Write the Formula for the Reactants

Electrolysis of Water

• First, identify the symbols and oxidation numbers

Water is H2O

• This lab is different right? You only have ONE reactant and they show you the products in the video. What is our equation?

Write the Formula for the Reactants

Burning Magnesium

• First, identify the symbols and oxidation numbers

Magnesium is Mg2+

• This lab is different too! You only have ONE reactant. This forms a new substance at the end. What allowed the Mg to burn? What is our equation?

Page 26: 4.05 Chemical Reactions Virtual Laboratory. The Plan Review the different types of Chemical Reactions Complete the Virtual Lab via screen share/slides

Prediction

Mg + O2

What type of reaction might this be?

Why?

Could it be something else?

Writing our balanced equations

* Fe + CuSO4

Iron (III) is Fe3+

Copper (II) is Cu2+

Sulfate is SO42-

Iron and Copper will switch places

Cu + Fe2(SO4)3

Page 28: 4.05 Chemical Reactions Virtual Laboratory. The Plan Review the different types of Chemical Reactions Complete the Virtual Lab via screen share/slides

Balance this!

Cu + Fe2(SO4)3Fe + CuSO4

Is this balanced? What do we need to do to balance it?

What type of reaction is this?

Lead and Potassium will switch places

PbI2 + KNO3

Pb(NO3)2 + KI Lead (II) is Pb2+

Nitrate is NO31-

Potassium is K1+

Iodide is I1-

Page 30: 4.05 Chemical Reactions Virtual Laboratory. The Plan Review the different types of Chemical Reactions Complete the Virtual Lab via screen share/slides

Balance this!

Writing our Balanced Equations

Mg + O2

Magnesium is Mg2+

Oxygen is O2-

Not all combustion reactions involve organic compounds made of carbon and hydrogen, which means that the products are not always carbon dioxide and water. Other substances, both compounds and elements, can burn in oxygen. These reactions can often be categorized as synthesis reactions, but they are considered combustion reactions as well because a substance is reacting with oxygen and releasing energy.

Balance this!

Is this balanced? What do we need to do to balance it?

What type of reaction is this?

MgOMg + O2

Is there another choice?

Analysis

• #1~ We’ve written the balanced equations

• #2~ What does the law of conservation of mass state? Is this a closed container? Where did the gas go?

• #3~ Which reaction that we investigated can be more than one type?
