back by popular demand, this program seeks to in-crease evaluator’s knowledge and use of the joysteer high tech driving system in order that they may in turn evaluate and train their clients. Through the combination of lecture, hands on learn-ing and driving experiences, attendees of this program will learn the function, capabilities and use of the system. Presenters of will include an experienced CDRS and a professional knowledge-able about the system. Attendees successfully completing the workshop will receive a certificate indicating that they have mas-tered the skills necessary to evaluate their customers using a joysteer system.

(D) Beyond Duct Tape: What Every Evaluator Needs to Know Presenters: Anne Hegberg, MS, OTR/L, CDI, CDRS, Eva Richardville, OTR/L, CDRS Learning Level: Beginner/Intermediate Abstract: Driver rehabilitation specialists often need to think “outside the box” to meet the individual and unique needs of their clients. The presenters will provide a full spectrum of potential solutions whether you work for a center with abundant resources or must figure things out on a “shoe-string” budget. Beginning with positioning the client behind the wheel, either in a driver seat of wheelchair, the specialist’s skill is called upon to provide solu-tions for a wide variety of individual situations. Once the client is positioned, the task continues. The specialist considers if a piece of manufactured adaptive equipment will meet requirements or if further adaptation is necessary. Specialists must communicate what was functional in the evaluation vehicle to what can be done in their personal vehicle. Several products and prototypes will be viewed and discussed. Attendees can judge what will be most beneficial to include in their own “tool box”. Just as client’s vehi-cles are unique for their use, evaluation vehicles are unique and individual. Learn from other specialists what has and has not been successful in their vehicles over the years. Discussion among participants will be strongly encouraged.

Keynote Address: Exploding the Myths and Meeting the Challenges of (50,000,000 Licensed) Older Drivers Abstract: Older drivers are a heterogeneous group, yet they are often studied in the context of fitness to drive or driving cessation as being in a unique age demographic. This lecture will challenge many of the myths of driving in late life and address several aspects of mobility in regards to aging including; traffic safety risk, fitness to drive evaluations, driving retirement, and use of new technologies by older adults. The impact of an aging demographic on the driving mobility enhancement and assessment industry will be discussed.

Sunday 2:00-5:15 PM Conference Seminars run concurrently, 3 hours per session

1. Dementia and Driving: Current Evidence and Clinical Relevance Presenters: Peggy P. Barco, OTD, OTR/L, SCDCM, CDRS, Carol J. Wheatley, OTR/L, CDRS, Dr. David B. Carr, MD Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: This seminar will focus on the clinical importance of the current evidence and tools utilized when performing driving assessments with individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia. During this session an overview of the common types of dementia will be discussed – emphasizing the unique characteristics of each type and the corresponding implications to driving. This session will provide driving rehabilitation specialists (DRS) the knowledge and evidence to increase their under-standing and provide practice in evidenced-based tools when assessing individuals with cognitive decline for their fitness-to-drive. Choosing the clinical assessments to include in the clinical battery can be difficult as it has been shown that there is not one single test that can definitively predict driving performance. Examples to be discussed will consider single test approaches (e.g., Trail-making Test (Molnar, et al 2013), Useful Field of View (UFOVO (Ball, et al 1991)), combination of psychometric tests (Driving Health Inventory (DHI), Assessment of Driving Related Skills (ADRes), and multi-domain models (probability calculator (Carr et al, 2011), 4 C’s (O’Connor Et al, 2013) and DriveAble (Dobbs et al, 2013). While many assessments are available for use clinically, it is important that the DRS make evidence-based decisions in the selection, administration, and interpretation of the assessments. Exploration of the evidence behind the Probability Calculator will be discussed and case studies will be pre-sented to demonstrate both the strengths and limitations of this driving assessment process. The role of ‘caregivers” (via ques-tionnaires/interviews) will be discussed in terms of evidence and clinical relevance to the driving assessment process. Finally, driving recommendations for individuals with dementia will be explored related to passing, failing, or restricted driving and how these recommendations are made with consideration of both the clinical functioning of the individual, family support, and driving performance.

2. Product Demonstrations* Facilitator: Katy Greene, OTR/L, CDRS Learning Level: Beginner/Intermediate Abstract: This three (3) hour seminar is designed to provide information on different adaptive driving equipment available for individuals with disabilities, along with information on evaluation equipment. The presenters will be representatives from the manufacturers of these products. *Program will feature different vendors from the Saturday night program and will feature our Silver Level Sponsors.

Monday 1:45-5:00 PM Conference Seminars run concurrently, 3 hours per session 3. Behind the Wheel with ADHD Presenter: Ann Shanahan, Gayle Sweeney-Shanahan Sweeney Coaching Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: This presentation and material is geared toward driver education professionals and parents who have limited knowledge of ADHD/Autism. The program is designed to create awareness and educate these professionals and par-ents about the staggering statistics with regard to ADHD/Autism and traffic violations/accidents. The implications of medica-tions and driving and how some ADHD driving behaviors can mimic DUI will be discussed. Participants will learn how ADHD/Autism impacts driving skills . We will discuss peer pressure and role play potential social situation an ADHD teen might find themselves in with regard to driving. We will review the potential cost to the family with the increased accident/injury statistics. This presentation will involve discussion and audience participation in the role plays. 4. Medical Advisory Boards, Licensing Agencies and Driver Rehabilitation: Developing Connections Presenters: Anne E. Dickerson, PhD, OTR/L, SCDCM, FAOTA, Elin Schold Davis, OTR/L, CDRS Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: This session will involve presentation, discussion and breakout workgroups. NHTSA’s 5 year plan encourages the development of individual states’ medical advisory boards (MAB). Across the nation, communities are looking for the “right” services to address their concerns and mobility needs. The driving rehabilitation community must step up to be included in order to have a role in shaping the scope of the MAB’s influence, ensure that MAB members are aware of DR services and DR services are included in options for medically at risk driver. One focus of the AOTA Older Driver Initiative work is to build out-reach between generalist practitioners and the driving rehabilitation specialist. “Translational” tools (e.g., fact sheets, guidance document) can support this communication and reduce the burden of developing verbiage or taking time for the interaction either face-to-face or using electronic communication. Using the break out group to brainstorm topic of their choice, we will explore the components needs and expand our understanding of the difficulty of this networking expectation.

5. Digital Resources for the Driver Rehabilitation Specialist Presenter: Gayle J. San Marco, OTR/L, CDRS Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: Disabilities and functional declines due to medical conditions and aging interfere with driving and increase safety risks for individuals and the public. Driver Rehabilitation Specialists need to develop a comprehensive “toolkit”, including digital resources to competently assess clinical and functional driving relevant skills, and to assist our clientele to achieve their goals through carefully selected interventions. This course will focus on a variety of digital educational tools for the evaluator, assess-ment and screening tools that are available for assessment of driver rehabilitation clientele and computer and tablet based "brain training tools" for driving improvement. Also included will be a discussion of alternate transportation resources that are rapidly becoming more accessible via computer, smartphone and tablet. Finally, the course will explore resources that are available to support the aging driver and family members who are engaging in discussions of driving cessation and a transition from driver to passenger.

General Session: Ethics in Action– Presenter: Dianna Robertson, MCcOT, CDRS 8:00a– 9:00a 1 hour Beginner Abstract: The ADED Code of Ethics is a set of principles set forth to guide the professional conduct of driver rehabilitation specialists. Ethical practice is an integral, but sometimes nebulous, concept that driver rehabilitation professionals need to integrate into their daily practice. It is more than just knowing what is right and what is wrong, it is using prudent professional judgment to promote the best outcome for our clients. It is ADED’s position that any person involved in the delivery of driver rehabilitation services will conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner. DRS often experience a multitude of challenges related to determining the most ethical course of action in the provision of services. Often these matters are related to a client’s health, well-being, privacy issues, competency of the DRS, and the type of technologies used in the industry, or even compli-ance with guidelines or governing laws. The intent of this 1-hour general session is to guide the DRS in understanding the complexity of ethical concerns and the framework of principles that can be used as a guide for the DRS in making sound professional decisions when providing driver rehabilitation services. This will be accomplished by a brief overview of the set of principles identified in the ADED Code of Ethics, including discus-sion of various thought-provoking ethical scenarios and case studies.

Tuesday 9:15AM-12:30PM Conference Seminars run concurrently, 1.5 to 3 hours per session (see descriptions below) 6. Navigating the Legal Landscape- Dianna Robertson, MCcOT, CDRS 3 hours Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: The seminar will examine the types of legal issues that frequently arise for the CDRS in the course of their work with clients, funding agencies, and government organizations. Participants will participate in an entertaining "mock courtroom" trial of a CDRS as well as group exer-cises, which will highlight issues that can arise for professionals working in this field. 7. Distraction, Drowsiness, and Neurological Impairment: An Evidenced-based Approach to Driving Assessment and Intervention – Dr. Sherrilene Classen, PHD, MPH, OT REG. (ONT.),FAOTA Dr. Liliana Alvarez J., PhD, MSc, O.T. Sarah Krasniuk, R.Kin, MSc, HBK, PhD Student Melissa Knott, MSc(OT), OT. Reg. (Ont.), CWCE, CCLCP, PhD Student 3 hours Learning Level: Intermediate Abstract: The US National Safety Council has revealed that motor vehicle collisions (MVC) are rising at an alarming rate, making 2015 the dead-liest driving year since 2007. Drowsy driving, medically at-risk drivers, and distracted driving are among the top concerns of national and local gov-ernments and agencies. In this seminar, authors will provide an overview of current evidence pertaining to the impact of drowsy driving, neurological impairment, and distracted driving on the fitness to drive of individuals across the life-span. Based on three of their most current studies, authors will present: 1) the results of an evidence-based review on the determinants of fitness to drive in sleep deprived adults; 2) the findings of a study investi-gating the visual and cognitive predictors of fitness to drive in adults with Multiple Sclerosis; 3) the preliminary results of a study investigating the efficacy of an app-based intervention for visual scanning of critical roadway information on the simulated driving performance of teen novice drivers. From evidence-informed assessment to intervention, this seminar will focus on three of the most critical contributors to road traffic injuries: drowsy, medically at-risk, and distracted drivers. The findings presented will share best evidence for practicing driver rehabilitation specialists. 8. Technologies to Assist Learner Drivers on the Autism Spectrum—Johnell Brooks, PhD, Miriam Monahan, OTR, CDRS, CDI, Susan Pierce, OTR, CDRS, CDI 3 hours Learning Level: Beginner Abstract: This presentation will cover the practical application of current technologies to assist people on the Autism Spectrum in pursuit of driv-ing. The presenters will first provide background information about the cardinal traits of ASD and how these traits can impact learning to drive. The presenters will summarize the literature on existing technologies and their implications for helping individuals with ASD learn new skills. Two tech-nology programs that have been developed in-part to help individuals with ASD learn driving skills will be discussed: the Drive Fit app and the Drive-Safety driving simulator. Case studies will illustrate the implication of these technologies in the driving rehabilitation setting. 9-A. Driving Cessation: Let’s Talk About It! – Amy Brzuz, OTD, OTR/L, CDRS Time slot: 9:15-10:45 1.5 hours Learning Level: Beginner Abstract: However we view driving, there is no doubt it is the preferred method of community mobility for many individuals. What happens when changes associated with aging interfere with our ability to drive? For many individuals, driving cessation is a one-time event that is imposed upon them and the newly retired driver experiences anger, grief, depression, and doesn't always accept their new role as a non-driver. Many times, a DRS is involved in this "no driving" decision. Driving Rehabilitation Specialists can take a more positive, preventative approach to driving cessation. In this presentation, experiences will be shared with developing and hosting driving cessation groups for well-elderly drivers over the age of 65. Specific information about the group and results of a qualitative study will be discussed. CDRS and OT’S should feel comfortable breaching the topic of driving cessation with our clients. 9-B. A New Tool for Assessing Driver Behaviors at Intersections-Pierro Hirsch, PhD Time slot: 11:00a-12:30p 1.5 hours Learning Level: Beginner Abstract: Increasingly, driving simulators are being adopted as tools in driver assessment and driver rehabilitation. This mini-seminar describes new driving simulator tools for assessing and training the behaviors of drivers at intersections. Data will be presented from recent experiments.

THINKING ABOUT EARNING YOUR CERTIFICATION IN DRIVER REHABILITATION?

The term Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (DRS) signifies one who “plans, develops, coordinates and implements driver rehabilitation

services for individuals with disabilities.”

The purpose of the certification process is to protect the public by:

providing measurement of a standard of current knowledge desirable for individuals practicing driver rehabilitation;

encouraging individual growth and study, thereby promoting professionalism among driver rehabilitation specialists;

formally recognizing driver rehabilitation specialists who fulfill the requirement for certification.

About the Examination The CDRS™ Certification Examination is designed to test a well-defined body of knowledge representative of professional practice. The content of the examination has been defined by a national role-delineation study. The study involved surveying practitioners in the field of driver rehabilitation to identify tasks that are performed routinely and considered important to competent practice. The examination has been developed through a com-bined effort of qualified subject-matter experts and testing professionals who have constructed the examination in accordance with the CDRS™ Certification Examination content outline. The examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Each question consists of a stem with four re-sponse alternatives, with one of those being the correct response. Candi-dates will be permitted two (2) hours to complete the examination. Those who meet the eligibility requirements and achieve a passing score will be awarded a certificate indicating that they have achieved cre-dential status as a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS).

Eligibility requirements to sit for CDRS™ exam: (one criteria must be met) A. Four year undergraduate degree or higher in a health related field with an additional 1,664 hours of experience providing direct Driver Rehabilitation services.* B. Four year undergraduate de-gree*** or higher with a major or minor in Traffic Safety and/or a Driver and Traffic Safety Endorse-ment with an additional 3,328 hours of experience providing direct Driver Rehabilitation services.* C. The ADED Mentor Program provides

an opportunity for experienced members to meet newer conference attendees with a goal of welcoming, mentoring, and integrating them

into the association. The most immediate benefit for participation in the program is to establish a sense of belonging. ADED wants to help members in building an informal network within the organization that would include members from the various professional backgrounds, increasing membership longevity, and offering a way for more experienced members to “give back” to ADED. Be sure to sign up as either a mentor (experienced DRS/CDRS) or a mentee (new attendee or new member) when registering for conference! Enjoy these benefits of the Mentor Program: Mentors and mentees will be introduced on-line prior to arriving at the ADED conference. Mentors can offer the mentee with workshop and seminar selection. At conference, mentors may offer to accompany mentees to the Opening General Session, New Attendee Ori-

entation and escort them through the Exhibit Hall. The mentors may offer to maintain contact with the mentee throughout the year following conference. Mentors can help the mentee grow their professional network by introductions and referrals to other profes-

sionals in the industry. Mentors can earn up to 3 contact hours towards CDRS renewal.
